Korea University attended the Universitas 21 (U21) Annual
General Meeting (AGM) from May 14 to 16, 2014. Over 70
delegates from all 27 of U21’s member universities
attended the annual meeting, hosted this year by the
University of Glasgow. Korea University is the only U21
member from the Republic of Korea. During the three-day
event, Korea University President, Byoung-Chul Kim met
with several other university leaders and senior
administrators including Professor Anton Muscatelli,
Principal and Vice Chancellor at the University of Glasgow;
Professor Andrew Deeks, President of University College
Dublin; Professor Ignacio Sanchez, President of Pontifica
Universidad Catolica da Chile (host university for the 2015
AGM) and many others. Topics discussed during the event
included current activities from within the U21 network, as
well as activities for the future, including an innovative
Global Classroom Initiative from the University of Maryland.
Also discussed were the U21 Rankings of National Higher
Education Systems and a review of U21’s strategy and
governance. During the discussion of future U21 activities,
Korea University proposed more graduate-level student
mobility opportunities between U21 members for masters
and PhD students. The meeting concluded on Friday May
16, 2014 with a presentation on academic workforce
planning by Mr. Peter Reilly from the Institute of Employment
Studies in the UK. To learn more about U21 and its

New European Union (EU) Centre at Korea University
Korea University (KU)’s new EU Centre was opened in
conjunction with the Korea Institute for International
Economic Policy (KIEP) and the Seoul Broadcasting
System (SBS) and with financial support from the
Commission of the European Communities. The KU-KIEPSBS EU Centre plans to establish itself as the focal point of
EU-related academic programs, exchanges and research,
and outreach and network activities. Starting from the 2014
spring semester, the Centre offers EU-related courses for
bachelor, master and PhD students, and provides financial
assistance to students pursuing EU studies at Korea
University. A number of inter nship and field-trip
opportunities will be provided as well. The Centre will also
convene academic conferences, seminars and workshops
on EU-related topics, and support SBS-TV documentaries
on Europe. Through these various activities, the KU-KIEPSBS EU Centre will contribute to a better understanding of
contemporary EU affairs and enhance bilateral relations
between the Korea and the EU. Korea University’s
Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) houses the
2
Proactive KU
Centre, which will serve as a hub for EU-related education,
research, and promotion within Korea, effectively
combining the core competencies of the three consortium
institutions. Through all these activities, Korea University
expects to raise its international profile significantly, as the
Center will be frequently visited by the leaders of the EU
and the 28 member countries. The Centre is also expected
to promote exchange with prominent European universities.

Ongoing construction and restoration work
at Korea University
Korea University has continued to strengthen its stateof-the-art infrastructure with the recent completion of
several new building projects, bringing to over 20 the
number of new building openings in the past decade!
One building of note is the new Korea University
Business School Hyundai Motor Hall.
Completed towards the end of 2013 and at a cost of
over $40 million, the Hall was funded 100% by
donations from Business School alumni, faculty, and
c u r re n t s t u d e n t s . A f t e r n e a r l y t h re e y e a r s o f
construction, the Hall was officially opened in
September 2013 and named by its largest patron,
Hyundai Motor Vice Chairman, Chung Eui Sun, who
was a member of the Business School class of 1989.
In addition, Korea University’s Main Building underwent
its first restoration work in 80 years.
Completed in 1934, the Main Building is Korea
University’s oldest building, and has even survived live
ammunitions fire during the Korean War (1950-53).
The restoration work was carried out in six stages and
involved replacing old wood, repairing old windows,
coating walls, and strengthening the roof with natural
slate. In recognition of the building’s historical and
cultural value, the repair work was funded by Korea’s
Cultural Heritage Administration and the Seoul
Metropolitan City Government.
The restoration work began in May 2013 and was
completed on April 15, 2014, just in time for Korea
University’s 109th anniversary on May 5, 2014.
Looking toward the future, Korea University’s next major
building project is a new home for the University’s
College of Health Science. Currently, the College is
located approximately five kilometers from the Anam
campus, but its new home will be a brand-new 31,000
square-meter building on Korea University’s Science &
Engineering Campus. This grand facility is expected to
be completed in early March 2015. Watch this space!

