BSc Thesis proposal - Permeability of sand-silt

Permeability testing on sand-silt mixtures
In hydraulic fills often stringent requirements are put on the allowed fine material
(clay/silt) content of reclamation material. The purpose of these requirements is to
guarantee that the functionality of the structure is not impaired by the negative
effect of fine content on the mechanical properties of sand-mixtures. It is however
not always certain if, and to what extent, these fines influence the soil behaviour.
Dredging companies like Van Oord are interested in finding out more on this
impact. In previous research the impact of increasing fine content on the
permeability characteristics of sand-mixtures has been investigated by falling
head testing. In this BSc-thesis it is proposed to extend this study on coarser
sands with fines to gain more information on the behaviour of these mixtures.
Research question: How does an increasing fine content impact the permeability
of coarse sand-silt mixtures?
