Luganda-English Dictionary Leah Sternefeld and Sseguya Francis Nickshere 2015 Preface This dictionary was written by a learner and a native speaker of Luganda. It was meant to provide a basic vocabulary for learners of Luganda with an indication of the class of a noun and the modified stem of a verb. It is however not a scientific result of research. By asking native speakers of Luganda we tried to include various modern-day meanings of a word and even slang. We thus apologize for possible spelling errors or insufficient translations. Nevertheless, we are confident it can be used as a helpful source for learners of Luganda to understand the general meaning of a word. Use of the Dictionary 1. Nouns The nouns are given in their original form including the initial vowel that is sometimes dropped in Luganda. The classes are defined by number: Class I Sg I Pl II Sg II Pl III Sg III Pl IV Sg IV Pl V Sg V Pl VI Sg Class Prefix (o)mu (a)ba (o)mu (e)mi (e)n (e)n (e)ki (e)bi (e)ri/(e) (a)ma (a)ka example omuntu abantu omucungwa emicungwa ente Ente ekitabo ebitabo ettooke amatooke akatunda VI Pl (o)bu obutunda VII Sg VII Pl IX Sg IX Pl X Sg (o)lu (e)n (o)ku (a)ma (o)tu olulimi Enimi okutu amatu otuulo translation person people orange oranges cow cows book books banana bananas passion fruit passion fruits language languages ear ears sleep 2. Verbs In order to achieve alphabetic order the oku- prefix for the verb has been dropped and only the stem of a verb is given in the first column. In the second column the modified stem for the past tense and sometimes the irregular first person singular can be found. Personal Prefixes: S I N G P L Per son 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3.
