SUPER SCOTT!
ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL SCOTT GREGORY
CLAIMED ONE OF THE BIGGEST TITLES IN
WORLD AMATEUR GOLF WHEN HE WON THE
121st AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP IN A CLOSELY
FOUGHT FINAL AT ROYAL PORTHCAWL.
The 21-year-old from Corhampton in Hampshire held off a strong challenge from
Scotland’s ROBERT MACINTYRE to seal a 2/1 victory in the 36-hole match.
Gregory’s triumph secures a place in The 145th Open at Royal Troon, next year’s US
Open at Erin Hills and, by tradition, an invitation to the Masters tournament in 2017.
He said afterwards: “Obviously it’s a dream come true, you dream about moments like
this when you are practising all those hours and when you’re not playing as well as
you’d like to.
“I think luck went my way a little bit, that definitely helped. I got a couple of lies where
I shouldn’t have had lies but I made the most out of the opportunities that I had.
“I kept telling myself if I got chances, I’ve got to take them because that’s what people
who win these championships do. They give themselves chances and when they get
them, they take them. I knew that putt on 17 was the moment I needed to make it, so it
was nice to do it.”
Looking ahead to The Open, Gregory went on: “It’s going to be completely new to me
so hopefully I can get some decent practice rounds in with some people and see where
I go from there.”

SCOTTISH TITLE
ENGLAND’S STEPHEN EAST WON THE SCOTTISH
SENIORS’ OPEN BY TWO SHOTS AFTER A
BLISTERING CHARGE IN THE LAST ROUND OVER
GLASGOW GOLF CLUB’S KILLERMONT COURSE.
The senior international from Moortown in Yorkshire was five-under par for his final 10
holes and sped past his rivals for the title, finishing the tournament on three-under.
East had been level par after 36-holes and two off the pace, but after eight holes of the
final round he had dropped two shots and fallen further back.
Young golfers should apply now for the
boys’ and girls’ U16 regional coaching
programme and the mixed U18 AASE

It could be the stepping stone to great things.
Masters champion DANNY WILLETT is among the
graduates of England regional training, as are three
members of the winning GB&I Curtis Cup team:
BRONTE LAW, MEGHAN MACLAREN and ALICE

Golfers who make successful initial applications will
be invited to one of the regional squad selection
weekends in September which will include skills
tests, player profiling and on-course ability
assessment.
Players selected for the squads will receive 20 days
of squad coaching and match days plus access to an
equivalent of 10 days of strength and conditioning
support with UKSCA accredited coaches.
However, a three-putt for bogey on eight stung him into action and he birdied 9, 11, 13, 15
and 17 for a closing 67. “It was nice to do that,” said East, whose win brought him his
first Scottish title.

GOLF
ENGLAND GOLF HAS NAMED JULY AS
FAMILY GOLF MONTH AND WILL LEAD A
DRIVE TO ATTRACT ALL THE GENERATIONS
TO GET INTO GOLF TOGETHER.
Clubs and driving ranges across the country are being invited to organise
open days to highlight golf as a great game that can involve all the family.
England Golf is offering marketing support and a new Family Guidance booklet,
which is packed with advice and ideas for events. It’s available to clubs at
www.englandgolf.org/clubhouse
The guide also quotes research which shows that playing with family members is
an ideal way for newcomers to get into the sport. Almost 50% of non-golfers say
they would be encouraged to play with friends and family; while almost 40% of
lapsed golfers say they would return to the game if more family and friends played.
What’s more almost 80% of men with a wife or partner say their companion
doesn’t play golf.
The Golf Foundation is supporting the drive with its HSBC Golf Roots Family Bag,
which contains kit to support fun activities for adults and juniors, golfers and
non-golfers. The kit bag is ideal for family open days and free bags are being sent
to 150 HSBC Golf Roots Centres which are keen to offer family activities.
“Golf really is the perfect game for families,” said Claire Hodgson, England Golf’s
Head of Participation. “Mums, dads, children and grandparents can all play
together and have a great time on the course and with the social life in the
clubhouse. It’s a really good way for all the generations to get together and