International Summer Campus (ISC) continues to grow
Innovative new agreements in Mexico and Sri Lanka
Since beginning its internationalization efforts in earnest
in 2003, Korea University has executed agreements with
close to 900 institutions and organizations in over 90
countries around the world.
Of the many new agreements signed by Korea
University and its partners in 2014, two stand out for
their originality and creativity: Monterrey Institute of
Technology and Higher Education, Mexico and the
University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
In its agreement with the Monterrey Institute of
Technology and Higher Education (ITESM), Korea
University will be the only university in Korea to receive
honors students from the Mexican university. ITESM will
send its honors students to eight other universities
around the world, including such renowned institutions
as the University of Cambridge, Cornell University, and
Yale University. Korea University is proud to be part of
ITESM’s honors program and to be associated with
such world-class universities. Both Korea University and
4 Proactive KU
ITESM are proud members of both the Association of
Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and Universitas 21
(U21).
The agreement between Korea University and Colombo
University (CU) allows KU to fulfill is academic social
responsibility. Through the agreement, semester- or
year-long exchange students from CU will receive an
airfare allowance and a monthly living stipend to study
at KU. In addition, the agreement also allows the same
benefits to CU students who wish to enroll in Korea
University’s International Summer Campus (ISC). This
agreement follows in the footsteps of a similar 2013
agreement with the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
2014 marked the best year yet for Korea University’s
renowned International Summer Campus (ISC).
More than 1,600 students took part in this year’s running
of the six-week program, the most in the program’s
11-year history. In addition to the increased number of
students, more and more countries are taking part in the
program. This year saw students from more than 20
different countries and more than 200 institutions
participate in the program from June 30 to August 7.
The ISC offers more than 120 courses that are delivered
entirely in English by some 60 distinguished faculty from
prestigious universities including Stanford University, Yale
University, the University of Cambridge, Cor nell
University, the University of Pennsylvania, the Johns
Hopkins University, and UC Berkeley, among many
Most Global Korea
Scholarship (GKS)
students of any
university in Korea
As the top-rated university for internationalization in
Korea, it is perhaps no surprise that Korea University
has more Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) students than
any other university in the country. The Global Korea
Scholarship is supported by the government of Korea
and implemented by the National Institute for
International Education (NIIED) under the auspices of
the Ministry of Education.
In June 2014, three of the eight international students at
KU who received GKS scholarships for the 2014 spring
semester attended a presentation ceremony at the
Office of International Affairs.
Ms. Iwade Tamako (second from left) from Japan; Ms.
Zhang Jia Mian (middle) from China; and Ms. Taniqua
Kristina Adderley (second from right) from the Bahamas
joined Mr. Dong-Hoon Park (far right), incoming student
advisor, and Ms. June Juyeon Ha, manager of the
others.
Korea University launched its International Summer
Campus in 2004, in celebration of KU’s 100th anniversary.
Since then, the ISC has grown to be one of the largest
and most renowned programs of its type in Asia.
To learn more about the ISC, visit: http://isc.korea.ac.kr
International One-Stop Service Center (far left) in the JC
Kim Lounge on the third floor of the Dongwon Global
Leadership Hall.
During the ceremony, Mr. Park presented the students
with an official certificate from the president of the
NIIED, Ambassador Byung Hyun Lee, while Ms. Ha
enjoyed hearing the students recount tales of their time
at KU.
As outlined on its website, the GKS was established to
generate deeper mutual understanding between
countries by facilitating educational exchange in human
resource mobility. To learn more about this and other

Seven Korea University students participate in the
2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi
Kyou Hyuk Lee
Business Administration class of 1997
As one of just a few universities in Seoul with its own ice
rink, perhaps it is of little surprise that Korea University
would be so well represented at the 2014 Winter Olympics
in Sochi.
On March 6, 2014, Korea University President, ByoungChul Kim awarded certificates of appreciation to the seven
Korea University student athletes for their tireless
dedication and sportsmanship. During the presentation,
President Kim said, “I would like to show my appreciation
and respect for all the sacrifices you have made. I hope
that your experiences at the Olympic Games will inspire
you to continue to strive toward even bigger dreams and
goals.”
In total, seven Korea University students participated in
the Sochi games, with three of them earning medals in
their respective sports.
Speed skater, Sang-hwa Lee (Graduate School of Education
class of 2011*) won the gold medal in the women’s 500
meters speed skating competition. Ms. Lee, who is often
referred to as Korea’s speed skating empress, also won gold

