The La Honda Voice The Face of Local Music - Cuesta La Honda Guild by craig eddy July 2013 And a reminder for the July 4th picnic by Dave Strohm submitted by Sally Bachman: “Three-legged races, Watermelon. Neighbors, Kids, Camel-Jumping, Trees, Music, Tug of Wars, Stories, The Creek, Tricycle Races, OldTimers, Babies, Money Scrambles, More stories. The Fourth of July in La Honda has it all – and then some. Noon until 6 pm. Thursday, July 4th La Honda Playbowl (continued on page 2) Jamming at the Playbowl Every now and then I like to write a bit about organizations in the La Honda area that help promote local music. As it is time for the annual Cuesta La Honda July 4th Picnic, I would like to thank the Cuesta Board for putting together their July 4th event at Playbowl, as well as allowing the Jamfest at Playbowl in October. Once again, local events are so full of good vibes and community involvement that local musicians are happy to be involved for the causes even though no one gets paid to play. If you haven't been to the July 4th event yet, give it a try! (continued on page 3) Swing Trail Hike weather - drippy overcast by Denis Shaw [Note: Denis Shaw has agreed to write a series of articles of hiking in and around La Honda for the La Honda Voice. Last month’s article was the first of the series] Annual July 4th Guild Picnic Help is still needed for the annual July 4th picnic. Volunteers are needed to help set up, paint faces, wield the giant tug-o-war rope, and much more! Please email Sally at [email protected] Walking around La Honda is an exercise in itself. Descending from Woodland Vista down to the post office can be fun and easy, but returning back uphill to Woodland Vista can be an energetic climb similar to an hour at the gym. The Swing Trail provides a less energetic solution, though it may take you a bit longer. Many people use this route to jog, walk their dog, ride their bike or horse, or hike for the sights, like I do. (continued on page 2) Previous July 4th picnic at Playbowl Photo from Sally Bachman 1 Swing Trail Hike (continued from page 1) It may take 45 minutes to an hour to make the ascent to Woodland Vista Drive, but at an easier pace. Starting at Reflection Lake, take time to observe the sights and sounds of birds and frogs before you begin the steep climb up Laguna Drive. This is the hardest part of the route. The view of Mt. Baldy and the winery on the skyline are spectacular from this point. Early morning hikes will see the clouds parting high in the hills like magic. One of their delights, and mine too, the Thimbleberry, Rubus parviflorus, is beginning to ripen. Along the trail, there is a long stretch of these plants, with their large rounded, mapleshaped leaves that disappear come fall and winter, the plants becoming just bare sticks. More than half way back the upper Swing Trail, you pass a giant Big Leaf Maple tree, Acer macrophyllum, which will later brighten up the path with its bright yellow leaves above you and below under your feet. These leaves dry well, and are sturdy enough to make marvelous Christmas wreaths that last multiple years. If you are lucky to be alone, walking quietly, the bird songs are numerous. I don’t know many bird calls, but I do know Quail’s. I regularly see and hear them at the end of the trail where the path meets the gravel at the end of Woodland Vista. The view from this point is breathtaking, you can see miles into La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve. Following the road, you will eventually hit pavement again. Now returning to Reflection Lake is simple enough, it is all downhill. Whether you take the paved roads, or skirt Whitney’s Ranch to connect with Fernwood Drive, or take the newer Fernwood Trail that takes you first to Recreation Drive...it is generally only 15 minutes. It is a healthy hike! Do it for mental, as well as physical, health! La Honda Thimbleberries Walking along Laguna Drive, it is a short 15 minutes before you will leave the pavement at the entrance gate to the beginning of the Swing Trail. This trail was to be a road way, and is very solid, excellent for horses. So just a reminder, watch for “horse nuggets”. Avoid any poison oak you might see on the hillsides, too. It is already beginning its seasonal signal by turning various shades of red. In the spring, late April and May, the trail is studded with clumps of blooming Douglas Iris, in shades of blue and purple. As we begin the summer season, the main attraction is Cream Bush, Holodiscus discolor, with its soft, dainty, creamy white flowers in dangling clusters. But your nose alerts you to the fragrance of the pinkish white columns of flowers belonging to the California Buckeye, Aesculus californicus. In full bloom now, it is intoxicating, but in a short time its leaves will turn brown and drop, as the horse chestnuts begin to form, some hanging like Christmas ornaments into fall. After the elbow turn at the far reaches of the Swing Trail, you will head back parallel to the lower Swing Trail, while gradually heading higher. Everything to your left from this point is open space for deer and other wild life. I often see deer, depending on the season. but this time of year, they are more interested in the candy stores found in many a La Honda back yard. Annual July 4th Guild Picnic (continued from page 1) “… A smorgasbord of local delicacies will be served at approximately 1:30. Barbecued chicken, veggie burgers and hot dogs will be provided. If your last name begins with