Across the generations, you can count on Sylvania Community Services. 2013 Annual Report A message from the Executive Director One of the hallmarks of SCS is that we are not content to rest on our laurels, but are continuously working to do even better. The year 2013 was a year full of energy and enthusiasm as we delivered programs full of creativity and focused on increasing the mental agility of both our seniors and our children. Our Senior Center expanded our Silver Scholars programming, providing opportunities for multisensory stimulation in exploring the diversity of other geographic locations and cultures. Our “Go Green” campaign, launched in February 2013, was championed by both staff and senior center participants throughout the year. The Center also received a partial “makeover” as we did some refurbishing of carpet and paint. We are indeed fortunate to have such a wonderful building so well suited to providing a wide variety of program offerings to our seniors. Our Child Care staff was kept busy this year, building a love of learning in our preschoolers as they helped prepare them for kindergarten. While focusing on school preparedness, they also were busy preparing for state inspections, Step Up to Quality inspections, and “star” renewals which is how the State of Ohio recognizes the excellence of our programs. I’m happy to say that all our extended care sites’ stars were renewed and Woodrow Preschool moved up to three stars! Woodrow began using the “Handwriting Without Tears” curriculum this year, an example of why they are rated so highly. We were thrilled when the Sylvania Chamber of Commerce honored SCS as the Spotlight Business for May. It’s always gratifying to know that we have such strong support throughout the community for the services we provide to seniors and to children. Finally, we formally established our strategic fundraising program when we hired Sarah Metzger, Development and Communications Manager. We’ve worked hard to be good stewards of the funds entrusted to us to operate the Senior Center and Sylvania Child Care. Raising private funds will help us to ensure that we can continue to provide the kinds of excellent programming and care that Sylvania-area residents expect and desire. In all that we do for our seniors and our children, we strive to live out our core values of service, safety, quality, accountability and collaboration. Thank you, Sylvania, for allowing us to serve you for our 37th year! 2 2013 Board of Directors Erika Rizzo, Board President Fifth Third Bank Maureen Stevens, Board Vice President Mobile Meals of Toledo Arleen Hatcher, Board Secretary Sylvan Elementary School John Plock, Board Treasurer Retired Finance Director, City of Sylvania Baron Black ACT Systems Ltd. Brain Fitness Our brains are marvelous organs, able to process multitudes of information so fast that we’re often not aware of how much information we’re absorbing at any given moment in time. The human brain grows most rapidly in size from birth to age 5, although brain development continues throughout childhood and ongoing learning as an adult can help parts of your brain grow larger as well as smarter. Our Sylvania Child Care preschool students are exposed to a variety of educational tools and creative curricula to help prepare them for a smooth entry to kindergarten. One very popular and effective tool introduced this year is “Handwriting Without Tears.” This award-winning, child-friendly curriculum introduces Pre-K students to the same curriculum they will be using when they enter Kindergarten at Sylvania Schools. It is hands-on, featuring a multi-sensory approach that addresses different learning styles and invites active participation. Studies have shown that activities that promote mental agility and “brain fitness” in older adults are particularly important in helping to combat the normal memory loss Preschool children practicing the fundamentals of handwriting without tears. Our I-Pad class for seniors helps them embrace new technologies. that comes with aging. Many of the older adults that we serve at the Sylvania Senior Center are life-long learners and come to the Center for the stimulating activities and programs we provide. Our “Silver Scholars” programming provides life-long learning opportunities for knowledge and well-being. Study groups included Spanish and French for Travelers, Local History, Music Appreciation, and Cinema Studies. Our Tuesday night series provided opportunities for seniors to have dinner and learn from expert speakers more about health and fitness, music appreciation, and diverse cultures and geographic places, among other topics. Speaker at Silver Scholars program talks about life in Tanzania. 3 Sylvania Senior Center 7140 Sylvania Ave. • Sylvania Ohio 43560 • www.sylvaniaseniorcenter.org • 419.885.3913 Mission: To enhance the quality of life for senior citizens in the Sylvania Community. The Sylvania Senior Center strives to enhance seniors’ daily lives, providing engaging programs and essential services that have a direct, immediate and positive impact. We give seniors every opportunity to keep their minds and bodies strong and healthy. This enables seniors to maintain independence and to contribute to their families and their communities for as long as possible. Thanks to a deep and abiding partnership with the City of Sylvania and Sylvania Township, we have a first-rate facility that provides seniors with a wide range of options no matter what their specific interests may be. The Senior Center is nationally accredited and locally committed. In 2013, this meant that: • We served 2,793 seniors with an average of 250 seniors participating daily. • Participants enjoyed 5,749 meals together in our dining room. • 842 Medical Screenings were performed. • 3,218 One-way trips were provided for essential errands such as grocery shopping, pharmacy, banking, and others. • 458 seniors attended lectures on timely topics such as the Homestead Exemption, the