Kristy Frilling Rolls On First Day Of USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship
Junior earned straight-sets victory over Bianca Eichkorn of Miami in opening round

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Notre Dame junior Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) continued her fall dominance
on Thursday, advancing at the women's tennis 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships
at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Frilling, who entered the tournament as the overall No. 3 seed, matched up against Bianca
Eichkorn of Miami (FL) in the opening round. After going back and forth for much of the opening
set, the Irish veteran pulled away and captured the first set, 6-4.
With one set in hand, Frilling made quick work of Eichkorn in the second set, capturing all six
games for her sixth-straight victory without dropping a set (6-4, 6-0) dating back to the opening
round of Midwest Regional.
Two rounds of singles play are slated to take place on Friday. Frilling advances to face Ariel Ellis
of Texas in the Round of 16, an opponent she beat at the Riviera/ITA All-American
Championships earlier this season, 6-3, 7-5 and would square off with the winner of Kristie Ahn
of Stanford and Sona Novakova of Baylor in the Quarterfinals with a victory.
Also, Friday signifies the kickoff of the Midwest Blast for the remainder of the Irish roster. Notre
Dame faces Memphis in doubles action at 9:00 a.m. (CT) before taking on Illinois in singles
action to close out day one at 6:00 p.m.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team returns to action Friday
at the Midwest Blast, hosted by the University of Illinois at the Atkins Tennis Center in
Champaign, Ill. Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio), meanwhile, departs for the USTA/ITA National
Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, which gets underway Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean
King National Tennis Center's Indoor Building in Flushing, N.Y.
Frilling enters the tournament fresh off earning automatic entrance into the field after capturing
the ITA Midwest Regional singles title with a straight-sets victory over Michigan's Denise
Muresan (6-2, 7-6 [7-2]) on Oct. 26. Over the span of her five regional matches, Frilling did not
drop a single set and was pushed to a tie-breaker only once - the final set of the championship
match.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships was inaugurated in 1978 for the
men and 1984 for the women. Past champions and finalists include current professionals
James Blake (Harvard), Bob and Mike Bryan (Stanford), Laura Granville (Stanford), John Isner
(Georgia) and Lisa Raymond (Florida). Big Ten Conference legends and Grand Slam finalists
Todd Martin (Northwestern) and MaliVai Washington (Michigan) are also among the notable
past champions.
The remainder of the Irish roster heads to the Midwest Blast to square off in matches against
the likes of Illinois, Oklahoma and Memphis. After taking a year off from the tournament, Notre
Dame returns for the fourth time in program history with all seven players expected to take to the
courts.

Kristy Frilling Wins Singles Title At ITA Midwest Regional
The junior completed the run without dropping a set over her five matches.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio), a junior on the Notre Dame women's tennis
team, completed her run to the title at the 2010 ITA Midwest Regional on Tuesday at the Varsity
Tennis Center in Ann Arbor. The victory secures a spot in the singles draw at the National
Individual Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. from Thurs.-Sun., Nov. 4-7.
Frilling jumped out to an early lead in the match over No. 2 seeded Denise Muresan, staking to
a 4-2 advantage in the first set and eventually finishing it off 6-2. She looked to close out the
match with relative ease, leading in the second set 5-2, but Muresan battled back to take a 6-5
lead on serve.
Frilling recovered from there though, posting a break of serve to square the set at 6-6 and taking
the ensuing tiebreaker, 7-2, for the match and tournament title.
Over the course of her five matches, Frilling did not drop a set and was pushed to only one
tiebreaker - against Muresan. She becomes the first Irish player to claim the Midwest Regional
title since Colleen Rielley claimed the top spot in '06.
The National Individual Championship gets underway on Thursday, Nov. 4 at the USTA-Billie
Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing N.Y.

