The Bedford Borough Council Sports Development
Unit is offering a new and improved summer
activity package. We hope you enjoy a fun
packed summer with our Summer Sports Courses.
The Summer Sports Courses offer a range of different courses for both
complete beginners or for those who have had some previous experience
(except Rowing for Beginners where you must be a complete beginner).
The provision of equipment is included within the cost and instructors are
all experienced, qualified through their National Governing Body and have
an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
The age range of some courses may vary, so please check each
course before booking a place. Each course has a unique course code
underneath it so be ready to quote this or write it on your booking form.
How to Book
Once you have decided which course(s) you would like to attend it is easy
to book just pick one of the simple methods below:
Call 01234 718838 and pay over the phone with a debit/credit card. All
details will be taken so no need to fill out a booking form.
Complete the booking form at the back of this leaflet or download a form
from www.bedford.gov.uk/sport and return it, by post to: Summer
Sports Courses, Sports Development Unit, Bedford Borough Council,
Borough Hall, Cauldwell Street, Bedford, MK42 9AP. Please enclose
full payment for all courses, cash or cheque (cheques made payable to
Bedford Borough Council).
Go to www.bedford.gov.uk/sport and complete the online form which
will be emailed directly to us. If completing the online form then please
call us ASAP to make your payment, please note that your place is not
confirmed until payment has been received.

Visit Bedford Central Library (Monday to Friday, please note that Bedford
Central Library closes at 1pm on Thursdays) and hand in your booking
form and payment (ask if a member of Sports Development staff is
available to take the booking in person).
Confirmation of your booking will normally be sent by email, but can
be posted out if preferred.
If the course you would like to book is full, we will contact you with
suggestions for other courses. If we cannot accommodate you, we will
return your payment in full.
Parent or Guardian
Consent will be required before any child can attend a Summer Sports
Course. A paragraph of consent will be posted/emailed over to you for
you to complete and post/email back to us. Please note that your child/
children cannot attend the course until we have received this consent.
Course Arrangements
Some of the courses have been arranged so that bookings can be made
for morning and afternoon activities at the same venue. We are therefore
able to offer a full day of activity, and participants are welcome to stay
at the venues from 12.30pm to 1.30pm to eat their packed lunch (not
provided).
There will be a member of staff/instructor on site at all times, but they
will not be able to prevent the children leaving the site. All of the morning
courses at Priory Water Sports Centre, Kempston Outdoor Centre,
Mowsbury Golf Course and Star Rowing Club will be open from 9am to
allow parents to drop participants off in advance of the courses’ starting
time of 9.30am. Courses at these venues that finish at 4.30pm will also
provide supervision of participants until no later than 5pm.

Archery
Venue: Kempston Outdoor Centre, Hillgrounds Road
A very different activity to those listed
below, but just as rewarding and enjoyable.
A quieter approach is needed as well as
the ability to concentrate and focus as
you are progressively taken through the
required skills and procedures in order to
successfully shoot at and hit the targets,
aiming as always for the elusive bulls-eye.
BikeAbility
Venue 1: Beauchamp Middle School, Hawk Drive
Venue 2: Newnham Middle School, Polhill Avenue
This Level 2 course comprises of practical and theory sessions over four
half-days. Candidates will be able to cycle more safely on the road and
gain awareness of other road users. This course is designed for both
beginners and more experienced cyclists alike. Visit: www.bikeability.org.uk

Cricket
Venue: Bedford College, Cauldwell Street
A fun and exciting chance to introduce the game of cricket and develop
your skills throughout the week. Batting, bowling, and fielding drills all in a
fun format with lots of games to encourage people to take part in the sport
and improve on their skills no matter what previous experience they have.
This indoor course will be lots of fun whilst providing a great chance to
learn the sport in a practical learning environment as well as developing
fundamental skills through cricket.

Football
Venue: Mowsbury Park, Bedford
The football skills sessions are structured in a way to make it accessible
to as many children as possible without being too serious about the game
element of winning. No matter where you come from or what you believe,
whether this is your first step in to football, or an opportunity to add to
your growing football experience. These fun sessions can support and
challenge any 6 - 11 year old who wants to be involved.
Golf
Venue: Mowsbury Golf and Squash Complex, Cleat Hill
You will learn a wide range of skills from a basic chip to a drive and learn
how to hold the club correctly. Competitions will run daily with prizes, so
whether you think you can be the next Pro Golfer or just want to have fun,
let’s get you started!

Holiday Adventure

kayaking, canoeing to indoor
climbing, abseiling or scaling our
high ropes course. New activities

Multi-Sports
Venue: Bedford College, Cauldwell Street
Fun and enjoyable multi-sport / activity sessions are being delivered to
develop the fundamental skills of agility, balance and coordination. These
skills enable the children to be successful in whatever sport they choose
to pursue, sports like Dodgeball, Handball, Short Tennis and Indoor
Athletics are all linked to development of these skills and to develop their
sport specific playing ability.
Paddle Sport
Venue: Priory Water Sports Centre
Learn to paddle in the open water at Priory Country Park. No experience
necessary but the ability to swim would be an advantage. The course
will take the participant from a beginner to a more competent paddler in
kayak and canoe.

