Washington Local Schools will hold its 27th Annual “Candlelight Walk for a Drug-Free Community” on
Monday, October 17, 2016 in the Whitmer Stadium, 6:30-8 p.m. (Gates open at 6:15 p.m.)
The Candlelight Walk is a special WLS tradition and kicks off the district’s year-long drug-prevention activities.
Every year, hundreds of Washington Local students, parents, staff, and community members gather together
to promote lives free from alcohol and other drugs.
Students in the Criminal Justice program will conduct a flag raising ceremony. The evening’s festivities include
performances by the Whitmer Cheerleaders and the Whitmer Marching Band, school banner displays, and
appearances by mascots Pete and Penelope.
A district essay contest was held which focused on Washington Local’s core values and staying drug-free.
Congratulations are extended to: Shianne Cole (Greenwood, 6th grade, Trust), Ayla Slovak (Hiawatha, 5th
grade, Honesty), Christopher Cassell (Jackman, 6th grade, Gratitude), Arianna Langford (McGregor, 5th grade,
Service), Donovan Welty (Meadowvale, 6th grade, Dignity), Brayden Lease (Monac, 5th grade, Respect), Ava

Bain, 12th grade, Courage), and Whitmer’s winners writing on Responsibility – Alayna Johnson (10th grade),
Savanna Miller (12th grade), and Averie Wynn (12th grade).
Students of all ages will recite a Drug-Free Pledge: “I promise myself, my family, and friends… that I will
remain free from alcohol and other drugs. I will be a person of good character, treat others with respect, and
be a support to those who are less fortunate than me.”
Parents will also be asked to make a pledge: “I promise to support my child’s efforts to remain free from
alcohol and other drugs. I will help my child develop pride in themselves, in our family, community, and
country. I will be a good example and talk to my child about the importance of respecting and caring for
others.”
A small gift will be presented to students as they enter the stadium. Students will also have the opportunity to
enter a free raffle contest. Students must be present to win. The district would like to extend thanks to the