Short track speed skater, Hae-ri Cho (Physical Education
class of 2005) won the gold medal in the women’s 3,000
meter relay. This was Ms. Cho’s fourth Olympic appearance
and she persevered many injuries, judging scandals, and
disqualifications along the way.
Figure skater, Yuna Kim (Physical Education class of
2009) won the silver medal in ladies’ single skating. Ms.
Kim also won the gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics
in Vancouver, Canada and is the sports winningest

competition during her entire professional career.
Alpine skier, Sung Hyun Kyung (Physical Education class
of 2009) underwent surgery in 2013 and so his performance
in Sochi was hampered. However, Kyung is expected to
excel at the 2018 Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.
Short track speed skater Yun-Jae Kim (Physical
Education class of 2009) missed out on a medal at the
Sochi Olympics, but gained experience on the world
stage, while competing against the world’s best.
Alpine snowboarder, Bong-shik Shin (Sports and Leisure
Studies class of 2012) was the first Korean to enter an
Olympic snowboarding event. Although he failed to pass
the preliminary rounds, he has become a stronger athlete
thanks to his Olympic experience.
Speed skater, Kyou Hyuk Lee (Business Administration
class of 1997) made his final appearance for Team Korea
at the 2014 Sochi games. Lee is a living legend in Korea,
having joined the national team at age 13 and having
competed on the world stage for some 23 years.

Condoleezza Rice, 66th United States Secretary of
State, speaks at Korea University
Korea University and its Ilmin International Relations
Institute welcomed Condoleezza Rice, 66th United
States Secretary of State, for her special lecture at the
Global Conference Hall on April 30, 2014.
Showing that her popularity remains even after having
left office, more than 500 students, faculty, and staff
turned out to hear Rice speak. In fact, the seating in
the Hall was insufficient to accommodate everyone;
but ever the diplomat, Rice invited students to sit on
the stage with her.
During her hour-long speech, Rice outlined the role of
the US in Korean unification and presented her
diagnosis of the current situations on the Korean
peninsula and in Northeast Asia.
The day before, Rice visited Poongsan high school to
deliver a speech to the students there. Interestingly,
Poongsan high school has a long history of hosting
members of the Republican Party. Former US
President George H.W. Bush spoke there in 2005, as
did his son, former President George W. Bush, and the
junior Bush’s brother, Jeb.
Before giving her speech on Korean unification, Rice

met with Korea University President, Byoung-Chul
Kim, where the two discussed the strong connection
between the United States and Korea and the strong
connection between Korea University and Stanford
University, where Rice had her first fellowship and
where she later served as a professor of political
science.
Carleton S. Fiorina, former chief executive officer at
Hewlett-Packard, speaks at Korea University
The Korea University Business School hosted a
special lecture by top female CEO Carleton S. Fiorina,
on May 30, 2014 at the majestic Inchon Memorial Hall.
Fiorina’s talk was titled, “The age of womenomics and
the conditions for becoming a successful leader.”
During her talk, Fiorina told the audience that leaders
are not born, but made and that leadership often
starts in unexpected situations. Talking about her
childhood, Fiorina recounted how she always felt
talentless, despite her mother’s efforts to assure her
that she was indeed “a gift from God.”
Fiorina majored in medieval history and philosophy in
college and then later entered law school at her
parents’ request. However, she quit law school in the
first semester, saying that she realized that if people
do not do what they want, they cannot lead a
successful life.
After leaving law school, the CEO-in-waiting worked
as a secretary, taught English in Italy, and entered an
MBA program. Eventually, she landed an entry-level
position at AT&T, where, according to her, she
encountered many difficulties because of her sex. To
o v e rc o m e th ese , she c onvinc e d he rsel f th at
successful people can identify their own talents and
then can be brave enough to act on them, regardless
of potential failure.
Fiorina told the audience:
The essence of leadership is to create a positive change
and to present a better way to make a difference.
Leaders should be followed by people. If you are afraid
of change, you cannot be a leader. Generally, people
are afraid of change, and tend to stay where they are.
Leaders should be able to unlock others’ potential.

