Cheers
To
100 Years!
Celebrating Planned Parenthood!
100 Years of Family Planning
As we cheer to 100 years of Planned Parenthood, we celebrate the
enormous progress of our movement. Birth control, once out of reach,
is widely available. Abortion, once a crime, is safe and legal. Planned
Parenthood, once a single brownstone in Brooklyn, has 650 health
centers across the country.
One hundred years of care have changed everything. Women are now
close to half the workforce and more than half of college students.
Unintended pregnancy, teen pregnancy and abortion rates have fallen to
historic lows.
Our progress was hard won. And 100 years later, our fight is more
crucial than ever. With opponents of Planned Parenthood taking key
roles in Congress and the new presidential administration, new attacks
on reproductive health care access and rights have just begun.
This year, congressional Republicans have announced plans to “defund”
Planned Parenthood. What this cruel proposal would actually do is deny
Planned Parenthood the ability to receive Medicaid reimbursements.
Each year, Planned Parenthood California Central Coast provides
lifesaving health care to 35,000 people at five health centers, including
cancer screenings, birth control, and sexually transmitted
infection testing and treatment. The majority of our patients rely
on Medicaid for their care. We cannot let them down. We will
fight this proposal with everything we’ve got.
As we find ourselves in the fight of our lives, we believe more
than ever that Planned Parenthood is the solution – not the
problem. We are so happy to count you as a partner in our
work! Together, we will never stop working to ensure
that every person has the information and care they
need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their
dreams – today, tomorrow, and for another 100 years.
Jenna Tosh, Ph.D.

Planned Parenthood California Central Coast
Special Friends Of Planned Parenthood
Thank you to our sponsors, underwriters and volunteers
for their generosity and spirit.
C hoice A ffairs Co-Chairs 2017
In this year of our centennial celebration, we look back with pride to 1916 when
the first birth control clinic opened in Brooklyn, NY, setting off a public battle
surrounding birth control and reproductive rights. One hundred years later,
Planned Parenthood is still providing critical health services to women and
men across the country. But, as we begin our second century of care, we are
facing new and significant assaults on women’s health and reproductive rights,
including barring Planned Parenthood from receiving reimbursements for
family planning services through federally funded programs. For our Planned
Parenthood Central Coast, this would mean a loss of 71% of our budget.
Now, more than ever, your gift, your participation and your advocacy are
critical to the services and access we provide to those who need us most. We
are grateful to each and every one of you for your commitment to stand with
Planned Parenthood, and to ensure that all who need care, regardless of their
circumstances, can come to Planned Parenthood.
Cheers to 100 years…and 100 more to come. Your continued support will be
critical to our ability to provide care, no matter what.

Winging & Singing
Birding With Joan Lentz
Sing, sing, the dawn chorus is chattering and the birds are on the
wing! What better way to start your day than a morning walk along
the Carpinteria Coast at the Salt Marsh Reserve, normally closed to
the public, where you can observe local birds and other wildlife?
It all begins with fresh pastries, juice and coffee when you arrive
at the gated entrance to the Carpinteria Salt Marsh, UC Natural
Reserve System. Naturalist Joan Lentz will meet and welcome you.
Joan, the author of several seminal books on birding and the ecology
of the Santa Barbara area, is an expert birder. You will have a
chance to learn from one of the area’s most inspiring teachers before
she retires.
Joan has a contagious joie de vivre and enthusiastically shares her
wealth of information and knowledge with all levels of birders! She
has taught at Santa Barbara City College, the Santa Barbara Botanic
Garden and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. As a
complement to Joan’s presentation, Andrew Brooks, from UCSB’s
Marine Science Institute and director of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh,
will join us to provide information about the marsh and the local
wildlife.
Due to an exceptionally low tide that day, a large number of birds
are expected to be living at the marsh. Bundle up, bring your
binoculars or scopes, put on your walking shoes, and get ready for a
fascinating, two-hour date with nature!
Special thanks to Maryan Schall for underwriting and to our cohosts Bobbie Offen and Laura Newman, who have volunteered to
assist in making certain you will never forget this informative and
enjoyable tour.