the letters A-M, please bring a salad or side dish; N-Y, please bring a dessert. If your name starts with Z, please bring Chuckles, Ju-Ju-Bees or Lik-M-Aid… Games will begin promptly at 3. (Or, in that vicinity). This year we are excited to announce an Old Guys Race. It’s not too late to begin training! Lavish prizes for winners of the contests. Among them, a hair-raising drive down 84 from Alice’s…a special Tweet handle to follow Liam Hussey and David Bartz as they fight for justice and the American Way . Those wishing, instead, to get their picture taken and receive a cheap “bragging rights” card may still do so.” La Honda Flea Market on July 14th, 10am-4pm Space fees go directly to the La Honda Fire Brigade. The volunteer firefighters will be hosting a BBQ the same day. 2 a magic there, that isn't found in very many places. Thank you Charlie for letting us use it once again. The Face of Local Music - Cuesta La Honda Guild (continued from page 1) Each year starting around noon there is music, food and traditional July 4th type games for everyone. Want to strut around town for a few weeks? Win the egg toss or water balloon toss. You will be a superstar for at least as long as the picnic lasts. Games usually get going around 2pm. Once the games end the music will start up again and play until the musicians get tired of playing. We will probably end around 6ish. The picnic is a pot luck with the BBQ meats supplied. Bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to put out. I am in negotiations to bring in special musical guests but may not know myself who the special guests will be until the day of. Bring your instrument and you just might get elected the 'special guest'. The kids will certainly have a blast with the sack races, tug of war, and balloon stomp. Seems the adults sometimes get a little more amped up than the kids. The picnic only works because of all the volunteers so be sure to thank them for all their hard work setting up and preparing food and tearing it all down again. Come on down on the 4th and enjoy yet another reason small town is so fun. It all ends early enough to head out and catch you favorite fireworks shows. See ya at the Playbowl!! Also I want to thank the Town of La Honda for showing up, supporting the event by first of all, participating in the parade, hanging out enjoying the music and buying raffle tickets. I love living here, you're all a bunch of great neighbors! I so appreciate the support by Craig Eddy, Jeff Ring, and Bo Putnam for the awesome music. A huge thank you goes out to all the musicians who played and donated your time and talents. Without the music, we're just another street fair. You guys & gals are the best. Thanks you Dan Newitt for the great poster & tshirt designs, they were a big hit and thank you Mike Pisani for once again donating the printing of the posters for us. And thank you so much Kristen Lindstrom and Lynn Pimentel for organizing La Honda Elementary School's participation. The addition of the parade and pancake breakfast brought the town together on a whole new level. I want to also thank Linda Bennet with the Fire Brigade and Glen with La Honda Country Market for joining La Honda Elementary in creating a food court, to keep us all fed & going all weekend. La Honda Fair Thanks! (excerpt from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ LaHonda/message/36499 by Paula Dennis) Thank you to our excellent vendors, your contributions to the Raffle, made it one of the best yet! And more than anything, I want to thank my husband Reid Dennis and son Colin for supporting me in so many ways, leading up to and during the Fair. YOUR FAVORITE WIFE, VICKI 7.1.84 “I know it's been a few days since the Fair and the afterglow is starting to fade, but I just want to say... What a Great Fair!! And I have a number of people to thank for that. First of all, it wouldn't have the wonderful atmosphere if it weren't for Charlie Catania donating the use of La Honda Gardens. Jeanie Graham and Bruce Krempetz, along with brother Ryan, who was away in the U.S. military, became his legal guardians, enabling David to stay in La Honda to complete high school. David has since been busy performing in local productions (Coastal Repertory Theatre, Half Moon Bay Shakespeare, and The Great Dickens Faire), working, and taking general education classes at CSM and Cañada College. He has been accepted to the acting program at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, and his foster moms (that’s us) with the support of his foster dads (Kevin Graham and Bruce Krempetz) and his foster siblings are producing this project to benefit his college fund and to give the community a chance to launch him into his acting career. All proceeds will benefit the David Rock Scholarship Fund. Suggested donation $10/adult, $5 youth, or as much or as little as you would like to contribute. Some of you may remember this comedy, performed 4 years ago to benefit the Pescadero High School Viking Boosters Drama Club. Because David is now trying to earn tuition money (and because it’s so fun), we are doing it again with the same three performers (Caroline Graham, Thomas Krempetz and David Rock), who are now college students, and the same director (Bruce Krempetz). It is a funny, vulgar, gruesome, bawdy (and sometimes all of those together) presentation of, you guessed it, all of Shakespeare’s works in about 2 hours. The Reduced Shakespeare Company first performed this hilarious