MINISTER DAVID EVENNETT – AND GOOD NEWS ABOUT PARTICIPATION
FIGURES.
The Minister backed the England Golf Partnership’s drive to grow golf and
emphasised the Government’s commitment to increase participation, when
he spoke at a reception in the Palace of Westminster, hosted by the All-Party
Parliamentary Golf Group.
He urged those present – Parliamentarians and key figures from the golf industry - to use
the game’s current high profile to showcase and promote the sport. “I do believe we
must do more to promote the game and to develop it further,” he said.
He went on: “Golf enjoys a high profile at the moment, following Danny Willett’s
brilliant success at the Masters and its inclusion in the Olympics later this summer.
It’s a great opportunity to highlight the sport and promote it to a worldwide audience
of millions,” he said. > Read more
The reception was followed by the release of the latest Active People Survey by
Sport England. Figures for the 12 months to March 2016 show that golf participation
is continuing to hold strongly, despite bad winter weather and flooding. There are
currently 738,200 people aged over 16 who play golf at least once a week. The report
highlights a period of stability which has now extended over the last three sets of results.

Earlier, England Golf’s latest County Impact Report showed that 192,000 people were
inspired to try golf in just one year. Of those who tried the sport, over 64,000 went on
to take structured coaching courses (up 17% on the previous 12 months); around
34,000 are now playing once a week, and almost 14,000 new club memberships have

34,000 are now playing once a week, and almost 14,000 new club memberships have
been reported (up 31%).

Scott Gregory

30 REGIONAL COACHING

THE WINTER MONTHS OF
2016/17.
EAST’S BLISTERING
CHARGE WINS
Young golfers should apply now for the
boys’ and girls’ U16 regional coaching
programme and the mixed U18 AASE
regional coaching squads.
It could be the stepping stone to great things.
Masters champion DANNY WILLETT is among the
graduates of England regional training, as are three
members of the winning GB&I Curtis Cup team:
BRONTE LAW, MEGHAN MACLAREN and ALICE
HEWSON.
Golfers who make successful initial applications will
be invited to one of the regional squad selection
weekends in September which will include skills
tests, player profiling and on-course ability
assessment.
Players selected for the squads will receive 20 days
of squad coaching and match days plus access to an
equivalent of 10 days of strength and conditioning
support with UKSCA accredited coaches.
However, a three-putt for bogey on eight stung him into action and he birdied 9, 11, 13, 15
and 17 for a closing 67. “It was nice to do that,” said East, whose win brought him his
first Scottish title.

FAMILIES ARE
URGED TO
GET INTO
“Mums, dads, children and grandparents can all play
together and have a great time on the course and with the social life in the
clubhouse. It’s a really good way for all the generations to get together and
enjoy each other’s company.”

It’s the second time Latham has won the title

He claimed his crown after a final round which
had everything: a first tee wobble, a dramatic
charge from a rival, birdies galore - and dogged
determination from the new champion.
At the end of it Latham, the general manager
at Woodhall Spa, was level par for the
championship, have withstood the challenge of
runner-up DAVID NIVEN (Newbury & Crookham),
who birdied three of his first five holes.

Geoffrey, who is 94, joined Eaton Golf Club, Norwich, in 1934 and had been a member
continuously for 82 years and 18 days when his record was certified. “I love Eaton,” he
said. “I love it as a club, it’s very friendly and I really have enjoyed my time there.”
He plays nine-holes three times a week and added: “It’s helped me a lot health-wise.
Without it I don’t think I would be here, I think it has kept me very fit.”
Geoffrey has had five holes in one during his golfing career, won a number of top club
competitions and once had a handicap of nine, which has now crept up to 16.
England Golf advocates the benefits of golf club membership and Richard Flint, the
Participation and Club Support Director, said: “This is great news and we’re delighted
to congratulate Geoffrey and wish him many more years of membership at Eaton.
“We work hard to promote club membership and all it offers and it’s wonderful to
hear of someone who has enjoyed the friendship and fitness benefits for so long.”