Margaret Sanger,
Controversial Crusader
As the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger is
well known for courageously establishing the organization at
the cost of personal fines and imprisonment. She championed
progress and worked with civil rights leaders, immigrant
women and black communities. However, she left behind a
conflicting legacy by also aligning herself with eugenicists, a
troubling fact that does not align with Planned Parenthood’s
strong commitment to equality.
Anne and Matt Hall invite you to attend an informative
gathering at their beautiful Montecito home to learn more about
this icon of reproductive rights. Guests will gather to enjoy a
glass of wine and some nibbles, followed by a sumptuous lunch
prepared by the fabulous Lorraine Lim Catering.
Following lunch and dessert, guests will hear an illuminating
presentation by Barbara Lindemann, Professor Emerita in
American and Women’s History at Santa Barbara City College.
Bonnie Lewis, a popular local actress and co-artistic director
of DramaDogs, will bring Margaret Sanger to life through a
dramatic reading from Voices from the Well, 2: Portraits of
Extraordinary Women, written by Terre Ouwehand.
“Ouwehand invokes the mystique of these amazing women…
always to the heart of their characters….”
~Laezer Schlomkowitz, director, actor

Bonnie Lewis for their donation of time and material, to Anne

Floral Finesse: The Art & Science
Of Flower Arranging
The art of flower arranging eludes most of us.
How are those roses and peonies and tulips
transformed into one cohesive piece of beauty—
sometimes romantic, sometimes whimsical, and other
times, modern?
Those in the know turn to Montecito florists
Hogue & Co. to create that perfect arrangement.
But, really, don’t you want to learn how to do it
yourself? This is your chance. Kristi Meland, one of the partners
at Hogue, will spend an afternoon at a beautiful home in Santa
Barbara teaching us some of the skills she’s honed through the
years. Kristi will demonstrate the techniques of selecting and
combining flowers. She’ll show us different approaches to producing
various arrangement styles, the importance of greenery, and her tips
on what elevates an arrangement from pretty to spectacular.
With buckets of complimentary flowers plus glass vases, you’ll have
the afternoon to play and experiment with different styles and a
variety of flowers until you have that one perfect arrangement…your
own masterpiece to take home.
Light snacks will be offered while you’re learning and working, all
in the perfect setting. Ann and Jeff Frank are opening their very
special art-filled home that has breathtaking views of the natural
beauty of Santa Barbara. Floor-to-ceiling windows and rooms filled
with their curated collection of art will inspire us to create our own
works of beauty.

Sex, Pregnancy & The Supreme Court:
What In The World Can We Expect Now?
Join Dr. David Bisno for another engaging and insightful
examination of the Supreme Court to help us understand all that
has transpired since his talk in April 2015.
Set in the lovely Founder’s Room of the Granada Theatre in Santa
Barbara, this presentation will focus on the ramifications of the
death of Justice Antonin Scalia, the refusal of Congress to confirm
any nominee of President Obama, the influence of a new justice
if one has been confirmed, and how all these events might affect
women’s health care and Planned Parenthood. Given the fluid
nature of politics, the subject matter is subject to change, but you
can count on a riveting presentation.
Dr. David Bisno is a retired ophthalmologist with degrees from
Harvard, Dartmouth and the Washington University School
of Medicine, St. Louis. He studied law with Laurence Tribe
at Harvard Law School and at the Law School of the College
of William and Mary. An entertaining speaker, he has honed
his abilities to make clear to all of us the subtle nuances and
competing interests inherent in constitutional law. We will learn
from David “those wise restraints that make men free.”
Many thanks to Dr. Bisno for sharing his insights, and to your host
Valerie Williams for making this all possible. Our appreciation

Beauty & The Feast:
Lunch In A Special Garden
You might not realize it, but when you stroll through the Cactus
Garden or wander through the extraordinary updated Insectary
Garden at Lotusland, you’re admiring the work of
Eric Nagelmann. Eric is the mastermind behind these projects
and some of the most beautiful gardens both locally and around
the world.
While in years past we’ve toured various private homes where
Eric’s work is on display, this year Eric is offering an intimate
experience as he opens his own Montecito garden just to us.
Unlike the carefully planned landscapes he’s created for his
clients, Eric’s garden is characterized by experimentation,
whimsy and wonder. It’s a reflection of his travels around
the world and his endless curiosity about plants and plant
combinations. We have a special chance to understand how this
garden is the source of so many varied ideas and possibilities, a
wellspring of creativity. Eric will tell us stories about some of the
gardens he’s created, how he conceived the combinations, and
what he’s learned through the years.
To make the afternoon perfect, James and Annie Sly, of Sly’s in
Carpinteria, will be our second creative force. They will prepare
an Italian country luncheon, to be served in this fascinating
garden.
Special thanks to Eric for opening his home and garden, to Chef
James and Annie Sly for donating the lunch and his culinary
skills. Appreciation goes to Pam Talbot and Minda Kraines for
organizing all the details and to Marnie Pinsker for underwriting

