Cold Creek Nurseries Newsletter August 2013 ~ Join Us For A Fall Crop Seminar ~ Did you know that you can extend the vegetable growing season by planting a fall vegetable garden around the middle of August? Many short season vegetables such as green beans, sugar snap peas and tomatoes will "make" before the first frost around Halloween. Our seminar on Saturday, August 10th, at 9:30 a.m. will cover plant selection, soil preparation, planting techniques, fertilization and harvesting. Many of the seeds, plants and containers needed for fall crops will be available at Cold Creek. Handouts and refreshments will also be available. Two of our staff, Annette and Alan, will be the presenters. Come discover the fun and good food you can enjoy with a fall vegetable garden! ~ Fruit Trees Now On Sale ~ We currently have our fruit trees at 25% off. Take advantage of this sale, and plant some fruit trees. Grow delicious, healthy fruits right in your own backyard! ~ Fairy Garden Fun ~ Miniature, or "Fairy", gardening is one of the newest and most creative gardening trends! This past weekend, Cold Creek Nurseries held our very first 'make and take' miniature gardening workshop. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with 29 people joining us to create magical miniature gardens. The participants loved making these miniature container gardens and we loved seeing the magic of their gardens come to life! Because we had such a great response to our first workshop, we have scheduled another one, to be held on August 24. If you haven't seen our display of miniature, or "Fairy", gardens in our retail greenhouse, stop in, because you'll be enchanted! ~ Invicibelle Spirit Hydrangea ~ This is the beautiful hydrangea from which $1 of each sale goes to the American Cancer Society, for breast cancer awareness. When you purchase one of these hydrangeas, you can get a FREE "Steppable." These are cute, very low growing plants that you can use for a ground cover. They stand up well to foot traffic, hence the name "Steppables." Annette's Corner Summertime in the South is just full of characteristics that either make me crazy or make me so happy. Let's start with crazy, shall we? The mosquitoes drive me BERZERK. They love me, and are particularly abundant this year because of the rain. I put on full body armor to walk the "Precious Puppy" (my little boy), Cooper. I venture forth decked out in a long sleeved shirt with a hood, long pants, and socks, trying to cover any part of me where the little blood suckers might get to me. Cooper looks like a Dalmation instead of a yellow lab because they cover him when we walk. The "no see ums" are also a summer entity. Another thing that makes me crazy, and goes back to last week's email where Tom wrote that I am always cold, is the fact that everywhere you go grocery, restaurants etc. - it's always FREEZING to me. My husband carries around jackets for me in his car, because he knows that I will freeze in the car and then freeze some more where ever we go out to eat. Now, things that make me happy in the summer mostly have to do with food. Tomato sandwiches, watermelons, cantaloupes, peaches (and home made peach ice cream!) and fresh cucumbers with vinegar and salt - those are all happy summer things! I also love the long hours of daylight, and I love hot weather. My trip to Edisto each August with my family is the icing on the cake. A reminder - be sure and catch my seminar next week on "Fall Veggie Gardening", and bring your four legged friend in for the SPCA DOG WASH.
