Rabbi’s Message
The Joy and Gloom of Work
We spend a great deal of our lives
working. So using examples from the
Torah, I want to talk about the
meaning of work.
The Torah begins with God at work.
His creative labor is described in
human terms. He worked for six days
and then He rested. The choice of this
particular theme for the beginning of
the Torah is in order to convince us that human work is
a spiritual blessing, an emulation of the Creator. But
the Bible, after telling us that human work can bring
spiritual joy, immediately seems to contradict itself and
says that God told Adam that he must leave Eden and
work the fields, as a punishment for his sin. Work,
then, is a curse as well as a blessing. That is to say, it is
intended as a blessing, but, alas, it may become a curse.
Why does work become a miserable experience? The
Book of Exodus answers the question that the Book of
Genesis implies. In the story of Pharaoh’s treatment of
the Children of Israel, there is the explanation as to
why God’s gift of work becomes bitter drudgery.
I. Bitterness. When Pharaoh began the enslavement,
the Pyramids were already two thousand years old.
Egyptian building endured. Thus the Israelites could
have been invited to share the glory of building for the
centuries. But Pharaoh did not wish to inspire them
with pride in great achievements. He meant “to afflict
them…to embitter their lives.” The work could well
have been exalting, but it was imposed in hate and fear
as penal servitude.
Whatever one’s work is, the mood surrounding it determines our reaction to it. In a household of bitter quarrels, housework is a curse; in a household of mutual
respect and love, even repeated tasks will be joyously
done. So it was in Jacob’s youth, of which we are told,
“And Jacob served seven years for Rachel, but it
seemed unto him but a few days, because of his love for
her.”
II. Repetition. There were scores of special arts and
crafts working together in building the treasure cities
of Egypt. Pharaoh could have given the Israelites a
variety of tasks and the work would have been
interesting. But all that he let them do was to dig clay
for bricks---the same dull task from dawn till dark, and
every day from youth till old age. When our work
becomes repetitious it loses its joy and becomes
drudgery.
III. No Progress. Joseph himself had been a slave in
Egypt, in fact, twice. Yet each time he advanced to
greater achievement and higher status. But the Israelites, no matter how hard they worked, could never
advance. Whatever they did, they remained slaves generation after generation for four hundred years.
There can never be joy in our work unless we believe
that our work can improve our skill and advance our
future. That is why adult education is so important.
Whenever a person reads, he/she can learn and grow,
There is no limit to the progress of the mind.
God’s gifts are blessings. But they are strange blessings
-- they spoil so easily.
He gives us life, but life can be ruined by carelessness.
He gives us love and love can be blighted by callousness.
He gives us the joy of work and the joy can be blasted
by an atmosphere of hate, by drudgery of repetition, by
the loss of hope in progress.
The beginning of Exodus explains the beginning of
Genesis. God’s own example of creative work must be
followed carefully.

President’s Message
And now… back to All in the Temple…
I would like to introduce you to two
of our newest members of Temple
Beth Sholom, Allan and Mae
Margolis. This couple hails from
Bridgeport, making a new home in
Hamden. Simply put, family is what
brought the Margolis’ to Hamden.
Allan’s niece is none other than our
past president, Lauren Ortman. They
live in the same building complex as Lauren’s parents,
their brother and sister- in-law, Lester and Bernice
Margolis - also members of TBS.
Allan and Mae joined Temple Beth Sholom in the
summer of 2008. Active members for 55 years, they are
still associate members of Congregation Rodeph Sholom
in Bridgeport.
“We need to be affiliated. It’s important to us.” says,
Mae. “We thoroughly enjoyed being a part of Rabbi
Scolnic’s 25th anniversary celebration. We have also
attended Friday night and Saturday Shabbat services.
Rabbi Scolnic has made us feel very comfortable as we
make the transition to our new synagogue.”
For years, the Margolis’s were active volunteers at the
Jewish Home in Fairfield. They hope to become
involved in our own Mitzvah committee by either
baking for the residents or assisting at the bi-monthly
programs.
Mae and Allan have family up and down the east coast.
They are looking forward to visiting family in Florida
very soon. The Margolis’ have 2 daughters and are
excitingly waiting for the birth of their first great
grandchild in the spring.
Mae is a knitter that loves to do the most intricate
patterns and one of Allan’s hobbies was always working
outdoors before making the move to Hamden. Mae also
loves to cook. Granddaughter Johanna has compiled
favorite recipes into a cookbook titled, Chopped Liver,
Chicken Soup and Chocolate Cake: Grandma Mae’s
Favorite Recipes. Enjoy one of their family’s favorite
Passover treat.
Passover Toffee Squares
1 cup parve margarine
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
1 cup cake meal
¼ teaspoon salt
8 ounces milk chocolate bits
1 cup chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream butter,
vanilla, sugar and salt until light and fluffy. Mix
in egg – beat well. Add cake meal gradually.
Blend well. Dough should be stiff. Lightly grease
10”x15” jelly roll pan. Spread dough in pan-even
to all sides and corners. Bake 20-25 minutes.
After baking, pour melted chocolate bits over the
cooked dough. Sprinkle chopped nuts over
chocolate and press slightly. Cut into squares
before cooled.
Mae would love to see Temple Beth Sholom start a book
club that could meet during the day. Our beautiful
library is available for meetings just for that purpose.
So, please contact the office and I will be happy to
connect you to two lovely people who would like to get
to know more of our congregants.
Welcome, Allan and Mae. We are glad you are part of
our growing, caring community.

