Progressive Era Study Guide
There were many negative effects caused by industrialization:
• Child labor
• Low wages and long hours
• Unsafe conditions
To fight against industrialization problems, people started to:
• Form unions to unite together for better conditions and wages and shorter hours
o An example of a union is the American Federation of Labor (AFL) founded
by Samuel Gompers
• Unions often went on strike in order to fight for their demands
o The Homestead Strike at Carnegie’s steel plant in Pittsburgh ended in
violence, which turned many people away from joining unions
• During the Progressive Era, there were several workplace reforms (changes)
o Improved safety conditions
o Reduced (shorter) working hours
o Child labor was made illegal
Women fought for the right to vote for many years.
• Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were 2 women fighting for
women’s suffrage
• The 19th amendment to the Constitution granted women the right to vote

Discrimination was common in the United States, and it was an issue many
Progressive Era reformers hoped to change. 2 Civil Rights leaders attempted to help
African Americans gain equal rights.
• Booker T. Washington believed the key to equality was through vocational
education. He started the Tuskegee Institute, where African Americans learned
skills such as farming, carpentry, cabinetmaking, etc.
• W.E.B. DuBois fought for the political (voting), civil (equal), and social (no
segregation) rights of African Americans. He founded an organization called the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), to help
fight for these rights. It is still an organization today.

Many people believed alcohol caused many problems within society.
• Many groups opposed making and consuming (drinking) alcohol – they were
members of the Temperance Movement
• The 18th amendment to the Constitution banned alcohol from being produced,
transported and sold
