Chipping Sodbury School Newsletter Online at: www.chippingsodburyschool.com February 2012 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Message from the Head Mufti Day - Yate/ ChippingSodbury Foodbank Welcome to our first newsletter of 2012. 1 2 Congratulations!, Audited School Fund 3 Accounts, Poppy Appeal 2011, ICT & Business Excellent Student Awards Expressive Arts Faculty News 4-5 World Book Day 5 The House Factor, CSS Friends Film Club 6 Rewarding Success in 7 KS4, Sports Centre Physical Education Faculty News 8-9 Holocaust Memorial Day 2012 10-11 Useful contacts and Dates 16 As the days lengthen (and very welcome too!) the school year seems to get busier and busier. Year 11 have just finished their trial exams and subject staff are analysing results and tailoring teaching in the limited time left to focus upon the needs of all our learners. It is critical now that Year 11 and Year 13 in particular settle to some regular, serious study – we have given much advice and guidance to them about how to focus their work and organise their revision, but if you feel that you would like more information about helping your son or daughter, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Clarke or me or the relevant subject leader. Many of our students are doing really well already, but for those who feel that they may have fallen behind a little, there is no need to panic – a concerted effort over these next weeks will have a great effect on summer outcomes, but they will need to start today. Even at this stage in the year, two hours of personal study five times a week will result in over 150 hours of revision by exam start – an amount that could transform results for students who are struggling. There is little alternative to hard work at this time and students can at least take comfort from the thought that they will have a very long and well deserved holiday directly after exams! We are also looking forward to the production of ‘Guys and Dolls’ that takes place between 8th - 10th February. The show offers our talented students a chance to show their abilities in front of a real audience. We can promise you an evening of song and dance for the whole family. Tickets are still available, (but selling fast). G Millington Headteacher “Committed to learning” Collection day – Friday 10th February Dining Hall 8am to 9.10am On the last day of term 3, Friday 10th February, instead of a 50p donation to charity for Mufti day we are asking students to bring in an item of non-perishable food which we will pass on to the new Yate and Chipping Sodbury Foodbank. This local foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust foodbank network which provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK. Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Last year their UK foodbank network fed over 60,000 people experiencing food poverty. The local foodbank has already helped local people in need since it opened in December. Students should bring their item of food to the Dining Hall on Friday 10th February between 8am and the start of lesson one. The items will then be sorted and transported to the foodbank. Thank you in advance for your support. Please help the foodbank to feed the hungry by donating any of the following non-perishable food items: Tomatoes – (Tinned) Sugar Orange juice (carton) Milk (UHT or powdered) Fruit – (Tinned) Breakfast Cereal Meat – (Tinned) Vegetables – (Tinned) Tuna / Fish – (Tinned) Pasta Sauce (Jar) Pasta / Noodles (Dried) Rice Tea Bags Rice Pudding – (Tinned) Baby Food Chocolate 2 Biscuits Reg. Charity No. 1000801 Reg. in England & Wales CONGRATULATIONS! A huge thanks and well done from the Attendance Group for the wonderful OFSTED result. OFSTED praised our high attendance – grading this as outstanding - and the thorough process undertaken to ensure that students and parents are supported to overcome attendance issues. We recognise that for some students making changes to improve their attendance can be troubling and difficult, but want to say well done to them and their parents/carers in supporting them to make those changes. And the good news keeps coming – attendance figures are 94.9% for Terms 1 and 2, which smashes our target for this year. This is even more pleasing as these are generally periods when high levels of colds and flu hit our students (and staff). Can we remind you that the absence line is the place to ring in for those rare absences, on the first day? 01454 862952 We would also remind you that we do not authorise holidays during time term, unless a clear justification is given. Please complete an absence form which can be collected from Reception or House Coordinators. Tom Blackmore and Harri Elliot from Year 11 represented us very well at the event and Tom writes below about their experience. My Time in Bath – By Harri Elliott I recently went to a piano workshop in Bath with Tom Blackmore. We went along with other people from different schools around Bristol. Most students there were Grade 7 & 8 but there was a lot of respect for lower grade students. In total there were about 15 of us pianists in the Bath College, in one of the