River Runners
Venue: Kempston Outdoor Centre, Hillgrounds Road
Based on the river next to the centre you will get to experience
kayaking and canoeing from on, and typically in the water! Our qualified
coaches are keen to pass on the skills to you following a centre
devised programme, so as well as having a great time you will learn
how to manoeuvre your boat, what to do if you capsize and could even
undertake an exploratory journey! You will need lots of enthusiasm and
be prepared to get wet.
Rock Stars
Venue: Kempston Outdoor Centre, Hillgrounds Road
Our indoor and outdoor walls
will provide the ideal venue to
get you climbing. Based on
our vibrant and ever popular
climbing clubs, our instructors
will introduce you to the
vertical world of climbing in
a fun and challenging way.
If climbing through hoops,
without hands, as quietly
as you can, and maybe
even blindfolded appeals or
you want to climb a mighty
mountain one day, then Rock
Stars is your starting point.
Please note that this course
does not include the high
ropes course.

Rowing
Venue: Bedford Rowing Club, Duck Mill Lane
Did you watch the Olympics and were inspired by the success of our
rowers? This Course could be the answer you’ve been looking for; so why
not give it a try? You don’t need to have any previous rowing experience,
although if you have it will not stop you from joining in, and you will be
taught the necessary safety techniques as well as all the basic rowing
skills to build confidence in a boat. By the end of the week the aim will be
to get you rowing individually and in a crew – ready to join a local rowing
club if you wish to continue.
Rowing for Beginners
Venue: Star Rowing Club, Commercial Road
Receive professional coaching in the basic sculling technique on both the
indoor rower and in sculling boats. You may have the chance to progress
to crew sculling with possible racing at the end of the week. Enjoy your
time in the friendly atmosphere of the club house. Please note that this
course is for complete beginners only and participants must be able to
swim 100m in clothes.

Sailing
Venue: Priory Water Sports Centre
Learn to sail in a topper-class boat. Gain first-hand sailing experience with
the possibility of gaining a Royal Yatching Association Youth Scheme
Stage 1 or Stage 2 award certificate in association with Priory Sailing Club.
Sailing 2+
Venue: Priory Water Sports Centre
For those more experienced sailors who have already achieved their
Stage 1 award and have a Log Book. This course is run in association
with Priory Sailing Club.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Venue: Priory Water Sports Centre
Stand up paddle boarding is one of the fastest growing water sports in
the world. Priory Water Sports are one of the first centres in Bedfordshire
to teach stand up paddle boarding. Bedford is one of the best locations
to discover this new exhilarating experience. Stand up paddle surfing is
just a small discipline of the sport with the fastest growing areas being
on lakes, estuaries and rivers with individuals paddling recreationally,
downwind or racing.

Street Dance
Venue: Bunyan Sports Centre, Mile Road
This Street Dance course is for all abilities aged 6 to 15 years. The
course will enable you to learn some awesome routines and moves! You
will have the chance to choreograph a routine as a group to perform at
the end of the week and show all the great poppin’ and locking moves
you have learnt. Come along and have some fun!
Summer Sports Zone
Venue: Bunyan Sports Centre, Mile Road
Summer Sports Zone provides an opportunity to take part in sports for
young people between the ages of 6 – 15 years old who have learning
or physical disability (and their siblings). The sessions consist of a multisports programme with a variety of local coaches delivering the sessions
along with our qualified staff to provide a fun and enjoyable experience
for all. The sessions also give the young people a chance to develop new
and improve existing skills whilst experiencing new activities. Siblings are
welcome to come along and join in too – but will also need to book on to
the course.

Tennis
Venue: Mowsbury Park Tennis Courts
Are you the next Andy Murray or Maria Sharapova? This course gives
you the chance to work with local qualified coaches from Riverside Tennis
club at one of their satellite venues. The sessions cover all aspects of the
game from basic technique to match tactics, singles and doubles. We
teach all the different swing patterns, grips and court positions which are
involved in tennis, but most importantly we have FUN!!
Wet’n’Wild (Multi-Activity)
Venue: Priory Water Sports Centre
Want to try a bit of everything... why not try our multi-activity week?
Activities include Canoeing; Sailing; Raft Building; Problem Solving &
Adventure!

Wilderness School
Venue: Kempston Outdoor Centre, Hillgrounds Road
If you want to become the next Bear Grylls or Ray Mears, this course
is for you! The wilderness school shows you how to make fire using
traditional methods, how to build different shelters from natural materials,
and even more. We use Canoes to explore the local environment & show
you the use for nature we have right here in Bedfordshire.
It’s gonna be wild!
Windsurfing
Venue: Priory Water Sports Centre
The RYA Youth Scheme at Priory SC is an easy and accessible way to
progress in this exciting sport. From your first taster you’ll be hooked and
in no time will be blasting across the water. Using equipment, specifically
designed for young people you will be quickly up and sailing under the
guidance of your instructor.
X-treme Climb
Venue: Kempston Outdoor Centre, Hillgrounds Road
Using our high ropes course Xtreme
climb will get you scaling various
challenges high above the ground.
You will find yourself jumping for
the trapeze bar, tip toeing along
the balance beams or building
an increasingly wobbly crate
stack. A head for heights and an
adventurous spirit is all you need!
Please note this course does not
include the indoor climbing wall.
