Gillen, high school, undergo changes
by Shelley Gillespie
September 2 marked
the beginning of the
school year for both P.J.
Gillen Elementary School
and
Esterhazy
High
School (EHS), and with
the 2014-2015 school year
beginning, students and
families will have some
staffing changes to get
used to, as well as other
changes to the yearly routine.
There is one new
teacher at EHS. Brandon
Krawetz will be teaching
Gym to Grade 6-8, Science
to Grade 7, and Accounting to Grade 10. His position is temporary, as he is
helping to fill in for a maternity leave.
Tara Straker, who was
originally replacing Miss
Chewka while she is on
maternity leave, has
moved into a permanent
position, and will be
teaching Science to Grade
8-9, Chemistry 20-30, and
Grade 10 Math. Jared
Walker will no longer be
teaching Chemistry, although he will continue to
teach Math 20-30.
Meaghan O’Rourke has
returned from maternity
leave. These changes
came about not only because of maternity leaves,
but also because of the va-
cancy created by Ed
Frazer’s retirement.
P.J. Gillen has undergone a larger number of
staffing changes and hires
for the new school season.
Brittany Sykes is the new
Kindergarten B teacher;
Kelsey Krahenbil now
teaches Grade 1; Kristen
Herperger has become a
temporary
Grade
2
teacher; Josey Rink is
both the Library teacher
and the Grade 5 Art
teacher; Terry Tocker has
taken a temporary maternity leave position as a
Co-teacher; Alisa Hine is a
part-time Education Assistant; Dawn Schroeder
is a new Education Assistant; Pam Zimmer is an
Education
Assistant;
Lynette Griffith has been
hired as the Library Technician/Education Assistant; and Annette Stauch
now holds the position of
Administration Assistant.
The Gillen September
newsletter is out, and parents have been advised
that the bus loading zone
has been moved to the
east side of the school,
onto St. Mary Street. The
“No Parking on School
Days” sign has been temporarily removed from the
south side of the school, on
4th Avenue, in hopes of

helping with traffic congestion during drop off
and pick up times. Staff
will keep parents updated
on these changes until the
transition is complete.
Starting in September,
public access to the school
will be through the main
doors, in compliance with
the Good Spirit School Division safe school policy.
Visitors are asked to
check in at the office when
you come to school.
All students and families are invited to access

‘Bleed Green’ blood donor clinic at EHS
by Shelley Gillespie
Esterhazy High School
(EHS) students are taking
part in the Saskatchewan
Roughrider ‘Bleed Green’
blood donor drive on Sept.
9, 2:30-7:30 p.m. in the
EHS junior gym.
The Roughriders have
pledged to give 101 blood
donations per month during the regular CFL football season, for a total of
505 donations, and are encouraging
fans
from
across the province to
share their Rider Pride
through blood donations.
The Riders hope that by
giving their support to the
blood drive, it will inspire
fans to donate as well.
This blood clinic is one
of three that the high
school puts on per school
year, according to Glenn
Marchand, who is a
teacher at EHS and is the
person that organizes the
blood drives at the school.
The clinic being held on
Sept. 9 has a goal of 155
donations, as part of the
‘Bleed Green’ program.
The other two blood clinics held at the school each
year occur in mid-winter
and late May.
Students at EHS are as-
sisting Marchand with
this drive by putting up
posters provided by the
Bleed Green program; setting up chairs and tables,
serving juice to donors, organizing crowd control
measures to keep donors
moving smoothly through
the clinic, and taking care
of the clean up after the
clinic. Marchand has approximately 23 students
assisting with this event.
Students wishing to help
with the blood donor clinics are invited to put their
name on a sign-up sheet
prior to each event.
Canadian Blood Services has certain criteria
that blood donors must
meet. Donors are asked to
be at least 17 years old; in
general good health; feeling well the day of the donation; weigh at least 50
kg (110 lbs.); to eat and
sleep
the
required
amounts for good overall
health; meet hemoglobin
requirements (a test is
done at the clinic before
donation is accepted);
bring a list of any medications; and to meet wait
times after any dental
treatments, colds or the
flu, and getting a piercing.
Technicians will provide a
questionnaire or ask the
appropriate
questions
prior to the donation.
This is the fourth season for the Bleed Green
program, and it has been
very successful to date.
Blood donor clinics are always held at the school,
and dates and times are
announced in the Town of
Esterhazy Newsletter.
The Preschool Playground Committee would like to announce
that they will begin building the playground at Esterhazy High School
on Sept. 21, 22 and 23 and are requesting volunteers.
Please call Robbyn Chomos at 306-745-6508
or Kristin Verner at 306-745-6699.
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
New business – Hawk Enterprises Corp.
by Shelley Gillespie
Jonathan Yanyu of
Stockholm
recently
brought a hydrovac/steam
business into Dubuc and
surrounding area to provide service to his local
hometown area.
Yanyu was raised in
Stockholm, and attended
school in the area all of
his life, first at Macdonald
School in Stockholm, then
attending his high school
years at Esterhazy High
School. Bringing these
services to this area has
been a long-term goal of
his, and he is happy to see
his plans come to fruition.
“I have worked all over
Canada for the past 10
years, acquiring experience in this field,” Yanyu
said, “and it is the highlight of my career to start
a company and bring this
business back to my home
area. This is where I always wanted to be able to
do this work, and I am
happy to bring this service here, back to cus-
tomers and businesses
that I am familiar with,
and have history with.”
Hawk Enterprises Corp.
is located in Dubuc, where
Yanyu has acquired shop
space, and hopes to be
fully moved into by the
end of September. He first
brought the service into
this area in March, 2014,
and is eager to finalize the
last few details on opening his shop doors. Moving
the business has not interrupted regular operation of services.
Hawk Enterprises Corp.
provides a number of
services to residential
homes, and urban and
rural businesses. Some of
the services that Hawk
provides include hydrovac; power washing;
culvert and pipe jetting;
town and rural sewer jetting; steam; tank cleaning
of a variety of tank types,
including fertilizer and
chemical tanks, custom
hauling, and much more.
Yanyu’s business also
employs two part-time
staff, and provides the
area with two hydrovac
units and two steam
units. Yanyu hopes to
eliminate any wait times
as well as to provide a
well-rounded list of services to customers in this
area. Hawk Enterprises
Corp. is a growing company, and the services
provided are useful to
both residential dwellers
and business owners operating in the area.
Prior to acquiring his
shop space in Dubuc,
Yanyu operated from his
parents farm, where he
also works, raising sheep,
pigs and chickens. He is
currently single, and celebrated his 30th birthday
on Sept. 5.
Yanyu is available 24
hours a day, seven days
per week, year-round.

