Belford Barley 3-Way Forage Mix Triticale Cayuse - Yakima Co-op

Belford Barley
Barley is a cool-season annual cereal
grain that can be used for grain
production, hay/forage, erosion
control, and as an inexpensive cover
crop. Belford Barley is tall variety
used primarily for hay and forage
either as a mono-culture planting or
in mixes. Belford Barley is awn-less
(beardless) which makes it more
palatable than awned varieties.
Seed at 100-120# per acre or 65# as
a nurse/cover crop.
Triticale
You can double crop your fields by
planting triticale in the fall or early
spring. A hay or silage crop can be
harvested in May, and the field
replanted with another crop, such as
silage corn.
3-Way Forage Mix
Cayuse Oats
The 3-way forage mix is a mix of
Magnum Oats, Magnum Peas and
Beardless Barley, usually Haybet. It
was developed to give maximum hay
production for the season. 3-way
forage mix works best under
irrigation. Under dry land conditions
the results could be very poor. The
3-way mix is a spring crop that
should be seeded at about 100# per
acre for maximum yield. The crop
itself should reach 30-45 inches tall
depending on the amount of water
being applied to the crop.
Cayuse Oats (Avena sativa): A cool
season annual cereal grain. Cayuse
Oats are used primarily for cover
crop, green chop, hay and forage
production. It is common to mix
them with legumes and other cereals.
Cayuse Oats are larger, mature later,
and have a larger stem than
Montezuma Oats. Cayuse Oats
should be planted in the spring.
Keep an eye on the barley and when
it reaches the soft dough stage it will
be time to cut. As with most crops
the more mature the crop gets the
less nutritious the crop will be.
Our Cayuse oats are certified weed
free.
- Plant at 100 to 120 lbs per acre on
irrigated ground and 75 to 80 lbs per
acre on non- irrigated ground.