Enjoy the creativity of architect Jeff Shelton in his
design studio while he discusses his special method
for imaginative and often whimsical architectural
projects in Santa Barbara.
Jeff’s designs reflect his unique interpretation of
Spanish-influenced architecture while using metal art
to embellish and enhance the artistic ambience.
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, since you’ll take a walking
tour through Santa Barbara with Jeff to view some of his most
interesting creations. The tour will stop next at the eclectic home,
Vera Cruz, and will continue on to Cota Street Studios and El
Jardin, two multi-use buildings that display Jeff’s magical use of
tile and metal.
Our final stop will be at El Zapato, where our gracious hostess
Carla Lejade has opened her three-story home for this special

thousands of glowing tiles, intricate wrought iron and material
that mirrors the floral design in the floor and wall tiles.

Crafty Adventure In Bookland
There really is an “after-life” for handsome old books.
Many possibilities exist to “upcycle” those which have
been discarded.
“Old books that have ceased to be of service should
no more be abandoned than should old friends who
have ceased to give pleasure.”
~Bernard Baruch
No previous experience or supernatural powers are
required. Just show up with your imagination, your
creativity and an open mind.
A talented team of artists and crafters who volunteer at Planned
Parenthood’s annual book sale will be waiting to welcome you
when you arrive at the new book sale warehouse in Goleta.
They will guide you in using retired books to create fascinating
accents and accessories.
Just bring yourself or invite a friend, if you like. Everything you
need will be provided! As you work, enjoy lovely refreshments
and the camaraderie of friends. Then, before leaving with your
new creations, celebrate the opening of the new warehouse and
the future of the book sale with a champagne toast.

Cruising To Santa Cruz
Explore the history and buildings of Santa Cruz Island, within
the Channel Islands National Park. After a cup of coffee and
a breakfast snack, you’ll climb aboard and take a cruise with
Island Packers from the Ventura Harbor to this nearby, yet nearly
unknown, neighbor. Watch for an escort of cavorting dolphins
and sea lions and birds as you make the journey across the
channel.
After arriving at the pier, you’ll take a short hike before being
transported to the UCSB Santa Cruz Island Field Station. Located
in the central valley, this is one of the most remote sections of the
island. It is managed by The Nature Conservancy and is usually
inaccessible to the general public.
Enjoy a picnic lunch while Dr. Lyndal Laughlin, director of the
Santa Cruz Island Reserve (UCSB), gives you a briefing about the
island’s history and its early inhabitants. Marla Daily, president of
the Santa Cruz Island Foundation, will also be on hand to assist
with the tour and answer any questions you may have.
Afterwards, you’ll make a short trek to the ranch from the Field
Station to tour the Saddle Museum, Archaeology Museum, Chapel
and Cantina Vieja Museums, all of which feature information and
artifacts from the Caire and Stanton families.
On your return trip to the mainland sit back, relax and enjoy the
sunset.

Piñata-Crafting
With Latin Inspiration
Piñatas—those fanciful papier-mâché creations, filled
with sweets and treasures—have appeared in various
forms in many civilizations around the world for
thousands of years. Sometimes beautiful, occasionally
comical, they are always a source of entertainment.
The tradition likely originated in China, where
colorful papier-mâché figures were created to
welcome the new year. Later found in Italy and
Spain, they were made of clay pots adorned with colorful ribbon
and used in religious celebrations. Central and South American
civilizations, including the Mayans, created a game where the
players’ eyes were covered while they attempted to hit a clay pot
suspended by a string.
Join local Santa Barbara artists at a piñata-making workshop and
create your very own. Symbolic, or simply crafty, the choice is
yours, and the process is fun! While you mold your piece of art,
your creativity will be enhanced as you sample Latin-inspired
drinks and snacks. Take home your creation and enjoy it with
friends, or use it as a decoration.
¡Salud! to our local Santa Barbara artist friends for providing
this fanciful outlet for artistic expression and to Pam Talbot
and Lauren Pinsker for underwriting this imagination-filled
experience.