Corp., call 306-579-9022.
School zone safety the
focus for September
With kids now back to
school
around
the
province,
September’s
traffic safety spotlight is
highlighting school zone
safety in Saskatchewan.
Police will be watching
for traffic violations in
and around school zones,
including drivers speeding in school zones, failing
to stop at stop signs or
yield signs, failing to yield
for pedestrians, failing to
obey crossing guards or
failing to obey school bus
cross arms and flashing
lights.
“The combination of the
high-traffic area and our
most vulnerable road
users – children – makes
school zones particularly
risky,” said Andrew Cartmell, President and CEO
of SGI. “Slow down and
stay alert to help keep
everyone safe.”
In 2013*, there were 24
collisions in school zones
in the province, resulting
in nine injuries.
“If you drive even 10
km/h over the posted
speed limit in a school
zone and you hit a child,
you increase the risk of seriously injuring that child
by up to 50 per cent,” said
Cpl. Doug Green, Forensic
Collision Reconstructionist with the RCMP. “And if
you’re going 50 km/h in a
Page 2
30 km/h zone, you might
not even have a chance to
hit the brakes before you
hit them.”
That’s why it’s so important to slow down. Speed
limits in school zones vary
by municipality, but they
will be marked with regulatory reflective signs. In
some
areas
of
the
province, reduced speeds
remain in effect evenings
and weekends, not just
during regular school
hours and some all year
long. Check with your
local municipal office if
you’re unsure of the rules
in your community.
Penalties for speeding
in school zones, under The
Traffic Safety Act, include
a fine of at least $190 and
three demerit points
under SGI’s Safe Driver
Recognition program.
Visit SGI’s website at
www.sgi.sk.ca for more information about school
zone safety or for details
about the Road Safety
Challenge and how #wecandrivebetter.
Some of the services that Hawk Enterprises Corp. provides include hydrovac, power washing, culvert and pipe

