Roman soldiers
Roman foot-soldiers, called legionaries, had full-time jobs in the army. Legionaries all wore
the same clothing and had the same equipment. This helped them fight together as a group.
Complete the names of the pieces of equipment and match them

Space ages
Did you know that you are a different age on each planet? This is because a year is the
time it takes an object in the Solar System to orbit the sun. The further away from
the Sun a planet is, the longer it takes to orbit.

Icelandic ash
!
• In 2010, a volcano in Iceland called Eyjafjallajökull belched
thousands of tonnes of ash into the sky.
• When magma rose up Eyjafjallajökull’s vent and reached
its summit it mixed with the snow and ice covering the
volcano. This mixture made the eruption very explosive.
W O W!
Eyjafjallajökull
is pronounced
“ay-uh-fyat-luhyo-kuutl”!
• The thick clouds of ash rose in a plume, or column,
up to 9 km (6 miles) high.
• Part of the ash cloud drifted across the Atlantic Ocean towards
North America.
• Thousands of aeroplane flights were cancelled, with
many companies losing millions of pounds. Imagine you are a journalist reporting on the volcanic eruption.