One Fish, Two Fish,
Print Fish, Chew Fish
There are many ways to create art, but you likely never thought
of your fish monger as a source for inspiration. Learning
Gyotaku, the ancient art of fish printing,
will change your mind! A Gyotaku print of a fish or “fish
rubbing” is created by using an actual fish as a printing object.
Possibly used by Japanese fishermen in the 1800s to record
the size and species of their catches, today the process is an
art form, capturing the delicate scales, fins and body shapes
of a variety of fish and other marine creatures. You will never
look at a fish in the same way again! Enjoy a serene afternoon
learning fish printing from professional printmaker Holly
Sherwin while sipping wine and taking in one of the most
magical views from the hills of Summerland, at the lovely
home of Suzy Cawthon. Each participant will be provided with
homemade Japanese paper, colorful inks and a cooler full of
ready-to-print fish (cleaned and prepared, of course!).
After completing your frameable work of art to take home, take
in the sunset and grab a cocktail to toast a most marvelous
evening spent with fellow artists. This will be followed by a
sumptuous seafood dinner provided by your hostesses, Suzy
Cawthon and Holly Sherwin.
Many thanks to both Suzy and Holly for hosting and
underwriting this imaginative and unique opportunity.

Getting In The Zone…
Funk Zone Scavenger Hunt
Remember going on scavenger hunts when you were
younger? Scrambling from place to place and
following the clues before your friends got there
first? It was so much fun!
Well, those good times are back, because a fantastic
hunt in the Santa Barbara Funk Zone is all planned
for you. Beginning at the Santa Barbara Winery,
the game rules will be explained while you enjoy light
snacks and sample their great wine offerings. Once teams have
been identified, the clock starts ticking. You and your group will
have exactly forty-five minutes to find as many of the hidden
objects as possible. Be sure to be alert and have your cell phones
handy to document your discoveries.
Once your team has completed the hunt, more fun lies ahead at
one of the Funk Zone’s latest additions, the Brass Bear Bistro.
This intimate space will be all yours to enjoy their yummy
appetizers, drinks and a full buffet dinner. Afterwards, while
eating scrumptious desserts, the winning scavengers will be
announced and prizes awarded.
This is an event you will not want to miss. Come get your funk
on!
Grateful thanks to both the Santa Barbara Winery and the Brass
Bear Bistro for their generous support, and to our underwriters,

Seductive Succulents
Thanks to the drought, many of us suffer from succulent
envy—that feeling you get when you see a perfected succulent
arrangement and wonder, “Why can’t I do that?” This year we
have the cure.
Molly Hutto, owner of Botanik in Summerland and the creative
force behind many of the best planters around, will show us just
how it’s done in a hands-on class in the lovely setting of her store’s
garden.
We’ll start with a picnic lunch while Molly explains how she goes
about planning her pots, offers tips for success, demonstrates
combinations that work and answers our questions. Then it’s your
turn. Using plants from Botanik’s extensive selection and antique
wooden containers from her private collection, Molly and her
assistant will help each guest create one attractive arrangement.
You’ll have the option to pick one of the pre-selected containers
provided by Molly, purchase an upgraded version or bring your
own!
By the end of the afternoon, you’ll have a lovely succulent
arrangement to take home—and to make you the envy of your
friends. Finally, one lucky guest will leave with something extra
special: we’ll raffle off one of Botanik’s magical creations.
Delicious lunch, lovely spot, talented teacher and a beautiful pot
of succulents…could there be a better way to spend an afternoon?
Special thanks to Molly for donating the plants, pots, special
raffle gift and her expertise, as well as to Jennifer Larkin for
underwriting the event, Karen McElwain for providing the lunch
and to Pam Talbot and Marnie Pinsker for lending a hand.

Musical Fun & Games
If you love Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, Name That
Tune, and trivia, and have a competitive streak,
you’ll find yourself in good company as we combine
music and trivia.
Dr. Derek Katz, from UCSB’s Department of Music,
teases our knowledge of musical history, composers,
opera, instruments and many other aspects of
all things musical. Although Dr. Katz is a classical
musician, his expertise covers a wide range of music, so your
special interest in Appalachian ballads or Broadway hits from
the ’40s might garner your team enough points to win the grand
prize!
Dr. Katz is a fabulous and funny speaker and is prepared to
amuse you with limericks, red herrings and double entendres.
He will pose questions to pique your curiosity as you pit your
team against the three other teams. There will be lots of laughs,
and the competition will be fierce—maybe even ridiculous, since
cheating is allowed and heckling the other tables is encouraged.
Betsy and Bob Manger are opening their beautiful Montecito
home for you to enjoy premium wine provided by The Brander
Vineyard and Foxen Winery & Vineyard and savor hors
d’oeuvres throughout the evening while you compete. Come
prepared for fun and games, then linger awhile on the Mangers’
spacious deck as the sun sets on this unusual and entertaining

Applause to our event hosts Betsy and Bob Manger and to cohost Valerie Williams for composing this event. Our gratitude
also goes to Dr. Katz for donating his time and expertise.