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor:
I would like to make a
complaint about Highway
8 on the horrible condition
that our bridge is in just
south of #8 and #22.
How can we possibly
keep driving over planks
that are rotting out, leaving us nothing but big
holes to sink our car into?
I just drive a small car
and every time I go over
this bridge, I have nine
fits thinking that at any
moment I am going to end
up in the bottom of the
creek. Something will
have to be done before
winter sets in, as how can
we tell where to drive
when these planks are all
covered up with snow.
No one seems to care
about the condition of #8,
and we are expected to
drive on it without having
an accident or wrecking
our cars. Where do we go
for help, apparently our
MLA does not give two
hoots about it, as nothing
has been done to repair
the bridge when it washed
out during that very
heavy rainfall.
We pay a lot of taxes, so
surely something can be
done to make our driving
safer. Someone will end up
being killed on the bridge
and then of course, it will
be too late to think about
fixing it to make it safe for
people to drive over.
SINCERELY,
A CONCERNED TAXPAYER,
LINDA GANDER,
SPY HILL, SASK.
Highway maintenance weekly report
Highway crews are repairing and replacing
thousands of signs along
provincial highways in
2014-15 as part of the government’s regular maintenance.
“Signs are one of the
most important safety features we install on the
provincial highway system,” Highways and Infrastructure
Minister
Nancy Heppner said.
“They notify drivers of
speed limits, control the
flow of traffic, and identify
curves or other changes in
the road. They are also
crucial navigation tools,
providing direction to
communities, services and
tourist opportunities.”
The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure’s
budget for signs in 201415 is $3.2 million. More
than 6,000 signs will require repairs and more
than 2,000 are to be replaced. Sign crews work
throughout the year.

EDITORIAL
Murray
Mandryk
reports
from the
Saskatchewan
Legislature
Enrollment speaks to rural
influence decline
There is no mistake
rural Saskatchewan has
been in a position of
power and influence for
the past seven years of
Premier Brad Wall’s government.
Saskatchewan Party
MLAs representing all
29 rural seats and nearly
two-thirds of the government caucus. Rural
Saskatchewan hasn’t enjoyed this much political
representation since the
1960s when the rural
population vastly outnumbered the urban
population and city
MLAs had no seats but
were elected at large.
The same can be said
for Wall’s cabinet that
now has no representation from Prince Albert
or Moose Jaw and only
three MLAs from each
Regina and Saskatoon.
In fact, Saskatoon representation actually decreased
to
three
ministers in the spring
shuffle from four with
both Rob Norris and Ken
Cheveldayoff
being
dropped.
Moreover, rural ministers represent all the
most influence portfolios
included finance (Ken
Krawetz), health (Dustin
Duncan) energy and economic development (Bill
Boyd), social services
(Donna Harpauer), government relations (Jim
Reiter), agriculture (Lyle
Stewart) and, of course,
the premier’s office occupied by Wall.
About the only urban
minister with a senior
portfolio right now is Education and Labour Minister
Don
Morgan
(although the justice
ministry headed by Gord
Wyant is often viewed as
part of the senior ministry group).
Admittedly, this is less
deliberate than it is the
nature of the Sask. Party
government.
Coming
into existence as a party
that opposed the largely
urban-based NDP, the
Sask. Party’s most senior
and arguably most talented MLAs happen to
come from the country.
Really, would it make
any sense to sit out a 15or 20-year MLA who
helped found the Sask.
Party just to get every
urban possible in cabinet?
But while this may be
the reality of the Sask.
Party’s makeup, it’s also
done as much as it possible can to cater to rural
needs.
Besides specific policies to reduce municipal/education taxes on
agricultural land, increase highways spending and build rural
hospital and nursing
homes, Wall has even appointed a minister in
charge of rural and remote health. That he
would assign one minis-
ter to this task while
asking another to handle
both the massive departments of education and
labour says much about
the influence of rural issues on this government.
The very fact that this
government choose to
keep the numbers of
rural seats the same –
despite the on-going decline in rural population
– also says much.
However, the slow
march of that population
shift from rural to urban
in Saskatchewan (which,
essentially, gains all
three of the new seats
the government will be
adding) says even more.
And if one wants to
gaze into the future, one
need not look much further than the student enrollment statistics.
The official new numbers won’t be out until
later this month or early
October, but expect a
story very similar story
to one we saw last year.
In 2013, student enrollment increased by
2,140 or 1.7 per cent to
170,582
students
t h r o u g h o u t
Saskatchewan. More in-
teresting, however, was
that most of that increase was concentrated
in the urban centres.
Rural school enrollment
continues to decline.
Sure, there are exceptions like the Estevan
and Weyburn in the oilbooming south east or
the bedroom communities around Regina and
Saskatoon in particular.
But the most tell-tale
statistics is that of the 28
school districts in the
province last, only 17 experience an increase in
enrollment, one had no
change and 10 suffered
declines.
At a time of population
growth unseen in this
province since the settlers flocked here for
cheap agriculture land,
that we so many rural
schools are still losing
kids tells us much.
And it reminds us is
that there’s no greater
factor in political influence than population.
School
enrollment
numbers suggest these
heady days of rural influence won’t last forever.
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 7 TO 13, 2014
The luckiest signs this week: Gemini, Cancer, and Leo.
ARIES
This is a great week to recharge your batteries and spoil yourself. Try to find time
to see your massage therapist or even your esthetician for some relaxing moments.
TAURUS
There are lots of people around you and so you want to look your best more often
than usual. Your elegance also allows you to widen your social circle.
GEMINI
Try and learn to delegate more so you won’t always be under so much pressure. You
tend to worry about everyone. Your children must learn to be more independent.
CANCER
You stumble over an amazing offer concerning a trip. However, you’ll have to be
patient about getting leave from work or to organize everything with the family.
LEO
A new diet is extremely beneficial for you. You could very well undertake this initiative after some sort of excess. A few changes at work are to your advantage.
VIRGO
You give a lot of importance to your love life. You experience moments of great happiness with your loved one, or if you’re single, you may finally meet your soul
mate.
LIBRA
You should benefit from a nice pay increase. What’s more, you could succeed in
building a small home-based company in which your creativity is an asset.
SCORPIO
You need a boost for your self-esteem. You start to feel better about yourself simply by acquiring some new clothes or even a new hairstyle.
SAGITTARIUS
You have quite a well-developed esthetic sense and you’re sure to use it to redecorate your home in some way. You find a nice little sum of money hidden away in
a pocket.
CAPRICORN
You express yourself with a lot of distinction and you also know how to speak from
the heart. You are in the spotlight, which causes a bit of jealousy on the part of certain people.
AQUARIUS
By using more of your creativity, you easily succeed in creating another income for
yourself. Despite having less free time, you have fun more often than before.
PISCES
There is lots of action on the horizon this week. At work, as at home, there are a
few adjustments to make. You do some compromising in order to re-establish a bit
of harmony.

