The Artist

Michael Healy was born and raised on the Cape Cod seashore. Though
New England has always been his home base, by the age of ten his
father’s Air Force career had carried Michael halfway around the globe,
exposing him to a variety of cultures which fueled a desire to express
himself artistically. At the University of Notre Dame Michael studied
metal sculpture and developed a passion for design. After a tour of
duty in the Air Force, his marriage and the birth of his four children,
Michael chose to use his knowledge and interest in metalwork to open
his own foundry on the banks of the Blackstone River in Rhode Island.
“I have always enjoyed the challenge of creating an artistic
design and working out how best to craft it.”
Michael worked casting architectural bronze and restoring historic
statues throughout New England before shifting focus to his own
original artwork. Combining his knowledge of the foundry sand
casting process and his own desire to create highly functional forms
of art, Michael was inspired to develop his famous line of unique door
knockers and doorbell ringers. Thus started his venture making artistic
decorative hardware for your home.

How I create my doorbell Ringers...
All of my doorbell ringers are hand crafted using the age old art of sand casting.
My Doorbell Ringers are a unique adaptation of the long neglected doorbell. They were designed
to provide an exquisite alternative to a lone button or a decorative back plate. A multitude of
choices enable you to showcase your personality. I wanted to create Doorbells with the sculptured
beauty of my Door Knockers for those people who wanted to compliment their existing Michael
Healy Door Knocker or who just wanted to welcome their guests in style.
Concept to Form
The Process
It starts with a sketch which is then sculpted
into a three-dimensional model.
The Art of Sand Casting
Impressions of the model are made in fine
sand into which 2300o metal is poured. Each
mold can be used only once making each
piece truly unique.
Raw Casting to Polish
After the metal cools, the sand is broken
away and the raw metal castings emerge.
Through multiple phases of grinding and
polishing, accents and highlights are added
to each piece.
Lasting Protection
Each doorbell ringer receives a baked
polyurethane finish similar to the clear
coat finish on your car to provide years of
protection. Michael’s signature confirms its
authenticity and quality craftsmanship.

Brass and Bronze are copper-
based alloys. The yellow brass alloy used
in many of Michael’s designs contains 70%
copper and produces a warm, traditional
brass look. Red bronze contains almost
85% copper. This additional copper
content gives the bronze alloy its rich,
reddish undertone. The mirrored finish
of polished brass and polished bronze
is achieved through varying degrees of
sanding and buffing. Michael uses these
techniques to highlight or accent the
raised areas on a piece.

a warm silver color which is attained
by adding nickel to bronze. Michael
combines a high polished finish
with brushed accents to generate a
contemporary look. A stainless steel
brush on a high speed lathe is used
to create the brushed effects. The
mirrored finish of polished nickel silver
is achieved through varying degrees
of sanding and buffing. Michael uses
these techniques to highlight or accent
the raised areas on a piece.

Mounting Instructions
Your Michael Healy doorbell ringer is designed to
quickly and easily replace your existing doorbell.
1. Turn off the power to your
existing doorbell. Remove your current doorbell button and disconnect the two wires.

2. Using the supplied screw,
attach your new mounting
bracket to the doorjamb pulling
the wires through the large
buttonhole in the mounting
bracket. (Note: Some designs
require the removal of the body
of the doorbell ringer from the
mounting bracket before the
bracket can be attached to the
wall. The body is attached to the
mounting bracket with a single
screw.)
Does my doorbell ringer require special care?
We coat each doorbell ringer with a clear,
catalyzed polyurethane. This protective finish is
similar to the clear top coat on an automobile.
Washing of your doorbell ringer with a mild soap
and water will help to maintain its vibrant shine.
Occasionally coating the doorbell ringer with
car wax will greatly extend the life of the original
finish. Do not use a brass cleaner or an abrasive
pad as these will damage the clear coating and
the original polished finish.
I live near the beach. Will one finish last longer
than the others?
All Michael Healy Doorbell Ringers receive the
same protective coating. If properly cared for,
there will be little difference in the durability of
the various finishes.

What can I do if my doorbell ringer tarnishes?
Even though Michael Healy Doorbell Ringers are
coated with a clear catalyzed, polyurethane finish,
copper alloys will patina with time. Age and
the environment may change the appearance
of your doorbell ringer. While some prefer this
natural aging process, our refinishing program
gives you the option of restoring your doorbell
ringer to look like new. Simply ask about our
refinishing program.