Drought-Tolerant Gardens
In Shangri-La
Believe it or not, the recipe for creating beautiful and droughtresistant landscapes mixes a classic approach to design using
European aesthetics with a large measure of pea gravel!
Pea gravel, a clean and permeable landscaping alternative which
requires no watering, is a signature ingredient of landscape
designer Paul Hendershot’s work. He creates landscapes that unite
a property with the architecture of a home and the life-style of the
owners who live there using classic European aesthetics. Form
and function work together creating clean and drought-resistant
landscapes highlighting the beautiful features of the Ojai Valley.
Meet at Beacon Coffee Company Cafe in downtown Ojai, where
you’ll mingle while enjoying a pastry and the best cup of coffee in
town. Then we’re off, by caravan, to view some of Paul’s best work.
The first visit begins with a great example of Paul’s talent where the
French-style of the European aesthetic is on full display. An allée
of olive trees leads to a landscaping celebration of water and trees,
featuring pools, rock walls and tree-shaded patios.
Next stop, a typical southern French garden also comes to mind.
Divided into “rooms,” it features a huge courtyard and lap pool, a
vegetable garden adjacent to the kitchen, fruit trees and a fireplace.
The final stop displays a garden with an Italian flair. Cypresses
and olive trees frame the tree-lined driveway that leads to a pool,
courtyard and separate garden “rooms.”
We’ll return to Beacon Coffee for a lovely farm-to-table lunch
provided by owners John and Jennifer Wheir.
Sincere appreciation to Shirley Thayer for underwriting and to
co-hosts Dorothy Elchoness and Paul Hendershot for arranging this
special tour.

The Growing Power Of Women…
Female Farmers in Ventura County
Female-run farms? Absolutely! Women comprise the largest
growing segment of farmers nationally, and Ventura County has
a strong representation. Join us to meet these amazing women
and learn more about how they have achieved success with their
operations on the ground.
First stop, meet fourth-generation farmer Alana King at the King
& King Ranch in Fillmore. This wonderful ranch, which has been
in the family for more than 100 years, produces avocados, citrus
and a “smattering of anything else” they can make grow.
The next adventure will begin as we caravan to Fig Tree Farms in
Santa Paula, where Susan Caughey is growing Australian finger
limes, Meyer lemons, pink lemons and Lamb-Hass avocados
in one of California’s most beautiful river valleys. Relish the
fragrance of these fruits as you relax while enjoying a delicious
al fresco lunch, prepared using fresh, seasonal ingredients
provided by one of the top chefs of Ventura County, Chef Tim
Kilcoyne of Scratch.
The last stop on our caravan tour will be at The Abundant
Table in Camarillo, with Sarah Nolan, director of programs &
community partnerships. This is a working farm that strives to
create greater access to sustainably grown foods, produced from a
consciousness of ecological, social and spiritual well-being for the
benefit of every Ventura County resident.
Special thanks to fifth-generation local farmer Helen McGrath for
organizing this tour, to all the farmers for welcoming us to their
properties, and to Chef Tim Kilcoyne for preparing this decadent
lunch.

Finger Lickin’ Chicken
& Fine Whiskey Sipp’n
With skin or without, soaked in buttermilk, beer batter or a
double coating of egg wash and seasoned flour…a serving of
humble chicken, fried to a golden brown with a crispy exterior,
is the ultimate American comfort food. Recently making a
comeback on the culinary scene, variations on the prep are
endless. Regardless of the recipe, there is nothing more downhome, more American or more delicious than a plate of fried
chicken, especially when paired with premier whiskey.
Patrick Melroy, local Santa Barbara artist and the “mastermaker” of fried chicken, is hosting a get-together in the kitchen
of the famed, late-night Santa Barbara eatery, The Blue Owl,
where he’ll share a few of his favorite chicken lickin’ recipes
with us. Patrick’s collection includes a creative variety handed
down from families who have coveted and mastered the
perfect summer Sunday meal. He’ll pair each with a flight of
spirits including bourbon, rye and scotch. If whiskey isn’t your
thing, there will be plenty of other cocktails and non-alcoholic
beverages available as well.
Cheers to Patrick for offering his time, expertise and secrets.
Special thanks to The Blue Owl for providing a space for us
to collaborate, cook, eat and imbibe; and to Pam Talbot for
underwriting this finger-licking-good afternoon.