Dream job – Part Two
Change is a good thing, Right?
Let’s face it, being a parent is hard. As your children grow, you have to trust that what
you’ve taught them has stuck. You also have to loosen the reigns and trust others with the
safety and well being of your children, whether it be daycares, babysitters and schools, etc.
Last week, upon picking up my children at school, instead of having them take the bus,
I noticed vehicles driving passed the parked buses. I was then informed that drivers no
longer have to stop when a bus is parked in the bus loading zones at the schools any longer.
I also noticed that the buses no longer had their flashing lights and stop signs extended.
As I waited for my Grade 1 child to join us outside, I continued to watch as one by one,
drivers pulled out and passed the parked buses. I was not the only parent that seemed confused with this change. It’s fair to say that some were quite upset at this change in fact.
When the flashing lights and stop arms were first implemented, granted, it took awhile
to get used to. But, because it was for the safety of our children, most drivers quickly grew
accustomed to waiting until it was safe, and the arms were swung back in place before
passing the bus. Although, there was still the odd driver who seemed to lack patience for
the safety arm to return to its resting position, and the lights to turn off. I often wondered
as I sat and waited for my children, if these drivers were parents picking their kids up?
If they were just someone in a rush to get to their destination that they felt the safety of
our children wasn’t important? Or they simply didn’t know the rules.
Every month I receive a Newspaper Toolbox magazine, which gives us ideas on sales
campaigns and upcoming Safety weeks, etc. I was browsing through October’s magazine,
and came across the National School Bus Safety Week page. The editorial on safety for
drivers in bus zones caught my eye. It reads as follows:
“Be aware of the danger zone around a school bus. It includes the area ten feet in front
of and on both sides of the bus. It may be annoying to get stuck behind a bus but remember that it is against the law to pass a bus with its stop arm extended and/or crossing
lights flashing.”
Hmmm . . .
I then read the school newsletter that was emailed. I always enjoy reading the school
newsletter, as a parent with children who forget to tell you of important events, until 10
minutes before we are out the door, I find it a very useful tool. (I have included the newsletter on Page 7 of this issue, as an additional reminder to parents).
My attention went to the paragraph under buses.
The first sentence informed parents of the changes for the bus loading. The moving of
the bus loading zone makes no difference to me. In fact, having a Grade 1 student be able
to come out her door, and have less of a walk to the bus is a good thing I think. The older
children can walk down to that end of the school, just like I did when I attended P.J. Gillen
way back in the “olden days” as my children keep telling me. However, the second sentence
states: “The bylaw also prohibits the use of school bus safety lights and stop arms in the
designated school zone. Please be patient with us as we try to ensure the safety of our
students as these changes take place.”
Hmmm again . . .
After receiving a few phone calls from concerned parents in regards to this change, the
concerned parent in me starting making phone calls to the powers that be to find out just
why these bylaws were made. Unfortunately, the individuals that I needed to speak with
were unavailable at both the town office and at Good Spirit School Division. So I guess I
have to wait a little longer to get to the bottom of it.
When our children leave our homes and care, we entrust their care and safety to the bus
drivers and teachers at the school, until they are out of school and back home. I think we,
as parents, are extremely lucky to have, in our community, the calibur of schools and the
teachers and staff that work there. Knowing that your children are in capable hands and
that they love their teachers is always a weight off any parent’s mind.
However, my question is: Is this bylaw really in the best interest and safety of our children? Or am I, like so many others, just an overly concerned parent?
Last week I discussed what a thrill being a food critic or a movie reviewer might be, at least
for me. My opinion hasn’t changed, but I did not mention the number one job that I would have
liked, and still would like, if having a family hadn’t already been my first choice.
I would like to be sent all over the world to do magazine articles and photos in exotic and remote
places, as well as the tried-and-true tourist locations that are on almost everybody’s list. Traveling and
learning about other places, other countries, other cultures, other people, is very exciting to me.
I have been to Las Vegas, and Hawaii, as far as the big vacation trips go. I believe that I would
be an excellent tour guide for Las Vegas, and provide a lot of tips for the first-time visitor. For me,
Hawaii would most certainly have to include photo shoot after photo shoot to share with my public. There is such a variety of urbanized and untouched land there.
If you plan to go to Las Vegas, some of the tips that I would give you would be that you do not
have to like gambling to go there. Just walking up and down the Strip provides you with hours
and hours of free experiences, such as the dancing water and light show in front of the Bellagio,
the Rainforest Café inside MGM Grand, the erupting volcano outside of The Mirage, the 9/11
tribute to the rescuers at the base of the Statue of Liberty at New York New York, and the free
outdoor showing of Sirens, which is a pirate show, at Treasure Island. That is just some of the free
stuff.
There are also exhibits and experiences that you can pay for, such as the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, the Coney Island roller coaster atop New York New York, the world’s tallest thrill rides
at the Stratosphere, and gondola rides at the Venetian.
Las Vegas also offers hours of pleasure for the avid shopper, as well as locations where you can
make purchases for as much as 80 per cent off, if you have all of the coupons that can be found at
hotels and being handed out on the street. Miracle Mile Shopping Mall has 170 shops, and Fashion Show Mall has an actual runway that rises in the middle of the centre of the mall.
If you are shopping for the best of the best, you can find Gordon Ramsey’s Steak House at Paris
Las Vegas, or shop the canal shops at the Venetian and treat yourself to Jimmy Choo, Versace, Chanel,
and many others. If you go to The Wynn, they have Manolo Blahnik and Rolex, just to name two.
If you are looking for the opportunity to see a show, say no more. Vegas has musicals, Cirque
du Soleil, top performers play there, such a Celine Dion, Cher, Jerry Seinfeld, Shania Twain, and
so many more it is hard to list them. There are even discount show vendors peppered along the
strip that provide show tickets, many of them and highly reduced prices. We purchased almost all
of our show tickets there.
There are low priced fast food restaurants along the strip as well, to help keep the cost of meals
down a bit. Denny’s, McDonald’s, and Subway are just a few of the familiar signs. This is augmented by the other end of the quality scale: you can eat at a restaurant owned by Wolfgang
Puck, Gordon Ramsey, Emeril Lagasse, and more.
Safety and comfort tips include not leaving a drink unattended. Vegas attracts all types, including a few that will take advantage of someone if they get the chance. Take more than one
pair of shoes, so that you can change from sandals to runners, for instance, because you will do a
lot of walking, and your feet will get sore. Changing shoes lessens the pain because the stress
points on your feet will change with the shoes. Carry a map of the Strip to help you find your way
faster. Learn to take the bus when you arrive, it will lower the mileage on your feet. Swim during the day because most pools are closed in the evening, at least when I was there. If you go to
the top of the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas, use the washroom first, because there is no washroom at the top, and getting back down can take some time. If you travel with a group of friends,
agree on seeing at least one thing that each person wants to see, and make plans ahead of time
on what you would do if separated and find yourself without cell service. (eg. Could plan to meet
at hotel if separated for more than one half hour, or at your next destination if that has already
been decided.
As you can see, I have lots to say, and I did not provide any information on Hawaii. Hawaii is
my top choice because the weather is perfect (no bugs, no screens), the views are phenomenal, it
is easy to find your way around if you are staying near Waikiki, which is the most popular destination. This was the vacation where I actually relaxed, felt right at home, and under no pressure
to do anything.
I do have my dream job, at least my first choice. But travel guide would be my top second choice.

