Halloween at it Roots
Once a year we get to pretend to be someone else and get candy for saying trick
or treat, but have you ever wondered how this tradition came around and where it
originated?
Halloween dates back to an ancient Celtic festival called, “Samhain” (pronounced
sah-win). On this day they believed that the boundary between the living and the
dead became blurred or weakened and that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
The Celtics also believed that the presence of otherworldly spirits made it easier for
Druids (Celtic priests) to make predictions about the future. They would use these
predictions as a source of comfort and direction throughout the winter.
The reason why we dress up and wear masks on Halloween is because it used to be
that people were afraid they would see ghosts, so they would wear “disguises.” They
would also place bowls of food outside to appease the ghosts and prevent them from
entering their homes. This is how trick or treating came around but back then it was
known as “Souling.”
Children or beggars would go Souling for “Soul Cakes,” which were spiced cakes
filled with raisins. In return for the treats they would offer up prayers to souls that
were trapped in Purgatory. The Purgatory was a Catholic belief that those who were
going to heaven needed purification, so that they could achieve holiness to enter the
gates of heaven. The souls that were trapped here couldn’t leave until they achieved
the holiness they needed to get into heaven, so people would offer up prayers to get
them out.
Along with beliefs there were also many superstitions that came along with Halloween, some of the most common ones are spilling salt, black cats,
walking under ladders, breaking a mirror, or stepping on cracks. These things made people paranoid that they would have bad luck for years, so they
tried their best to not do or see any of these things. Even today superstitions still plague the holiday.
Halloween has grew throughout the years and has now became a holiday of pleasure where children go out wearing their favorite cartoon character
costume and getting candy. This has resulted in spending billions of dollars annually on Halloween and trillions of happy children. Halloween is a
holiday for everyone to enjoy and celebrate and now you know where it originated.

Here Comes Treble
We travel to Piedmont to
see our Band at it’s finest,
competing against other
school bands.
A large amount of confidence is coming from the
band as they prepare to do
more than just win the competition. They want to have
the band being successful as
a unit rather than only being
compared to other bands.
“We will do our best to
dominate every band we
come across in this competition,” confidently says senior
MeKayla Lee. “We have
been practicing over and over
again, and I am sure we have
the Best Overall Trophy on
lockdown this year.”
They will be scored again
based on their performance,
with one being the best score
you can get, and four being
the worst. The band will
be judged on positioning,
timing, how they compose
themselves, and their overall
performance. Hearing them
practice and seeing them perform at our Football games
gives us much more confidence in their ability to perform to their best, and to get
the ones that they deserve.
“I hope we do good,
going up against eight different bands is going to be
a challenge, but it is a challenge worth taking because I
think our band is strong and
disciplined enough to end up
on top,” band player Crystal
Moore says.
In the end they
wound up on top getting all
ones in everything. Taylor
Walker won Best In Class.
So congrats to all of our band
members, and let’s all give
thanks to them for representing our school like that, and
hope for the same kind of
results next time we go to an
intense competition like that.

Dump Road - Ladiga Trail
By: Nick G.
Many people claim to have seen many different ghostly things, primarily people in old-fashioned clothes walking the road, a possible former
slave being hung from atop an embarkment. It is rumored that somewhere along the road is the site of a former slave quarter, from which
horrible screams can be heard.

The last season left off with
the death of Reg Monroe leaving the whole town devastated.
Reg was the mastermind behind

USMNT Review
The United States men’s national
team suffered a loss to Mexico 3-2
it was a well played game going
into extra time and it created many
amazing chances and goals. The
first goal was a nice passing canal
between 3 Mexican players. The
next goal for the U.S was off of a
set piece routine by Michael Bradley kicking it towards Geoff Cameron and Cameron heading it into
the back of the net. Those were the
only two goals in the whole game
both scored in the 10th and 16th
minutes. There was also a very
heated moment when a few words
were exchanged between a Mexican
and an American player, the cause
of this was because the Mexican
player had slide tackled Brad Guzan
America’s goalkeeper.
The first goal in extra time was
in the 96th minute from a pass to
a goal. The next goal from the U.S
was made by Bobby Wood, he got
a through ball, and scored in the
108th minute to make the game
tied once again at 2-2, and the final
goal made by Mexico was an insane
volley that completely killed the
USMNT spirit in the 118th minute
and the final score at 3-2 in an unfortunate loss to Mexico.
Costa Rica: On October 13th 2015
Costa Rica faced off against the
USMNT. The result was a 1-0 loss
to the Costa Rican national team in
Harrison, New Jersey. It was the
final game before the World Cup
Qualifying which was a disappointing loss which was their fourth loss
straight in the CONCACAF for the
U.S. Before the game the U.S head
coach Jurgen Klinsmann said he
wanted to see heart in his team but
at the end of the game the U.S had a
total of 6 yellow cards.

History of Halloween
Candy
History of Halloween
Costumes
Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween if we didn’t have candy, so where did
all of the candy come from? When the custom of trick-or-treating started
in the 1930s and early 1940s, children were given everything from homemade cookies and pieces of cake to fruit, nuts, coins and toys. In the 1950s,
candy manufacturers began to get in on the act and promote their products for Halloween, and as trick-or-treating became more popular, candy
was increasingly regarded as an affordable, convenient offering. It wasn’t
until the 1970s, though, that wrapped, factory-made candy was viewed
as the only acceptable thing to hand out to all the little ghosts and goblins
that showed up on people’s doorsteps. A key reason for this was safety, as
parents feared that real-life boogeymen might tamper with goodies that
weren’t store-bought and sealed.
Every year, kids — and sometimes adults — dress up
in ridiculous outfits and storm the streets, on a mission to ring
strangers’ doorbells and fill bags with candy. As kids, we accept
trick-or-treating as normal behavior, but the October 31 tradition is really quite strange when you think about it. The practice
of wearing costumes on Halloween may have originated in the
Celtic festival of Samhain, which was a pre-Christian celebration that fell on 31 October or 1 November in various Celtic
nations.
It was seen as a liminal time, when the spirits or fairies, and the souls of the dead, could more easily come into our
world. After the Christianization of Ireland in the 5th century,
some of these customs may have been retained in the Christian
observance of All Hallows’ Eve in that region, and some continued to call the festival by the name of the ancient Celtic one,
Samhain, blending the traditions of their ancestors with Christian ones.
It is suGgested that the costumes were a means of imitating, or disguising oneself from others. It has also been suggested that the wearing of Halloween costumes developed from
Christian customs created in Western Europe around the 15th
century. The custom of guising at Halloween in North America
is first recorded in 1911, where a newspaper in Kingston, Ontario reported children going “guising” around the neighborhood.
The history is all very interesting especially comparing past and
present costumes that people wear. So what will you wear this
year?

Today, when it comes to Halloween candy, a number of the most popular
brands are enduring classics. Such as Hershey Bars, Milky Ways, M&M’s,
and many more.
Wherever you turn this
October, candy beckons.
Americans will spend an
estimated $2 billion on candy
during the Halloween season
this year. So how much will
you spend this year?