special piano rooms. Inside the room there was a large, grand piano with other instruments around it. As we walked in and sat down the concert pianist was playing pieces of music which made me and Tom speechless. It was just amazing how he could layout a story in a piece of music without lyrics. After he had played he randomly called up people to come and play their piece of chosen music, to enter the competition. By chance I was the first to go up and play my piece of music, Wilder Reiter, with only a few faults. After I had finished my piece, he made me look like a fool by asking really complicated questions and asking me to pronounce my dynamics (Speed, tempo, louds and quiets) in Latin! After Tom Blackmore played his piece with a tiny hiccup, the concert pianist made him emphasise the beats by nodding his head and tapping his feat like a penguin and playing at the same time, which left him, like everyone else, looking like an idiot. But the professional pianist did say it was played beautifully before and after the nodding. On the way home, me and Tom were laughing about the time there from the piano hiccups we both made and the professional pianist do his impression of a piano. Tom and I went away aspiring to do as well as we could in our grades and to get the top so we could play like him. Only the day after did I remind myself that it was a competition and a person will win five free lessons with him. But I think we had just forgotten about it because everyone was so friendly and that the professional pianist was so informal to us all and made us feel welcome. I would like to thank everyone involved and thank Mrs William-Jones for giving the invitation to the concert in the first place. South Gloucestershire Wind Orchestra Course and Concert – October 2011 We were very proud to see four Chipping Sodbury students playing in the South Gloucestershire Wind Orchestra Concert at the end of October Half Term. Charlotte White, Beth Woolley, Tresta Mansfield and Alistair Mansfield represented the school well and thoroughly enjoyed the four days course of rehearsals which saw them performing a programme of British music. Well done to all of you! Christmas Performances Chipping Sodbury musicians were out and about in force over the festive period and were very grateful to all the support they received from parents and friends at the events. Player of the match was Morgan Woollen and Olivia Press who worked tirelessly right up until the final whistle. Other squad members included: Alex Bull, Katie Hudson, Sophie Press, Lucia Sadier and Emma Rodden. Year 10/11 The Year 10’s and 11’s combined to take on Patchway and put in a formidable performance against them winning 7-0. Player of the match was Shannon Simmons whose work rate was fantastic. Special mention should also go to Jess Adams in Year 7 who played with the Year 10’s and 11’s. Other squad members included: Louise King, Danika Dyer, Sophie Sawyer, Gemma Rallison and Kirsty Campbell. Year 9 Netball County Finals – Wednesday 7th December Having won all but one of their league matches, the Year 9’s qualified for the county netball finals. Our first match was against an extremely talented team from John Cabot School. The match was extremely tense and highly competitive with Chipping Sodbury winning by one goal in the end! We then went on to play off for a place in the next stage of the competition (regionals) and came up against our arch rivals at Castle School who had defeated us early in the season. The match, as always, was extremely competitive and Castle were leading at the end of the first three quarters. Chipping Sodbury battled back and had drawn level at the final whistle. This led to two minutes each way of extra time to try and find a winner. The game was end to end with us scoring followed by Castle scoring in quick session. Unfortunately when the final whistle went we were losing by one goal and therefore Castle go onto the next stage of the competition. There were tears of disappointment at the end but the Year 9 girls did Chipping Sodbury School proud and never gave up battling till the final whistle. Congratulations on a fantastic season of netball and some terrific results. Squad members included Sasha King ©, Ella Stevens, Georgia James, Jess Ganley, Nadia Cocking, Flo Langridge, Amy Bassett, Molly Wescott and Millie Woods. Cross Country Congratulations to the following boys from Chipping Sodbury School who have been selected to represent South Gloucestershire in the boys Cross Country Team. We really do have some fantastic talent in this school when it comes to long distance running: Harvey Woodruff, James Robinson, Adam Blue, Jack Lawler, Scott Mason, Ben Perrett, Steve Beardwell, Sam Glover, Jack Brawn. KS4 Girls and Boys Badminton The Year 11 girls and boys competed separately in a badminton tournament against other schools in the area to see who would progress further into the regional stages. The girls dominated their matches and played some high quality badminton and now go on to face other opposition in the regionals. Congratulations to Louise King, Beth Woolley, Danika Dyer and Sophie Sawyer Unfortunately the