Mental Health Crisis Information
A mental health crisis is defined as “self-harm, gravely disabled (unable to maintain
personal safety but not necessarily suicidal) or intent to harm others.”
If you find yourself dealing with a situation that meets this criteria involving a youth and
you do not feel you can safely transport the youth to a treatment facility for an evaluation
(such as St. Vincent’s Stress Center, Valle Vista, Community North Psychiatric Pavilion,
etc…), then you should contact the police or an ambulance service to transport.
If the situation involves an adult – contact law enforcement. If the criteria above is met, the
law enforcement officer can put an immediate detention order in place to insure the
person’s safety for 24 hours (see below).
Immediate Detention: A 24 hour hold and only requires a law enforcement officer – no judge or
doctor signature required.
Emergency detention is a 72 hour hold and requires a judge’s signature.
In any mental health crisis situation that occurs during the day, you can transport the
person (or call police if you cannot safely transport) directly to your local Community
Mental Health Centers (Cummins Behavioral Health Systems in Avon or Hamilton Center in
Plainfield) for a crisis assessment.
If an overdose or self harm involving bodily injury is ever present or suspected, you should
immediately call 911 as the person (child or adult) must be seen in an ER and cleared
medically first, prior to getting mental health treatment.
