1989. He lost his first bid for public office, a U.S. Senate campaign in 1992. But Clinton’s presidential victory that November
gave Huckabee a break: Then-Lt. Gov. Jim Guy Tucker became
governor when Clinton moved to the White House and Huckabee won a special election for the No. 2 post. Three years later,
he ascended to the governor’s office when Tucker was convicted
on corruption charges. Huckabee won two full terms, serving
10½ years and a stint as National Governors Association chairman. Since 2008, Huckabee has released multiple books and
hosted a Fox News TV show. He still hosts “The Huckabee
Report” on ABC Radio.
PERSONAL STORY: Huckabee’s multifaceted public life was
forged in a small-town, working-class household. His mother
was an office clerk, his father a firefighter and mechanic; both
were old-guard Southern Democrats. A young Michael Dale
Huckabee found solace in church, learning to play the guitar at
age 11 and delivering his first sermon a few years later. At 14,
he landed a job reading the news and weather for a local radio
station. He was the first male in his family to graduate from
high school. Huckabee holds a bachelor’s degree in religion and
attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Texas,
but did not finish. Huckabee and his wife, Janet, married in
1974. They have three adult children and four grandchildren.
Huckabee shed more than 100 pounds on a progression from
obesity to marathon-running fitness, and wrote “Quit Digging
Your Grave with a Knife and Fork” in 2005. But he’s struggled
to keep the weight off.

Exports have been hurt by an increase in the value of the dollar against other major currencies over the past year. A strong
dollar makes U.S. products more expensive overseas while
lowering the price of imported products and making them more
competitive in the U.S. market.
Rum

“I’m not inclined to keep giving out dollars to import whiskey
at this volume,” the late President Hugo Chavez said in 2007.
“What revolution is this? The whiskey revolution?”
But an economic collapse has produced a rum revival.
A plunge in crude prices has battered Venezuelans’ oildependent economy and sharply lowered export revenues. The
government has tightened rigid currency controls and restricted
spending on imports to high-priority goods such as food and
medicine.
With inflation running above 60 percent, Venezuelans’
money no longer goes as far, putting whiskey beyond reach for
many. A bottle of Chivas Regal 18 Year Old Whiskey costs $31,
calculated at the black-market exchange rate, more than Venezuela’s monthly minimum wage.
Such economic downturns often have prompted a boost in
domestic spirits, according to Nestor Ortega, master distiller at
Santa Teresa, one of the country’s premier rum makers.
Besides oil, rum is one of the few exports for which the country is steadily building an overseas reputation.
Key to its success are stringent laws that demand rum be aged
for at least two years. And unlike more arid sugar-growing parts
of the Caribbean, local rum makers say the fertile soil and cooler
climate in the best rum-growing area outside Caracas lends Venezuelan rum a rounder, more flavorful aroma.
At Hacienda Santa Teresa, Beatriz Zambrano leans over a
control panel straight out of a sci-fi movie and monitors a collection of pumps, stills and boilers. From here she can see the
entire distilling process, from the temperature at which molasses
from a nearby sugar mill is fermented, to the rum’s traditional
aging process in white oak barrels previously used to store sherry
from Spain.

cago, the foundation seemed to pine for New York. Most of the
top tier honors went to restaurants and chefs in the Big Apple.
Outstanding chef went to Michael Anthony of Gramercy Tavern; Christina Tosi of Momofuku took outstanding pastry chef;
and best new restaurant was Markus Glocker’s Batard.
Like Barber, Anthony has been praised for a fierce dedication to serving seasonal foods. In fact, he worked at Blue Hill
at Stone Barns until moving to Gramercy Tavern in 2006. Two
years later, the restaurant — which opened in 1994 — won the
foundation’s top restaurant award.
Among the outliers from the New York crowd was Chicago restaurateur Donnie Madia, owner of One Off Hospitality
Group, the force behind many of the city’s top restaurants,
including Blackbird, avec, The Publican, The Violet Hour, Publican Quality Meats and Nico Osteria. He won top restaurateur.
Jessica Largey of Manresa in Los Gatos, California, won rising
star chef of the year.
