The Importance of Nursery Rhymes
Nursery rhymes have been a part of
our culture for over 500 years and
they play a significant role in your
child’s development.
Nursery rhymes are a perfect first
story for children as they are short and
have a catchy bouncing rhythm, which
sparks interest and garners children’s
attention.
Repetition of these sing-songy rhymes can
boost early language development.
In a preschool setting children can often
bond over a known nursery rhyme, the
shared knowledge builds a sense of
community among the class.
Children who have learned
nursery rhymes are better
readers and have a larger
vocabulary. Listening to
nursery rhymes strengthens a child’s ability
to hear the sounds in words, and can more
easily rhyme words themselves, which is an
early literacy skill. Nursery rhymes build
vocabulary which improves listening
comprehension, social conversation skills
and writing skills.
Nursery rhymes connect us to the past,
many rhymes tell a story and allow the
teacher/parent to discuss parts of
history to the child. Reading “Jack &
Jill” can lead to a discussion on life
before indoor plumbing. “Jack Jumped
Over the Candlestick” can lead to a
conversation on electricity. Nursery rhymes
can be a base for many science
experiments and further exploration of
history.
Nursery rhymes continue to play an
important role in development. While ECNS
incorporates nursery rhymes in our
classrooms routinely, we are planning to
elaborate on several well-known nursery
rhymes during our 2 week enrichment unit.
For more ideas regarding how to
incorporate nursery rhymes in your daily
family life, ask your child’s teacher.