SPORTS TALK - by Bruce Penton
Don’t bet the farm on Seahawks
After they demolished
Denver Broncos 43-8 in
last year’s Super Bowl,
the Seattle Seahawks are
overwhelming favourites
in most quarters to be the
first repeat winners of the
National Football League
championship since New
England Patriots in 2003
and ‘04.
Why wouldn’t they be?
The Seahawks’ roster is
virtually unchanged from
last year; quarterback
Russell Wilson is one year
older and, presumably,
one year wiser. Wide receiver Percy Harvin, arguably one of the top five
offensive players in the
league, is healthy again
after missing most of last
year. And there’s an aura
around the Seahawks
that says ‘dynasty.’
But as the 2014 season
gets nicely under way, it
says here the Seahawks
will not win the Super
Bowl next Feb. 1 in
Phoenix. Why not? Recent
history, that’s why.
Peter King of Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback told the
world recently about this
most amazing stat: The
last eight Super Bowl
champions recorded precisely zero (0) playoff victories the following year.
That means the Super
Bowl champs from one
CROP REPORT
Cool, wet weather continues to delay harvest operations
for
many
producers. Seven per cent
of the provincial crop has
now been combined, while
28 per cent is swathed or
ready to straight-cut. The
five-year average (20092013) for this time of year
is 14 per cent combined
and 23 per cent swathed
or ready to straight-cut.
The southwestern region is the furthest advanced, with 17 per cent
of the crop combined.
Seven per cent is combined in the southeast; six
per cent in the west-central region; three per cent
in the east-central and
northeastern regions; and
two per cent in the northwest.
Across the province, 65
per cent of the fall rye, 42
per cent of the field peas,
32 per cent of the winter
wheat, 23 per cent of the
lentils, nine per cent of
the mustard and two per
cent of the canola have
been combined. Fiftythree per cent of the
canola and 21 per cent of
the mustard is swathed.
Rainfall in the province
ranged from nil to 63 mm
in some southern areas.
Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are
rated as 24 per cent surplus, 74 per cent adequate
and two per cent short.
Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as
16 per cent surplus, 80 per
cent adequate and four
per cent short.
Pasture
conditions
across the province are
rated as 21 per cent excellent, 65 per cent good, 12
per cent fair and two per
cent poor. Ninety-seven
per cent of livestock producers have indicated
that they have adequate
supplies of water for their
livestock. At this time,
crop reporters are indicating that seven per cent of
the forage crops did not
get cut or baled due to excess moisture and drydown issues.
Hail, heavy rains, flooding and strong winds
caused some crop damage
this week. Many crops
have lodged and there are
quality concerns with
some pulses and cereals.
Farmers are busy with
harvest operations and
are hoping for improved
weather.
Saskatchewan Crop
Insurance Reminder
The deadline to seed fall
rye and winter wheat and
be eligible for winterkill
insurance is September
15.
One year ago
Warm and dry weather