boys do not progress further but they did play some good quality badminton at times. Players included: Alex Mackrill, Dan Brown, Ben Melling and Ryan Liddington. Miss Winter 8 Fixtures v Castle School – Tuesday 10th January Year 11 Netball The Year 11 team played some good quality netball at times against Castle and now need to work on the consistency of their game play. I am confident that if they are able to do this, they will achieve some good results this season. Unfortunately they lost the first match of the season 23-7 to a very strong team from Castle. Player of the match was Beth Woolley© who worked consistently well in and around the shooting circle. Other squad members included: Tresta Mansfield, Louise King, Danika Dyer, Shannon Jeans, Carrie Wilson, Gemma Rallison, Saffron Peck and Lucy Kay. Year 10 Netball The Year 10 girls started the season strongly with a 10-4 win against Castle. They played some good netball during some periods of the match and now need to ensure that the quality of their passing and movement is strong throughout the entire duration of the game. Player of the match was Maelyne Coggins who scored some fantastic goals. Other squad members included: Charlotte Butcher ©, Emily Gravell, Yvette Bennett, Eva King, Katie Craythorne and Brooke Hillier. U14 Hockey The Under 14 team was made up from very enthusiastic players from Years 7, 8 and 9. They were up against a very strong team of mainly Year 9 players from Castle. Although Castle dominated for some parts of the game, Chipping Sodbury started to show some real progress towards the end of the game. I am sure that with more match experience the Under 14 hockey team will achieve some good results against other schools. Player of the match was Kayleigh Dando who was awesome as goalkeeper. Other squad members included: Flo Langridge, Millie Woods, Ellen Vines, Nadia Cocking, Pollyanna Dean, Sophie Press, Ellen Blyth, Amy Greenslade, Natasha Sadier, Morgan Woollen, Olivia Press and Lucia Sadier. Girls’ Fixtures v Brimsham – Wednesday 18th January Y11 Netball The Year 11 girls put in an awesome performance against Brimsham where they dominated for large parts of the match. The final score was a massive 18-1 to Chipping Sodbury. Player of the match was Beth Woolley © who caused huge problems for Brimsham in and around the shooting circle. Other squad members included: Louise King, Shannon Jeans, Carrie Wilson, Danika Dyer, Lucy Kay, Tresta Mansfield and Saffron Peck. Year 10 Netball The Year 10 team continued with their winning ways with a closely fought match against Brimsham. The game was very even in terms of possession but Chipping Sodbury School scored a goal in the final few seconds of the match securing victory 11-10. Player of the Match was Maelyne Coggins who scored some fantastic long range goals. Other squad members included: Yvette Bennett ©, Charlotte Butcher, Eva King, Susie Biggs, Lauren White, Dawn Barnaby, Katie Craythorne and Brooke Hillier. I survived and promised myself, I will tell the world what happened.” Lily Ebert, Holocaust survivor. Holocaust Memorial Day “At school I was under more and more pressure to hail Hitler. But I refused because in my heart I could never honour a man in this way as if he were a god who could save people. I was arrested at the age of 12.” Simone Arnold, Jehovah’s Witness and survivor of Nazi Persecution. 2012 Written by Kelsey Lloyd, Rosa Kay, Anna Adsett, Luke Curle, Ellis Brine, Aaron Chamberlain, and Nick Thomas. Year 9 Holocaust Memorial Day was created on 27th January 2000, when representatives from 44 governments around the world met together in Stockholm to discuss Holocaust education, remembrance and research, By the end of this meeting, all of the attendees had signed a declaration, which made them committed to keeping the memory of the people that had been murdered during the Holocaust . These murders had taken place under Nazi persecution and genocide. This declaration became The Statement Of Commitment, which is still used today. On HMD 2012 we must come together to Speak Up, Speak Out! Holocaust means 'complete destruction by fire'. It can also refer to the nuclear destruction at Hiroshima in Japan. Genocide was created after the Nazis attempted to kill many groups in Europe. Star Of David The Nazis made Jews wear the Star of David on their arm so that they could quickly and easily recognise a Jew to be shipped off to concentration camps. They were defined as second class citizens and needed to be recognised as a Jew, almost to shame them of their religion. It was also to make sure that Jews weren't gaining anything they shouldn't such as when going to the shops and Survivors Iby Knill was imprisoned as a political prisoner in Hungary, and was later deported to Auschwitz. She made a promise to a dying girl to tell people of her story. Now, today, she speaks to hundreds of people, each year, to make sure that the past crimes are 10 buying things that weren't available to Jews or walking on the pavement or entering a Non-Jew area. They wore the star so that people knew they were a member of the "hated race" and so that they could be treated as such. Darfur