Elementary World Language Kindergarten Unit: Nuestras Celebraciones Spanish Language Overview: In this unit, students learn about Colombia in the context of a visit to the city of Cartagena and to a birthday celebration that takes place at a friend’s home there. Students will be able to say how old they will be on their birthday and to talk about birthday celebrations. They will also talk about the food and the beverages that children usually have at birthday parties. Students will talk about and compare the music, dances, and games that are common at birthday parties both in Colombia and in the United States. Finally, students will talk about birthday presents and ways to thank friends for their presents. Essential Questions: ● What do you tell a friend on his or her birthday? (Week 1) ● What do you eat and drink at a birthday party? (Week 2) ● What do children do at a birthday party? (Week 3) ● What presents did you get for your birthday? (Week 4) Enduring Understandings: ● Colombia is not far from Panamá. (From preceding unit) ● Colombia’s three main cultures are intermixed. ● Each of the three main cultures of Colombia have their own music, food and traditions. ● Colombia’s birthday celebrations have traditions that are similar to traditions in the United States.
