For home school children
Wednesday 24 May – 9.30am – 11am (parking restrictions on Shepherd’s Road 9am – 11am on
one side and 2pm – 5pm on the other side)
5 – 7 year olds / maximum 10 children
Cost £6.50 per child
Duration 1.5hrs
ROUND THE CARPET DISCUSSION
What is a plant?
What different types/parts of a plant can you think of?
How are plants different from animals?
How do we use plants in our everyday lives?
PLANT IDENTIFICATION
Children break into small groups to see if they can name some common medicinal plants. With
support they can use an eyeglass to identify different characteristics of different plant families e.g.
daisy family, mint family. They then have the opportunity to draw and label their chosen plant.
MEDICINE MAKING
Round the kitchen table children are shown how to make a bites and stings salve by melting bees
wax in plant infused oils and adding essential oils. Discussions will include melting temperatures of
different fats, how some chemicals are water-soluble (great for making tea) whilst others are fatsoluble (great in oils). Children can decorate their own pot of salve to take home.