along. Fourteen per cent
of the 2013 crop had been

year either failed to make
the playoffs the next year
or lost in the first round.
A run of negativity like
that has to end some time,
and as this new season
gets under way, it’s hard
to believe the Seahawks
will stumble badly enough
to not win at least one
playoff game this January.
On the other hand, should
Wilson suffer a serious injury,
should
corner
Richard Sherman get
sidelined, should running
back Marshawn Lynch
pout about his new contract, the fill-in pieces
might not be good enough.
And the Seahawks play in
undoubtedly the toughest
division in the NFL – division rivals San Francisco
and Arizona are legitimate playoff contenders,
too – so a couple of losses
at key times could leave
coach Pete Carroll’s team
on the outside looking in.
So if not the Seahawks,
who? Is there redemption
in the wind for Peyton
Manning after Denver’s
embarrassing loss to Seattle? Will the Chip KellyNick Foles combo in
Philadelphia
lead
to
Super Bowl success? Does
Tom Brady have one more
Super Bowl run left? Do
the 49ers bask in the glow
of their new stadium in
San Jose and ride quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s skills to a long
playoff run? Is this Aaron
Rodgers’ year to bring
Super Bowl glory back to
Green Bay?
Nothing is ever obvious
at the start of an NFL season. Except for two things:
Seattle is the heavy
favourite to repeat. And
past history says they
probably won’t.
• Jack Finarelli, of
SportsCurmudgeon.com,
recounting some of the
late Ralph Kiner’s malapropisms during his New
York Mets broadcasts: “If
Casey Stengel were alive
today, he’d be spinning in
his grave”; “The reason
the Mets have played so
well at Shea this year is
that they have the best
home record in baseball.”
• Brad Dickson of the
Omaha World-Herald: “A
91-year-old soccer fan left
about $636,000 in cash
and his house to the Norwegian club FL Fart. I
might suggest using
$635,000 of that to find a
new name.”
• Greg Cote of the
Miami Herald, on news
that Tampa Bay Bucs
were taking a look at former Dolphin Richie Incognito: “Well, bully for
them.”
• Mary Kay Cabot of
the
Cleveland
Plain
Dealer, on Twitter: “
Johnny Manziel started
losing this job right after
the draft when he partied
his brains out. Continued
losing it right through
middle finger.”
• From Not Sports Centre.com: “Congratulations
to the 2013-14 Los Angeles Lakers on their much
deserved Emmy win for
“Most Outstanding Comedy Series.”
• Greg Cote again: “The
arrival of Johnny Manziel
and return of (LeBron)
James have made it a
wonderful time to be a
sports fan in Cleveland. It
could only be better if
being a sports fan in
Cleveland did not entail
having to, you know, live
in Cleveland.”
• Another one from
Cote:
“Predictionmachine.com computers put
the Dolphins’ playoff
chances at 26.1 percent
and the shot at winning
Super Bowl at 0.4 per
cent. Shouldn’t there be a
law that you can’t rain on
a parade before the pa-
rade has even started?”
• Dwight Perry of the
Seattle Times: “The MGM
Grand’s legendary ‘Lion’s
Share’ slot machine finally coughed up its massive jackpot after 21 years
– to the tune of $2.4 million – at 1-in-20 million
odds. ‘So you’re telling me
there’s a chance,’ gushed
50,000 Cubs fans in unison.”
• Steve Schrader of the
Detroit Free Press, about
overweight
defensive
tackle Nick Fairly’s job
prospects with the Lions:
“You are what you eat.
Second helpings, second
string.”
• Comedian Argus
Hamilton, scoffing at the
NFL penalizing players
for smoking pot: “The only
way marijuana is a performance-enhancing drug
is if somebody puts a Hershey bar on the goal line.”
• Former PGA Tour
player Dan Halldorson on
how he lost 20 pounds
while teaching golf to juniors in China for three
months: “I was using two
sticks to eat instead of a
shovel.”

P.J. GILLEN NEWS
PJ Gillen is very excited to start a new school
year with many familiar
and new faces! Once
again the year ahead is
full of exciting events! We
have new events in store
for our PJ Gillen families
that we are sure the students will be excited for.
Keep your eyes open for
new sports events and
new clubs to join! The
