One of the leading voices in the Critical Librarianship movement, Drabinski is the Coordinator of Library Instruction at Long Island University, Brooklyn, and an adjunct faculty member at Pratt Institute. She is a prolific author, editor, and speaker on social justice and librarianship and she is an active voice in the #critlib social media community. Drabinski will share the history of the #critlib movement and perspectives on the intersections between librarianship and social justice, delving into topics ranging from diversity and inclusion to information literacy instruction and metadata. Next, the workshop will feature a selection of Lightning Talks by regional librarians involved in the #critlib community. Lightning Talk speakers will lead workshop attendees into smaller affinity group conversations designed to focus on the areas within the wide span of librarianship, including public and school libraries. Maryland Library Legislative Day The Maryland library community will join together in Annapolis on Tuesday February 14, 2017 to visit our elected officials, to hear the day proclaimed Maryland Library Day in the House and Senate, and to socialize in the evening with members of the House, Senate and the library community. This has been a tradition in Maryland and one that many look forward to annually. We begin the day with a briefing from the MLA Legislative Panel; they will tell us about bills and issues that affect us as a library community that are being discussed in Annapolis. We will process to the State House for the proclamation; we will get to see our State Librarian (Irene Padilla) as well as the President of MLA (Kathleen Teaze) on the floor of the Senate accepting this award. The rest of the morning and early afternoon are open for visits to your elected officials. The MLA office will prepare you with talking points about the bills/issues as well as give you a folder for each of your representatives and senators containing information about state library programs. There is space in the folder to include information about your specific county/system. Be sure to come to the Senate Office Building at 5:30pm to meet your legislators as well as discuss your visits with other librarians, and enjoy some light refreshments.
