The Chronicle Ainsworth United Church of Christ - - July 2010 School in Summer? Yes, Time for more UCC History A little history lesson about the UCC is our focus this month, taken from the UCC website....The United Church of Christ came into being in 1957 with the union of two Protestant denominations: the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches. Each of these was the result of a union of two earlier traditions. 1. The Congregational Churches were organized when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Plantation (1620) and the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (1629) acknowledged their essential unity in the Cambridge Platform of 1648. 2. The Reformed Church in the United States traced its beginnings to congregations of German settlers in Pennsylvania founded from 1725 on. Later, its ranks were swelled by Reformed immigrants from Switzerland, Hungary and other countries. 3. The Christian Churches sprang up in the late 1700s and early 1800s in reaction to the theological and organizational rigidity of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Baptist churches of the time. 4. The Evangelical Synod of North America traced its beginnings to an association of German Evangelical pastors in Missouri. This association, founded in 1841, reflected the 1817 union of Lutheran and Reformed churches in Germany. The characteristics of the United Church of Christ can be summarized in part by the key words in the names that formed our union: Christian, Reformed, Congregational, Evangelical. of Christ, we declare ourselves to be part of the Body of Christ—the Christian church. We continue the witness of the early disciples to the reality and power of the crucified and risen Christ, Jesus of Nazareth. Reformed. All four denominations arose from the tradition of the Protestant Reformers: We confess the authority of one God. We affirm the primacy of the Scriptures, the doctrine of justification by faith, the priesthood of all believers, and the principle of Christian freedom. We celebrate two sacraments: baptism and the Lord's Supper (also called Holy Communion or the Eucharist). Congregational. The basic unit of the United Church of Christ is the congregation. Members of each congregation covenant with one another and with God as revealed in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit. These congregations, in turn, exist in covenantal relationships with one another to form larger structures for more effective work. Our covenanting emphasizes trustful relationships rather than legal agreements. Evangelical. The primary task of the church is the proclamation of the Gospel or (in Greek) evangel. The Gospel literally means the "Good News" of God's love revealed with power in Jesus Christ. We proclaim this Gospel by word and deed to individual persons and to society. This proclamation is the heart of the leiturgia— in Greek, the "work of the people" in daily and Sunday worship. We gather for the worship of God, and through each week, we engage in the service of humankind. --compiled/written by Traci Hodgson, Christian. It is summer time, but the living isn’t easy. Life has plenty of challenges that do not acknowledge the seasons- health struggles, death, economics, employment or lack of, relationships, family issues… We still have oil pouring into the Gulf, two wars that the US is embroiled in, epidemic homelessness, eroding of employment protection, hate campaign against undocumented immigrants, and much noise from the far reacting against what seems to be a caring for the greater good. I get confused because the same folk who cry family values seem to be fighting against the family values I grew up with- caring for the less fortunate, not squandering resources, “doing unto others what I would have done unto me,” valuing education, peace-making, and transformation to make the world a better place. Summer time is a time of transition too, especially for our young people- sometimes scary, uncertain and just new. What they are going to do, where will they find jobs, where and how will the next stage of education be are all questions that they struggle with, as they determine the road they are going to take. I do not have answers for all the questions, but I do know that there is wisdom to be found in many places through many people. There are the Bible stories that remind us time and again that God is with us throughout the journey and will never abandon us- Elijah’s story, Abraham’s, Ruth’s, and the ministry of Jesus- all reminding us of God’s love. There are folk in our congregation and in our lives who can be God’s still small voice in our lives, who can encourage us, urge us, guide us and remind us that we are loved. One of the late Hyacinth “Cinthia” McBride’s favorite poems was by Robert Frost, and to those who are trying to decide what is next and where they are going, I offer this wisdom from her