staff have put their heads
together to help offer our
students a new variety of
things to do and be a part
of.
I’d like to remind everyone that PJ Gillen is a nut
free school. Please help us
to ensure that all of our
students are safe as some
of our students are safe as
some of our students have
severe allergies to nuts
and nut products.
We are excited to welcome to the PJ Gillen
staff Miss. Brittany Sykes
(KB), Miss. Kelsey Krahenbil (Grade 1A), Mrs.
Kristen Herperger (2A),
Miss Josey Rink (Library
/ Grade 5), Mrs. Terry
Tocker (Co-Teacher), Ms.
Alisa Hine (Educational
Assistant), Ms. Dawn
Schroeder (Educational
Assistant), Mrs. Pam Zimmer (Educational Assistant)
Mrs.
Lynette
Griffith (Library Technician / Educational Assistant). We would also like
to welcome Mrs. Annette
Stauch into the office as

Buses
The Town of Esterhazy
has amended a bylaw
that now moves our bus
loading zone to the east
side (St. Mary’s Street) of
our school. The bylaw also
prohibits the use of school
bus safety lights and stop
arms in the designated
school zone. Please be patient with us as we try to
ensure the safety of our
students as these changes
take place.
The Town of Esterhazy
has temporarily removed
the “No Parking on School
Days” sign on the south
side (4th Avenue). We will
be able to use both sides
of 4th Avenue for parking
to see if this helps with
congestion during drop off
and pick up times. We can
assure you that the main
priority of the PJ Gillen
staff is the safety of our
students and we will do
everything we can to
make this transition
smooth for our students
and families. The SCC is
working to support the
changes taking place in
regards to buses. If you
have any concerns that
you would like the SCC to
discuss please email them
to [email protected].
Supervision
Teachers begin supervision at 8:35 a.m. Please
try not to drop students
off prior to this time as
they will not have adult
supervision.
Lock Door Policy
All schools in the Good
Spirit School division are
governed by a safe school
policy. Starting this September, public access to
the school will be through
the main doors (office
doors). Please check in at
the office when you come
to school so we can help
you.
Response to
Intervention
As part of the Good
Spirit School Division’s
five year continuum plan,
PJ Gillen will be continuing to strengthen our students skills in a variety of
areas. In the spring, the
SCC approved removing
French from our daily
programs from grades
Kindergarten to 5. This
allows our homeroom
teachers to spend more
time in their classrooms
integrating
Language
Arts and Math skills into
all subject areas.
Attendance
The students work very
hard to come to school
every day with their
learning caps on their
heads. As a staff, we
would like to recognize
this. We will be recognizing those students with
perfect monthly attendance at our monthly assemblies. Those students
who have perfect attendance at the end of the
year will receive special
recognition at our June
assembly.
Report Card Pilot
PJ Gillen is one of 5
Good Spirit School Division schools that will be
piloting a division wide
report card. There are
many similarities from
our previous report card,
but you will notice some
differences. The school division will share information pertaining to the
report card in a variety of
ways over the next few
months.
Library News
Hello from the PJ
Gillen Library team! Mrs.
Griffith is the new Library Technician, and Ms.
Rink will be the Teacher
Librarian for the Year. We
are so excited for the new
school year! We will be
giving out “Eager Reader”
awards this year for those
students who read lots of
books and return them
back to the library on
time ……so start reading!
We will also have an author that we will showcase each month by
displaying a biography
and their books, among
other things. September’s
author is Robert Munsch.
If you have any used
books at home that are in
good condition, please feel
free to donate them to the
PJ Gillen library. We
would be happy to have
them! Next month we will
be having a book fair on
family fun night and more
details will be provided at
a later date. We are looking forward to a great
year!