Kristy Frilling Advances To Singles Final At ITA Midwest Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio), a junior on the Notre Dame women's tennis
team, advanced to the championship match of the singles draw on Monday at the 2010 ITA
Midwest Regional at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor.
Frilling started the day with a quarterfinal match against Paloma Escobedo of Ohio State. She
made quick work of her Buckeye opponent, knocking Escobedo off in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, for a
berth in the semifinals and a meeting against the No. 3 seed Maria Mosolova of Northwestern.
The two met twice last season, splitting the two decisions, and entered their match on Monday
with neither having dropped a set through three matches apiece at the ITA Midwest Regional.
Mosolova jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first set after breaking and holding to get play
underway, but Frilling battled back to square the set at 3-3 and again at 4-4 before holding serve
and breaking Mosolova to clinch the first set, 6-4. Frilling used that momentum throughout the
second set, losing only two games to complete another straight-sets victory (6-4, 6-2).
Frilling will meet Denise Muresan of Michigan in the championship match on Tuesday. The
tournament's No. 2 seed advanced with a straight-sets semifinal victory over Kate Turvy of
Nortwestern, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team concluded day four of
the 2010 ITA Midwest Regional on Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor with Kristy
Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) advancing into the quarterfinals of the singles draw.
Frilling moved on with a convincing straight-sets victory over Northwestern's Belinda Niu (6-2, 63). She has not dropped a set through her first two matches in the draw and meets Paloma
Escobedo of Ohio State in the quarters.
Frilling and teammate Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) were unable to advance in
doubles action, however. The tandem fell to Kelsey Haviland and Gabby Steele of Ohio State in
the quarterfinals by a score of 8-6.
Kristen Rafael (Grand Prairie, Texas) and Britney Sanders (Ontario, Calif.) also fell in
quarterfinal action, dropping an 8-6 decision to Northwestern's duo of Linda Abu Mushrefova
and Nida Hamilton.
In other Irish singles action Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa), Mathews and Rafael all fell
in the round of 16.
McGaffigan dropped a tough three-set decision to Mimi Nguyen of Michigan, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
Mathews fell to Northwestern's Brittany Wowchuk in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, while No. 2 seed
Denise Muresan was too much for Rafael, holding on for a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
Kristy Frilling is
advanced to the quarters
in the singles draw with a
straight-sets victory (62, 6-3) on Sunday.
Frilling returns to the court for the Irish on Monday for singles quarterfinal action, tentatively scheduled to get underway at
Noon (ET). With a victory she will compete in the first semifinal, which is slated to play at 3:00 p.m.

Irish Win Seven Matches On Day Three Of ITA Midwest Regionals
Two doubles teams and four individuals still alive in main draws.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team advanced two doubles
teams and four individuals on day three of action on Saturday at the 2010 ITA Midwest Regional
at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor. Kristen Rafael (Grand Prairie, Texas) posted three
wins on the day, picking up a doubles win along with a pair of singles victories.
Rafael teamed with Britney Sanders (Ontario, Calif.) in the round of 16 to knock off Paloma
Escobedo and Cami Hubbs of Ohio State, 8-6. The tandem meets Northwestern's team of Abu
Mushrefova and Hamilton in the quarterfinals, after they defeated the No. 2 seeded team from
Michigan of Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno, 8-6.
No. 1 seeded Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Shannon Mathews rolled through their round of
16 matchup, defeating Kate Turvy and Belinda Niu of Northwestern, 8-2. Kelsey Haviland and
Gabby Steele of Ohio State now await the Irish tandem in the quarterfinals after an 8-2 win over
Michigan's duo of Brooke Bolender and Mimi Nguyen.
In singles action, Rafael notched a pair of victories, starting with a win over Hubbs in the first
round. After dropping the first set (4-6), she recovered to win the final two sets with ease (6-1, 61) for the match victory. She then made short work of Selma Salkovic of DePaul in the second
round, winning in straight sets (7-6 (7-4), 6-0). A meeting with No. 2 seed Denise Muresan now
awaits Rafael in the round of 16.
Frilling, the No. 1 seed, advanced with a straight-sets decision over Stacey Lee of Northwestern,
6-1, 6-2 and will meet Niu in the round of 16.

The No. 4 seeded Mathews dispatched Northwestern's Elena Chernyakova (6-1, 6-1) and will
face Northwestern's Brittany Wowchuk in the third round.
Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa) made it another straight-sets victory for the Irish, knocking off Michelle Sulahian of
Michigan, 6-4, 6-2. She squares off with another Wolverine opponent in the third round in Mimi Nguyen.
Sanders was the lone singles loss on the day as she dropped a tough decision to Nicky Stracar of Wisconsin, 6-2, 6-1.
Sunday's action will feature quarterfinal and semifinal doubles action before switching over for the round of 16 in the singles
draw.

Irish Tennis Set To Begin Play At ITA Midwest Regional
Action gets underway Thursday with regional qualifying.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team is set to begin action at
the ITA Midwest Regional on Thursday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The
tournament, which will run from Thursday-Tuesday, will get underway with the singles qualifying
draw.
The Irish will see two of their team members begin their tournament on Thursday, as Julie
Sabacinski (Plantation, Fla.) and JoHanna Manningham (Mishawaka, Ind.) compete in the
qualifying bracket in search of a berth into the main draw.
Sabacinski enters the draw as the qualifiers bracket No. 1 seed and receives a first-round bye.
She faces the winner of the match between Jill Pastunink of Western Michigan and Kari Wig of
Michigan in the round of 32.
Manningham gets her tournament underway with a match against Alex Power of Cleveland
State, which is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. With a win, she advances to take on Kara
Cecil of Ohio State later in the day for a spot in the round of 16.
The list of 48 qualifiers will get pared down to the final eight. Those eight members then enter
into the singles main draw, which will begin play on Saturday and conclude on Tuesday, as 48
of the region's best compete for a berth to the ITA Indoor Singles/Doubles Championships, Nov.
4-7.
Doubles play, which will get underway on Friday with two rounds of play, consists of a 48-team
main draw. The championship match is scheduled to take place on Monday.

Illinois, IPFW, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Toledo, Western Michigan, Wisconsin and
Youngstown State.
