Workshop Series

The workshop series cover the topics

The YMCA's Diabetes prevention Program is a
year-long program that meets weekly for the
first 4 months, then once a month for the
following 8 months. The program has been
proved to reduce new cases of type 2 diabetes by
58% overall, and 70% in adults over age 60.
The program aims to reduce weight by at least 7%
and gradually increase physical activity by 150
minutes per week.
The program is currently enrolling at Charles
River,
Dorchester, East Boston, Huntington Ave,

Month!
We all have so many female heroes in our life. Whether it is the person who raised us,
the person who taught us, or the person who set the stage for our future. Here are a
few women in history who empower us to do great things!
Famous Firsts by women
1587 - Virginia Date starts us off by being the first person born in America to English Parents
1849 - Skipping ahead a few years, Elizabeth Blackwell receives her M.D. becoming the first
women in the US with a medical degree
1864 - A few years later, Rebecca Lee Crumpler becomes the first black woman to receive a
medical degree.
1872 - Victoria claflin Woodhull is nominated by the National Radical Reformers, making her
the first female presidential candidate in the US
1916 - Jeannette Rankin of Montana is the first woman to be elected to the US House of
Representatives
1921 - American Novelist Edith Wharton becomes the first woman to win a Pulitzer prize for
fiction novel "The Age of Innocence".
1932 - Hattie Wyatt Caraway of Arkansas becomes the first woman elected to the US Senate
1933 - Frances Perkins is appointed secretary of labor by President Franklin D. Roosevelt,
making her the first female member of a presidential cabinet
1934 - The Coca-Cola company appoints Lettie Pate Whitehead as their director; the first
woman to serve as director of a major corporation!
1946- Edith Houghton Becomes the first woman hired as a first major-league baseball scout
1964 - Margaret Chase Smith becomes the first woman nominated for president of the US by
a major political party at the Republican National Convention
1967 - Althea Gibson is the first African-American player to win a singles title at wimbledon
1983 - NASA sends Dr. Sally K. Ride to space, the first American woman in history to go to
space
2000 - Hillary Clinton is elected to the US Senate, becoming the first First Lady ever elected
to national office
2005 - Condoleeza Rice becomes the first African-American female secretary of state
2015 - In July, the Arizona Cardinals hire Jennifer Welter as an assistant coaching intern for
the team's training camp and preseason. She is the first female coach in the NFL.
