Frilling, who entered the tournament as the overall No. 3 seed, matched up against Bianca Eichkorn of Miami (FL) in the opening round. The victory secures a spot in the singles draw at the National Individual Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. from Thurs.-Sun., Nov. 4-7. Frilling jumped out to an early lead in the match over No. 2 seeded Denise Muresan, staking to a 4-2 advantage in the first set and eventually finishing it off 6-2. She looked to close out the match with relative ease, leading in the second set 5-2, but Muresan battled back to take a 6-5 lead on serve. Frilling recovered from there though, posting a break of serve to square the set at 6-6 and taking the ensuing tiebreaker, 7-2, for the match and tournament title. Over the course of her five matches, Frilling did not drop a set and was pushed to only one tiebreaker - against Muresan. Frilling started the day with a quarterfinal match against Paloma Escobedo of Ohio State. She made quick work of her Buckeye opponent, knocking Escobedo off in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, for a berth in the semifinals and a meeting against the No. 3 seed Maria Mosolova of Northwestern. The two met twice last season, splitting the two decisions, and entered their match on Monday with neither having dropped a set through three matches apiece at the ITA Midwest Regional. Mosolova jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first set after breaking and holding to get play underway, but Frilling battled back to square the set at 3-3 and again at 4-4 before holding serve and breaking Mosolova to clinch the first set, 6-4. Frilling moved on with a convincing straight-sets victory over Northwestern's Belinda Niu (6-2, 63). She has not dropped a set through her first two matches in the draw and meets Paloma Escobedo of Ohio State in the quarters. Frilling and teammate Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) were unable to advance in doubles action, however. The tandem fell to Kelsey Haviland and Gabby Steele of Ohio State in the quarterfinals by a score of 8-6. Oct. 23, 2010 ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team advanced two doubles teams and four individuals on day three of action on Saturday at the 2010 ITA Midwest Regional at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor. Kristen Rafael (Grand Prairie, Texas) posted three wins on the day, picking up a doubles win along with a pair of singles victories. Rafael teamed with Britney Sanders (Ontario, Calif.) in the round of 16 to knock off Paloma Escobedo and Cami Hubbs of Ohio State, 8-6. The tandem meets Northwestern's team of Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton in the quarterfinals, after they defeated the No. 2 seeded team from Michigan of Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno, 8-6. No. 1 seeded Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Shannon Mathews rolled through their round of 16 matchup, defeating Kate Turvy and Belinda Niu of Northwestern, 8-2. Oct. 20, 2010 NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team is set to begin action at the ITA Midwest Regional on Thursday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The tournament, which will run from Thursday-Tuesday, will get underway with the singles qualifying draw. The Irish will see two of their team members begin their tournament on Thursday, as Julie Sabacinski (Plantation, Fla.) and JoHanna Manningham (Mishawaka, Ind.) compete in the qualifying bracket in search of a berth into the main draw. Sabacinski enters the draw as the qualifiers bracket No. 1 seed and receives a first-round bye. She faces the winner of the match between Jill Pastunink of Western Michigan and Kari Wig of Michigan in the round of 32. Manningham gets her tournament underway with a match against Alex Power of Cleveland State, which is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. With a win, she advances to take on Kara Cecil of Ohio State later in the day for a spot in the round of 16. The list of 48 qualifiers will get pared down to the final eight. Those eight members then enter into the singles main draw, which will begin play on Saturday and conclude on Tuesday, as 48 of the region's best compete for a berth to the ITA Indoor Singles/Doubles Championships, Nov. 4-7.