show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1987, and it has since been produced all over the world. Thomas Krempetz, Caroline Graha and David Rock Caroline Graham, a 2011 graduate of Pescadero High School, is a junior studying theater at the University of New Mexico, where she has been acting, writing plays, and working as a scenic carpenter in UNM’s Theater Department, as an artists’ model, and as a summer intern for a professional theatre company. Thomas Krempetz, a 2010 graduate of Pescadero High School, also a junior, studies Interior Architecture at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where he also works as a clothed figure model. The fine print: Parental discretion is advised (Shakespeare was not exactly Mr. Rogers…). Please bring lawn chairs (low back is preferred, unless you want to end up in the back row), blankets, hats and sunscreen. NO ALCOHOL David Rock was raised in La Honda along with his half-brother, Ryan Murdoch, by his mother, Elaine Rock Franklin. Many of you knew Elaine (who owned and ran Canyon Video in La 4 AND NO DOGS, PLEASE. Refreshments sales will also benefit David’s college fund. Donations are not tax-deductible. Deanna Anderson There will be another chance to see the show on July 27th at Carter Park in Half Moon Bay (behind Stone Pine Center) at 3:30 pm as part of The Half Moon Bay Shakespeare Company's "Bring Back Carter Park" event. Stafford Douglas from the University of New Mexico acting program will be joining the cast for that event. Deanna's physical acting and dialog stays true to the classic, old time style of this Longfellow masterpiece with its nervous energy, rhythms and its sonorous word sounds, while she seamlessly interjects scathing moments of truth focused around an out of control father and bent on domination, just as the sea dominated the Hesperus and the Captain dominated his ship - or so he thought..........." (from: http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com /2013/06/10/new-hot-pink-slug-found-inaustralia/) A new species of a hot pink slug has been found on a single mountain in Australia. "Because the pink slugs live in beds of red eucalyptus leaves, [Australia’s National Parks and Wildlife Service ranger ] Micahel Murphy suspects their color could potentially serve as camouflage, helping the animals blend in to their leafy habitat. “However, [the slugs] also spend a lot of their time high on tree trunks nowhere near fallen leaves, so it is possible that the color is just a quirk of evolution. I think if you are isolated on a remote mountaintop, you can pretty much be whatever color you like,” Murphy noted." Ken Kesey may have also seen some of these creatures in La Honda in the early '60s :-) He never married. He is survived by 2 brothers and a sister, David Clement in Tucson AZ, John Clement in Albuquerque NM and Elizabeth Clement Bauer in Oak Ridge TN. "Warm weather doesn't just encourage humans to go outside, it also lures out rattlesnakes.... • If you see a snake, stop and keep your distance. Give the snake plenty of room to get away. • Wear heavy boots that are four inches above the ankle, and long pants when hiking. • Snakes are seen in cool areas, too. Always watch where you step and be sure to look for snakes in areas of high brush, under logs and when stepping over logs, or fallen trees. • When it’s cool, snakes seek warmer areas. Be observant for snakes sunning on rocks or trails, especially in the cooler times of day. • Never try to touch a snake or scare it away. Give the snake its space and back away to a safe place. “ [Long term La Honda Resident Bob Gray provided a Farewell message on the La Honda Message Board - go to http://groups.yahoo.com /group/LaHonda/message/36565 to read the entire message, which will bring back many memories for other long-term La Hondans like Bob] "Farewell, La Honda. After 44 years we departed for points East on 1 June. In the spirit of Jim Adams, I can not pass up the occasion to pass on a few reminiscences and several names, mostly about the seventies. Apologies for misspelled names. It has been a good run. I moved to La Honda in December 1969 after finishing college to work at Stanford, and Lolly and the kids followed the next year… …We miss friends, our former house (especially Jim's furniture), the views, the trails. In return here in Rockport Massachusetts we get closer to young granddaughters and we can actually walk to an ocean, a bay, restaurants, and the train. Like La Honda, the wilderness is a few minutes away on foot, and it is easy to walk to great (if not spectacular) views of ocean, bay, quarries, rocks (lots of granite!), and woods.Like La Honda we have ticks, but it is poison ivy instead of poison oak (and the ticks are more than likely to have Lyme). In the winter the tourists vanish and this place becomes a village, sort of like La Honda. Of course we have snow, but there is no through traffic -- Cape Ann is an island (with Rockport and Gloucester) and not on the way to anywhere. It is at the end of Rt 128 and the end of the (rail) line. cheers, bob Local Wins Top Prize at SMC Fair (excerpt from http://www.hmbreview.com/ community/coastsiders-win-big-at-countyfair/article_ae3520e6-df4c-11e2-b3730019bb2963f4.html) "About 200 people entered livestock and breeding animals, including cattle (steers and heifers, no bulls,) sheep, hogs, chickens, turkeys, goats and rabbits at this year’s 79th annual San Mateo Fair. ...” San Gregorio Resident Wade Watkins won the top prize in the heifer competition.
