Bemidji Area Schools Facilities Study Bemidji Area Schools, with help from the Neilson Foundation, are conducting a comprehensive facility study this spring with a focus on indoor and outdoor recreational facilities. The first phase is near completion and involved listening sessions at each school and several additional sessions for the general public and community leaders. Students, staff members, parents, and community members were asked to identify current and future facility strengths and needs. Providing adequate elementary classroom space emerged as the top priority from nearly all respondents. With adequate classroom space, Bemidji Area Schools could better address the desire to reduce class sizes at the elementary levels. Creating indoor multipurpose space for physical education/recreation received many favorable comments and support as participants envisioned the needs of our school and community for future decades. The second phase of the study will involve visiting each school site and recreational facility to review utilization, access, and condition. Facility experts from Northern Minnesota Solutions Group will spend several days in the school district and prepare a comprehensive report for the School Board. We hope to complete this phase in April and early May. Following the report, the Board will identify priorities for the upcoming November Election and seek public support for facility improvements. You can be a part of this process by reviewing the Ideation Session Results for Phase I, which can be found at www.bemidji.k12.mn.us under the District tab, Board of Education tab, and find the Bemidji Schools Overall Ideation Session Results – April 21, 2014. You are encouraged to call Dr. Jim Hess, Superintendent of Schools, at 218-333-3100 ext. 105 and share your thoughts regarding school facilities for Bemidji Area Schools.