Korea University is the first university in Korea to
join the World 100 Reputation Network
The World 100 Reputation Network, the group dedicated to
reputation management and communications research for
elite universities, are delighted to welcome their first
research member from South Korea, with the enrolment of
Korea University. Established in 1905, Korea University is a
broad-based university with 24 colleges and divisions, and
24 graduate schools. Its flagships subjects include history,
law, economics and journalism, offering a rich humanities
specialization compared to some of the more technically
driven universities in Asia.
Korea University was ranked 145th in the world by QS
World University Rankings 2013 and 18th in Asia in the QS
University Rankings Asia 2014. Also, in the 2014 QS World
University Subject Rankings, the university's politics,
economics, chemical engineering and communications
programs were all ranked within the top 50 in the world,
with 13 other subjects ranked in the world top 100.
Louise Simpson, Director of The World 100 Reputation
Network, welcomed their first Korean research member:
Following from our network study tour to Korea this spring,
we were delighted to meet and learn about Korea University’s
excellence, and extremely pleased that they were interested in
10
Proactive KU
our membership group and research into world class
university reputation. Korea University is clearly making
great progress on the world stage, and is one of the best
universities in Asia. From a reputational point of view, the
Koreans are working hard to welcome international students
and faculty, and they are serious about creating a top
learning environment. However, they also know that how they
communicate and manage their reputation is critical, and
their work around international engagement, and
amplification is impressive.
Prof. Sung Jin Kang, Vice President for International Affairs
commented:
We are very pleased to be part of the World 100 Network, in
order to advance our own understanding of communications
for world class education, but also to ensure that the Asian
perspective is included in reputational research and the global
dialogue. To that end, we are delighted to be participating in
the next World 100 conference, and discussing the differences
between East and West brand management and reputational
amplification!

Seventeen Korea University subjects ranked
within the world top 100
Korea University was ranked in the world top 100 in 17
subjects out of a total of 30 areas assessed by
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)’s 2014 QS World University

Systems) over 2013 and is fully double Korea
University’s 2012 record. Of the 17 subjects in the top 100, four were ranked in
the top 50:
Communication & Media Studies (25th)
Politics & International Studies (42nd)
Economics & Econometrics (49th)
Chemical Engineering (50th)
In addition to being ranked 25th in the world, Korea
University’s Communication & Media Studies was
ranked number one in Korea.

Civil & Structural Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Agricultural & Forestry

Of note is that the overall results demonstrated a
balance between the natural and social sciences, with
eight and nine subjects from each area recognized,
respectively. This kind of balance between the arts and
sciences is rare among universities in Korea.
33-place jump for Korea University
in World University Rankings
Korea University was ranked number 206 in the world
in the 2013-14 Times Higher Education (THE) World

such increase among domestic universities in Korea.
THE assesses universities according to thirteen
indicators in five areas such as education, globalization,
research, citations per paper, and industry research
revenue.
Korea University excelled in all areas, but in particular,
was the only university in Korea to see its score in
education increase.
In addition, KU received the highest internationalization
score of any university in Korea.

Six new Korea-related publications
from Korea University Press
In 2013 and 2014, Korea University Press published six different volumes totaling close to 3,800 pages of content
dealing with Korean language and culture.
These books came as part of the Korean Language Education and Research Center Research Institute of Language
and Information (KLEAR-RILI) Studies in Korean Language and Linguistics series.
▶Essentials of Korean Culture (hard cover 584p.) was first published in 2013 in Korean. As of the time of
this writing, the English version is expected to be published in September 2014. This book will provide students with
a systematic knowledge of the fundamental aspects of Korean studies.
▶The Korean Language (hard cover 604p.) offers a comprehensive introduction to the linguistics of Korean
through essential facts about the language. The book provides a wealth of examples and user-friendly descriptions
that do not presuppose advanced knowledge of either linguistic theory or Korean on the part of the reader.
▶Korean (hard cover 604p.) is a descriptive grammar book for language teachers, students, and scholars of
Korean linguistics. The book will be useful to Korean linguists of any theoretical orientation, while remaining
extremely accessible to students studying the language beyond the elementary level.
▶Topics in Korean Language and Linguistics (hard cover 792p.) is an anthology of selected papers on
Korean language and linguistics by Professor Ho-min Sohn that were written for academic conferences, journals, and/or chapters in edited books during
the past twenty odd years.
▶Studies in Korean Linguistics and Language Pedagogy (hard cover 616p.) commemorates Professor Ho-min Sohn’s achievements in
Korean linguistics and language pedagogy over the past 42 years. The book is a collaborative effort between Prof. Sohn’s close colleagues and former
students and honors his lifelong contribution to promoting Korean linguistics and Korean as a foreign language worldwide.
▶Linguistic Expeditions (hard cover 552p.) is a unique and intriguing collection of papers initially published in 1986 that brings together 25 articles
representing the scholarly activity of Prof. Ho-min Sohn from the early 1970s to the mid 1980s. A remarkable feature of Sohn’s scholarship during this
period is its striking breadth. Topics covered include the design of writing systems, comparative-historical linguistics, syntax, semantics, pragmatics,
sociolinguistics, and language pedagogy.