and from the poet, “Two roads diverted in a wood, and I—I took the one less I hope you find some easy living this summer in spite of the challenges, and I wish for you blessings on your journey through life. "Grief can burst in upon the best regulated life without invitation. Or it can be seen clearly in the distance as it creeps with unrelenting pace upon the sacred premises of home and family life. Yet, however it comes, grief must be met with powerful resources of mind and spirit so that life will grow through the experience, not be devastated by it" (from You and Your Grief by Edgar N. Jackson). Rev. Ann Duffy and members of Ainsworth United Church of Christ are interested in starting a ten week "Grief Support" group. We will be using the text, Understanding Your Grief by Dr. Alan Welfelt. If you or someone you love has experienced a loss this past year we would like to invite you to join us in exploring how grief affects our lives and how we might journey through it. Potential members of the group are invited to contact Rev. Ann at 503-661-7666 or [email protected] Calling all members to the Quarterly Congregational Meeting, July 25. Building & Grounds Over a year ago the beautiful old sanctuary hanging light fixtures were retired and it is now time to send them to their next home, so to speak. There are 10 in total: 8 large and 2 medium. We’ve been offered about $30.each for most of them, as is, and I wonder if there are any church members who would like one or more of them “as is” and would pay for them? They are in the choir room off the sanctuary (but don’t take them without making arrangements w/ me). July 2010 Nurture Commission For many, summer is a time for camping, travel, or enjoying visit with friends and families. As we approach summer it is an opportunity to give thanks to people who have served in many ways in various educational ministries of the church. As we wind down the academic year, I give thanks to those who have worked as teachers or helpers with our Sunday School; volunteer drivers, planners and chaperones for our youth activities; leaders, teachers, and participants in our varied adult education opportunities; to the Christian nurture commission for their wisdom and work, and to pastor and staff for their continued support and guidance. The Nurture Commission is grateful for those of you who have responded to the invitation to fill out our adult education survey. In an effort to insure maximum participation, we will have a revised survey to share with the congregation on Sundays through July 11th. Even if you have filled out a survey, we invite you to take a few minutes to fill out the survey and return it or place it in the Christian Nurture mailbox in the library. The survey will help the Nurture Commission plan for future educational activities. In July we will have a one room Sunday school for children up to the third grade. The classes will include special presentations as members of the congregation share their gifts and insights with the students. I hope that you have a great summer and spend time to hear and respond to the call of the still speaking God. Let me know if you want them or if I should go ahead and sell them to the bidder? -Holly (503.701.8283) * Worshiping God * Ministering to Each Other * Nurturing our Spiritual Journeys * Promoting Justice * Serving the Local & Global Communities 5 Ainsworth UCC online at www.ainsworthucc.com Summer Family Event at Fishhawk Lake Saturday, July 24 The Ministry Commission would like to invite the friends and families of Ainsworth to a fun and relaxing day at Fishhawk Lake, just north of Vernonia, Oregon. Ministry With Older Adults Our Celebrated Christian for the Month is… Ed Slaughter Hello MWOA’ers… Spring has come & gone without bringing its warm & sunny days. Summer officially arrived on June 21, 2010 without any sun or warm weather. ”Where O Where” have our warm sunny days gone? On Sunday, June 20th, we celebrated Fathers’ Day with our annual “Very Berry Sundaes” but with cold, rainy weather. No Sun yet! Tuesday, June 22nd, the MWOA group traveled down near Salem to the Oregon Gardens, the trip we tried to make 2 different times last year. The weather was still cool but with promises of sun and warmth. It was a good trip with 21 folks going We toured the grounds, some rode the train and then we all had a nice lunch at the gardens. Jean Bucciarelli once again took wonderful pictures of the flowers and us. We are currently in the process of planning our annual retreat for September at Menucha which is scheduled for Tuesday the 28th of Sept. This year the retreat will have more free time for folks to wander around the beautiful grounds & we’ll do more discussions following our speaker. So, put the date 9/28/2010 and the cost of $30, on your calendar now so you can go. More information will be shared in the August Chronicle. We have been meeting for 12 years.
