This week we have looked at how commas are used. The children have discovered there
are several reasons why commas are used. Commas put a pause within sentences. They
are also used to separate items in a list, to separate additional information and to break
up longer sentences into smaller parts to make more sense.
The sentences below are taken from an information book about mammals. The commas
have been removed. Copy these sentences, putting in the missing commas.
1. A hedgehog is small with a spiny body.
2. Many common animals such as dogs are mammals.
3. Male lions have a large shaggy mane around their neck.
4. Lions yawn when they are tired, just like humans do.
5. In Safari parks lions are fed on meat.
6. Some giraffes have spotty coats while others have patches.
7. When baby monkeys are born they are carried by their mother for about two months
until they are old enough to look after themselves.
8. Most monkeys spend a lot of time in the trees so they need to be good at climbing.
Challenge
Can you write 3 more sentences about animals. Your sentences need to include commas.
Try to write in the style of non chorological report in an information book. (In the
present tense and the 3rd person)
Maths
This week we have looked at reading and writing time.
Use the blank clocks faces to draw the times of a typical school day. Make a list all the
things that happen on a normal day. E.g. wake up, eat breakfast, walk to school, play time,
start of lessons, home time, dinner time, bedtime. Write the time for each event on the
analogue clock, write the time in words and write the digital time.