Affordable Care Act, and Medicare, as well as many culturally focused programs. Mission Moments The Senior Center provides something for just about everyone. “You can’t believe how much enjoyment we get from the pool room. It’s reminiscent of our youth, going to the school playground during recess. Some of us played in our younger days, then gave it up for many years as we got busy working and raising our families. Then when we retired, we looked for things to do that we enjoyed in the past.” Carlton Surtman “It is so much fun. I just enjoy the companionship. There’s always some good laughs too. This has brought so muchjoy into my life since I found it a year ago.” Ruth Herrick Ritchie 4 Welcome to Medicare Presentation facilitated by Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program held in the SSC Great Room. Sylvania Senior Center 1,044 seniors participated in health/wellness education programs The Center provides open gym hours and exercise classes including body recall, jazzercise, restorative yoga and more that help seniors to maintain and enhance flexibility, range of motion, strength and balance. Seniors also have regular access to pharmacists and other medical health professionals. Educational programming and discussion groups on a variety of health topics also keeps seniors informed and lets them take charge of their health needs. Participation in physical fitness activities and educational programming helps seniors improve not just their physical fitness but also their “brain fitness” or mental agility. 211 volunteers accumulated 38,443 volunteer hours Volunteerism is alive and well at the Senior Center! Many seniors give of their time and talents to benefit the Senior Center as well as the community. Studies have shown that becoming a volunteer benefits seniors’ bodies and minds while they are in turn benefiting others. Many seniors have life skills that are utilized in our volunteer program. Student volunteers, including National Honor Society members from Sylvania Southview High School, also give of their time and talents. In November 2013, one of our own, Haynes Lee, was recognized for his outstanding Sylvania Senior Center volunteerism by the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at their Philanthropy Day luncheon in November. 5 Sylvania Child Care 4747 N. For over 25 years, Sylvania Child Care has provided year-round care in a safe, secure learning environment for children of preschool age (3-5 yrs.) and before/ after school care for school aged children (grades K-6). Our staff works hard to meet standards of excellence established by the State of Ohio, while providing every child with a warm welcome each day. Parents have come to rely on the peace of mind they receive knowing that their children are well cared for in a safe and fun learning environment. Mission Moments “We are so lucky to have you in our lives. I truly believe you are why our daughter loves school so much.” (Northview parent, speaking about Ashlea, Child Care lead teacher.) “Got the biggest hug today, didn’t expect it. I love my kids at work!” (Child Care Staff member) 497 children in extended time (before and after school care) Our extended time staff employs creativity in working with students, teachers and parents to support learning in the schools. The Highland Elementary staff give students “riddles of the day” and math problems that challenge the children to investigate and find answers on their own. Students at all locations have the opportunity to do their homework under staff supervision. Physical activity helps energize students and gets them ready to focus on school. Mission Moments ”We love the program; it is so convenient for our family.” (Highland Parent) “Mom, please come back later. I am not ready to leave yet.” (Maplewood Child) 6 Sylvania Child Care 82 preschool students enrolled. School preparedness is key to early success in kindergarten. Children in the Woodrow and Northview Preschools are using the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum, helping them to become better prepared for kindergarten. At the Northview preschool program, not only do children benefit from working with highly trained staff, they also provide an opportunity for high school students to gain valuable hands-on experience in an early childhood education career. 20 children from 15 families received $6,659 in scholarship and financial assistance. Northview preschool students enjoy reading along during circle time. 41% had siblings in the program Mission Moments “Our older child attended Sylvania Child Care when it was at the Burnham Building. Then, when our son needed before and after school care, we knew Sylvania Child Care was right for us. He’s been very happy at Central Trail, where the staff are very nurturing and caring.” (Central Trail parent) 186 children attended summer camp Sensory play helps children explore and learn about their world. Programs are funded through a combination of program fees, grants, private donations, and the Sylvania Community Services Foundation. In addition, the Senior Center receives funds from the Sylvania Senior Levy. However, over the past several years, grant support and levy funding has declined, while the need for services remains. Gifts from our supporters enable us to: •Maintain and increase programs that support the health, well-being, and independence of senior citizens •Provide scholarship funds to ensure all children have the same opportunity for quality care and teaching as their classmates •Provide enriched programming, full of creative, multisensory curricula that promotes mental agility in seniors and school preparedness in children The Sylvania Community Services Foundation is a support organization to help meet the growing needs of the Sylvania Senior Center and Sylvania Child Care and accepts donations on their behalf. Raising additional funds will ensure the continuation and growth of quality, creative programs for seniors and children.