Darfur is a country in Africa that is devastated by genocide. This Genocide has claimed 400,000 lives and 100 people die each day, and 5000 die in a month. The Genocide began in February 2003 when two rebel groups started an uprising. The government retaliated with a scorched-earth campaign, enlisting the help of a militia of Arab nomadic tribes in the region against the innocent civilians Darfur of Darfur. Since February 2003, the Sudanese government in Khartoum and the government-sponsored Janjaweed militia have used rape, displacement, organized starvation, mass murder and threats against aid workers. Violence, disease, and displacement continue to kill thousands of innocent Darfurians every month. remembered and wont be repeated again. Mukesh Kapila was a British diplomat. He was head of the UN in Sudan and witnessed the start of the genocide in Darfur in April 2004. He was the person that alerted the international media even though it cost him his career. Star Of David Auschwitz Concentration Camps A concentration camp is a place where Nazis sent civilians, enemies, and any groups of people that did not conform such as the Jews and Jehovah's witnesses. They were mostly extremely unclean, and full of people seen as "undesirable citizens" to many Germans. It is where Nazis made people work for them in horrible conditions with thousands of other people. They were denied many things that they used to have access to which led to poor health which many people died from. In the concentration camps, people were tortured by Nazi guards but they did not kill them. Some people were also allowed to leave with special permission or from completing their sentences. This wasn't allowed in death camps. Death Camps Millions of Jews were sent to death camps during the Holocaust such as Auschwitz, where they were murdered, as well as Jehovah's witnesses, Roma and Sinti, and anyone who were seen as "enemies" to the German people. There is a big difference between concentration camps and death camps. Death camps were made during world war 2 and were used as the Nazis plan for the "Jewish Extermination". They worked to kill millions of Jews by gassing them and making them do extreme work under starvation conditions. The Nazis ordered Jews and any other victims to do what they were told and if they didn't then the only outcome for them would be death as the Nazi guards thought that this was the easiest way to get rid of any disobedient people. Disabled people were also forced to work, (even if this was impossible for them!) and if they simply couldn't do the task that they were set, they were shot. We held an assembly teaching Year 9 about Holocaust Memorial Day What we have learnt. We have learnt that there has been, and still is, murder and suffering across the world because of prejudice. In order to stop this from happening again, we should be brave enough to Speak up and Speak Out. Prejudice can come in many forms and we should try to prevent it whenever it happens. 11 Chipping Sodbury School Bowling Road Chipping Sodbury South Gloucestershire BS37 6EW Tel. 01454 862900 E-mail: [email protected] Dates for your diary Useful Contacts Name Position Mr G Millington Headteacher Ms J Passco Head’s PA Mr D Hinkins Deputy Head Ms K Turner Deputy Head Mrs L Leader Assistant Head Mrs K Rowlands Assistant Head Mrs L Beynon Assistant Head Mr R Blacker Business Manager Mrs L Broad Head of Key Stage 3 Mrs D Clarke Head of Key Stage 4 Ms G Hilleard Head of Key Stage 5 Ms S Stone House Coordinator Severn Mr D Yeomans House Coordinator Trym Mrs E Emms House Coordinator Avon Mrs J Strange House Coordinator Frome Mr D Bond Head of Life Division Mr K Mellens Head of Design and Technology Mr M Sayers Head of English Mrs A William-Jones Head of Expressive Arts Term 3: Tuesday 3rd January 2012 - Friday 10th February 2012 Miss H Kenyon Head of Humanities Term 4: Monday 20th February 2012 - Friday 30th March 2012 Ms L Jarvis Head of ICT/Business 2012 6 Feb 8 Feb 9 Feb 10 Feb 20 Feb 4 Mar 7 Mar 8 Mar 11 Mar 14 Mar 15 Mar 18 Mar 22 Mar 22 Mar 25 Mar 29 Mar 30 Mar 16 Apr 19 Apr 21/22 Apr 29 Apr House Events Week School Production School Production School Production MUFTI DAY Last day of Term 3 First day of Term 4 Y10 Ten Tors Training Y7 Reward Trip World Book Day Y10 Ten Tors Training INSET DAY Y9 & 10 History visit to Imperial War Museum Y10 Ten Tors Training Y11 Leavers’ photos Music concert at Colston Hall Y10 Ten Tors Training Post 16 Tutor Evening MUFTI DAY Last Day of Term 4 First Day of Term 5 Y10 PARENTS’ EVENING Y10 Ten Tors Training Weekend Y10 Ten Tors Training South Gloucestershire Council School Term Dates for remainder of Term 5: Monday 16th April 2012 - Friday 1st June 2012 Mr J Poole Head of Inclusion Division Ms M Moult Head of Maths Mrs A Morriss/Ms D Bryan Joint Heads of Modern Foreign Languages Miss C Maggs Head of Physical Education Mr M Stow/ Dr J Lewthwaite Joint Heads of Science Student Absence Line: 01454 862952 Email: [email protected] 12 Term 6: Monday 11th June 2012 - Thursday 19th July 2012 2011/2012 In-service Days for remainder of 2011-2012 Wednesday 14th March 2012 Friday 22nd June 2012
