1960 Boys State Championship Track and Field Team: Team members included: Gary Conley, Lee Hazen, John LaDuke, Jerry Scott and Bob Woodard. The first team to win state championship in school history, the Vikings were led by high point man, Lee Hazens’s 26 points, including two state records in the 220 and 440. The 440 record is still unequaled 51 years later. Hazen was also third in the broad jump. John LaDuke was the state champion in the broad jump and Jerry Scott placed in both the high jump and the pole vault. Len Lutero: Coached the Viking Football team for 33 years to a record of 196-91-2 and a share of the state championship in 1981. During his 33 years as head coach, Lutero coached the Vikings to 16 league titles, including nine titles in 13 years between 1977 and 1989. Kevin Anderson: A standout in three sports (Football, Basketball and Track and Field) while at Siuslaw, Anderson went on to play three seasons of Pac-10 football with the Oregon Ducks. While in high school, he helped lead the Viking football team to the finals in 1974 and the basketball team to a third-place finish at the state tournament in 1975. Liz McCain: A Pioneer for female sports, McCain fought to start interscholastic athletics for girls at Siuslaw in 1964. She was named Sports Illustrated Coach of the Year and Who’s Who in Oregon Track and Field Coach of the Year. Her teams were dominant over her coaching tenure and her “Way Out Games” team from Siuslaw won a National physical fitness competition. McCain taught P.E. at Siuslaw from 1957-1986. Mary Jacobson: Four-time State Champion in the shot put and discus. Jacobeon is the current school record holder in the shot put pit and a former school record holder in the discus. Jacobson was ranked in the top five (5) in the United States in the shot put from 1970-1980. She twice finished third in the Olympic Trials. A three-time NCAA Runner-Up in the shot while at Kansas, where she also competed in field hockey and volleyball. Also held the national record in the shot put for the 14 and under age group. Bob Duncan: Set state record in scoring in basketball with 596 points in his senior season. Duncan was the first All-State basketball player in school history. He averaged over 27 points per game as a senior. Duncan was also a standout on the Viking baseball team. Curtis “Tooey” Emery: All-State football player for Siuslaw and a unanimous First Team All-League selection as a halfback. Emery played in the East-West Shrine game. He was also a state champion in the 220-yard dash in 1964 with a time of 23.1. Emery went to the Air Force Academy where he played on the football team and went on to become a Brigadier General in the Air Force before retiring in 1997. Lee Hazen: State Record holder in the 440 yard dash (48.8). Former state record holder in the 220 yard dash. Three-time state champion (twice in the 440 and once in the 220). High Point scorer at the 1960 State meet where he led his team to the state championship. His 440 time is one of the most outstanding performances in state history. Hazen was also a standout in football and basketball for the Vikings. Joe Hill: A three-sport star while at Siuslaw, Hill still holds school records in the 100 meter dash (10.7) the 200 meter dash (21.7) and the long jump (22-9 ½). High Point scorer at the 1979 State Track meet where he helped lead his team to the state championship. Hill was a football standout as both a running back and a wide receiver, and played football at the University of Oregon. Wes Hines: Won a National High School Championship in Greco-Roman wrestling and went on to place 5th in the World Junior Championships. Also won two wrestling state championships while at Siuslaw. Went on to wrestle at the University of Oregon where he was a two-time Pac-8 Wrestling Champion. Shannon (Gates) McClellan: Two-time State Javelin Champion. Set a State Meet Record (155-11) that held for twenty years. Two-time National Runner-up in the Javelin at Southern Oregon University (SOU), and a Conference Champion in the Heptathlon. Also a standout in Volleyball at SOU where she was the first female inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000. Mike Roe: Two-time State High Jump Champion and a member of the 1979 Boys State Championship Track & Field Team. Current School record holder in the High Jump and Triple Jump. Still holds the Oregon State 4A High Jump Record (6-10). Leading scorer and rebounder on Siuslaw’s first league championship basketball team, Roe played four years of Varsity basketball for the Vikings. Steve Savage: 1972 Olympian in the 3000 meter Steeplechase. Three-Time Division One All-American in Track & Field while at the University of Oregon and a member of the 1971 NCAA Championship Track & Field Team. Won the 1965 State Cross-Country Championship. Savage was the first South Coast resident to run inside four minutes for the mile. Kelli Stonelake: Holds two school records in Track & Field: 200 meters and 4x400 meter relay. Won three individual state championships in Track and Field. Helped lead the 1988 basketball team to a state title. Inducted into the Lane Community College Hall of Fame where she holds numerous records in both basketball and track and field.
