We’ve been heading there all along, but our Bicentennial year has given us a wonderful chance to celebrate the journey we’ve been on since 1816. I have been so grateful for, and we’re all indebted to, the members of the various committees, task forces, and work teams who have coordinated our efforts along the way. 2016 will be a year to remember, and everyone who helped us worship, or who lifted our hearts with music, or who fed us so well, or who attended to all the details that would have otherwise gone unnoticed are deserving of our gratitude. But now we turn our attention to the future that God has in store for us. Our preacher on Sunday, Larry Lyon, gave us a gentle nudge to resist the temptations of complacency and familiarity, and to step out in faith, for the benefit of future generations of Presbyterians. I hope we’ll find ways to take his encouragement to heart, remembering that we don’t exist for our own benefit. Instead, we exist for the glory of God, and for those beyond our walls, and even for those beyond our moment in time. Finally, I promised Bonnie Hoots that I’d express her deep thanks for your acts of kindness and generosity as she moves into retirement after 36 years on the FPC staff. Bonnie has loved being a part of the ministry of FPC and is grateful for your 4 Donate Your Gently Used Bibles & Christian Books Pastor on Call 4 “When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes.” Desiderius Erasmus FPC Shares 4 Church Register 4 This Week at FPC If you’ve collected decades of Christian books that helped you grow in your faith, why not share them with others? By donating your books to Christian Library International, you will bless many seekers, new Christians, and mature believers in prison. These books will be passed from cell to cell and potentially inspire hundreds. Just drop them off with the FPC Shares donations and we will get them all to CLI. warm remembrances. As you can image, this is quite a transition around here, and I am grateful that Bonnie is easing into retirement by coming into the church office for a few hours each week, helping Allison Lee learn the complexities of the financial secretary position. Bonnie has shown great devotion to this church for many years, so this last expression of faithfulness comes as no surprise. Organized by the youth, the goal of this luncheon is to raise awareness & funds for those who might not have a bowl of soup (or anything else) to eat on this and many other days. The youth will be offering a Moment for Mission at both services & taking up a special offering in soup pots following both services. There’s no cost for the lunch of soup & wings prepared by Mitch Crisp, but donations will be collected to offset the cost of the meal. Offerings will go to ease hunger in the heart of Raleigh. See you there! Mission Moment - Transitions LifeCare Transitions LifeCare, formally Hospice of Wake County, was founded in 1979 and provides health care and support services to seriously and terminally ill patients. Transitions LifeCare has grown to provide not only hospice care, but also home health, pediatric care, respite services, grief counseling, and community education programs. Transitions LifeCare has five primary programs: hospice care, palliative care, home health, caregiver support and grief counseling. The funding provided by FPC will support the grief counseling program; specifically the program for children. The children’s program at the Grief Center includes individual and group counseling programs, music and art therapy, and Camp Reflections. These programs are designed to help children work through their grief, to learn healthy ways to cope with loss, to connect with others experiencing loss, and to find joy in life again. All programs and activities are provided at no charge, with community donations and grants covering program costs each year. As the Transitions Grief Center is the only free, nonprofit grief counseling program in Wake County, the majority of the children and families served are low-income and uninsured that are referred through Wake County Schools. FPC members can support Transitions LifeCare through volunteering their time preparing food for evening support groups, donating art supplies to the children’s art therapy program, and volunteering at the summer camp.
