It was a hot summer day.
Amari and her brother Leo were
playing soccer. Amari kicked
the soccer ball and watched it
sail right into a treetop!
“It’s too high to reach,”
said Leo. “We’ll have to buy a
new ball.”

They went home and counted
their money.
“We can’t even buy a tennis
ball with this!” said Leo.
“I know a great way to make
some money!” Amari said. “A
lemonade stand!”
“We could set it up at the
playground!” cried Leo.

“Great idea,” said Amari. “Lots
of hot, thirsty kids will come over
to buy our cool drinks.”
“Okay, what are we waiting
for?” said Leo.

Amari and Leo took money
from their piggy banks and went
to the store with their father.
They bought sugar and lots
of lemons. They bought ice,
too. Then they raced back to
their house before the ice had a
chance to melt.

First, Amari and Leo made a
sign for their lemonade stand.
Next, they began to make a
batch of lemonade. Their father
cut the lemons in half, and
Amari squeezed them again and
again to get out every drop of
juice. The boys mixed all the
ingredients together in a pitcher.

They walked along a path to
the playground and set up their
lemonade stand. It didn’t take
long before a boy came over to
buy some lemonade. He frowned.
“Yuck! This lemonade is sour!”
exclaimed the boy.

Amari and Leo gave the boy
his money back. Then they went
home to fix their lemonade.
They added sugar. But then
the lemonade was too sweet.
They added more lemon. But
nothing seemed to make the
lemonade taste just right.

“I know something we can do!”
cried Amari. “When Grandma
bakes her special lemon cake,
she adds bits of lemon peel to it.
Let’s do that to our lemonade.”
They asked their father to
help them shave the lemon peel
and add it to the lemonade.
“Yum! I could drink this all
day,” said Leo.

Everyone else felt the same
way. Leo and Amari sold their
lemonade as fast as they could
make it. In less than a week,
they had enough money to buy
a new soccer ball. In fact, they
bought two! After all, Amari
was a powerful kicker.