Sept. 14, 2014
Terry Fox was diagnosed
with osteogenic sarcoma
(bone cancer) in his right leg
in 1977 and had his leg amputated 15 cm (six inches)
above the knee. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome
by the suffering of other cancer patients that he decided
to run across Canada to raise
money for cancer research.
He called his journey the
Marathon of Hope.
Terry's Marathon of Hope
took place in 1980 with the
simple objective of informing
Canadians of the importance
of finding a cure for cancer.
With fierce determination, he
ran an average of 42 kilometres (26 miles) every day for
143 days. Terry was forced to
end his run on September 1,
1980 when the cancer spread
to his lungs.
By February 1, 1981,
Terry's dream of raising $1
for every Canadian was realized - the Terry Fox
Marathon of Hope fund totaled $24.17 million. Terry
died in June 1981.
On May 26, 1988, The
Terry Fox Run became a
Trust, independent from the
Canadian Cancer Society,
and received tax-exempt
charitable registration as a
public foundation. In addition to our signature and
long-standing National Terry
Fox Run Day in September of
each year, The Terry Fox
Foundation is proud to include in its events portfolio
The National School Run
Day.
The Terry Fox Foundation
is responsible for supporting
close to $20 million in discovery based research each year
in Canada - all monies raised
outside Canada must be distributed to (a) an institute
approved by the Foundation
and its advisors or (b) remitted to Canada. The Terry Fox
Research Institute (TFRI) is
a recipient of TFF funding
for translational research.
TFRI is an exciting new initiative whose goal is to trans-
late rapidly today's best science into better cancer treatment and diagnosis for all
Canadians. The Institute will
bring scientists and clinicians together across the
country into a functionally
integrated, geographically
dispersed Institute with
nodes in several provinces.
The Foundation recognizes
the duality of its mandate.
Not only does it raise money
for research, but it also continues to share the story of
Terry Fox. The Terry Fox
Foundation strives to maintain the heroic effort and integrity that Terry embodied.
It is a grassroots organization that does not allow the
Terry Fox name or likeness
to be commercialized or conjoined with other worthy
causes.
To date, over $650 million
has been raised worldwide
for cancer research in Terry's
name.

Our hearts are filled
with memories,
We cherish each one
with care.
We know you had to
leave us,
But it still seems so
unfair.
One thing we have to
tell you,
Of which there is no
doubt;
You are wonderful to
remember,
And so hard to live without.
You’ve left behind our
broken hearts,
And precious memories
too.
But we never wanted
memories,
We only wanted you.
– Forever loved and sadly
missed by DeeDee, Hayden,
Rowan, George and Glenda

KURUCZ – In loving
memory of Anne Kurucz,
our Mom, Grandmother

who passed away on Sept.
19, 2013.
You can only have one
mother,
Patient, kind and true.
No other friend in all
the world,
Will ever be the same to
you.
When other friends for
sake you,
To your mother you will
turn.
For all her loving kindness,
She asks nothing in
return.
As we look upon her picture,
Sweet memories we
recall.
Of a face so full of sunshine,
And a smile for one and
all.
Sweet Jesus, take this
message,
To our dear mother up
above.
Tell her how we miss
her,
And give her all our
love.

remembered by Joanne, Germaine and Bernie and all