Mitzvah Committee
Better Late Than Never
Due to a major snowstorm, our Chanukah celebration
was held on December 26th, the very last day of Chanukah instead of December 19th. As in past years, Rabbi
The Jewish War Vets and their spouses were supposed
to join us at the Friday service that was snowed out on
December 19th. We were happy that they were able to
be at our January 9th Friday service. The Sabbath candles were lit and Rabbi Scolnic led the service as everyone participated. Julie Hyatt recited the prayers over
the wine and challah. After the service, the Rabbi
acknowledged and thanked the veterans for
their service to their country. He also
acknowledged and praised the Mitzvah
Committee for their 39 years of continuous
dedicated service to the residents of the
Arden House.
We had planned on providing latkes for this
postponed Chanukah service (which the Vets
graciously sponsored) but much to our
delight, we were treated to “home made
latkes” made by the president of the group –
Bill Brody. Not only were the latkes good
looking- they were also very delicious. Along
Scolnic lit the menorah and spoke about the holiday after which we sang songs and many
residents tried their hand at spinning the
dreidels (not too easy a task when one is up there
in age). With the help of my grandchildren Sarah
and Ben Stein, the committee served everyone
hot latkes, applesauce, hors d’oeuvres of corned
beef and pastrami on rye and a slice of pickle. The
desserts were beautiful Chanukah cookies that
were baked by Florence Frohman and were
shaped as Jewish stars and dreidels with blue
icing drizzled on them, jelly filled doughnuts and
cut fresh fruit. Chanukah gifts were then
presented to the residents- shirts for the men and
sweaters for the women. Everyone had a really
great time.
with the latkes we served applesauce, gefilta
fish, chopped liver, challah and wine. Patti
Caplan and Jessica Malkin were the bakers for
the day and along with their pastries we served
fresh cut fruit, which is always a treat for the
residents.
So the saying “Better Late Than Never” came
true for all of us – both late celebrations were
great!

Social Action
The holiday season was much brighter for two families
in the case load of Charlene Rigsbee, our adopted social
worker at the Department of Children and Families.
Thanks to generous donations from several temple
members, we were able to supply each child with an mp3
player and gift cards to area stores so that they could
shop for clothes and other necessities. We also sent
along grocery store gift certificates so that there could be
food for these hungry families. A special thanks to Ellen
Litt, who donated her mother's washing machine, and to
Charlie Turner, who picked up the washing machine
and delivered it to a struggling mother. This really
made her day brighter and easier.
You also filled the basket and box in the back hall with
food staples. On a snowy morning in late December,
Wayne Shore filled his wagon with a load of food for the
Jewish Family Service Food Pantry. In these stark economic times, we need to continue to contribute food for
those in need. We will take kosher staples to the JFS
pantry on Whalley Ave. and items contributed for the
Hamden Food Bank to the Keefe Center on Dixwell Ave.
Within a day of my sending out a request for twelve volunteers (one for each month in the year) to purchase
and deliver two dozens pieces of whole fresh fruit for a
New Haven Recovery shelter, I had more offers than I
needed. New Haven Home Recovery Inc. is a non-profit
organization working in the New Haven area to address
the housing and support service needs of women with
children. NHHR provides services to families who are
homeless or at risk of homelessness. They operate two
shelters for women and their children. The shelters are
able to provide food for their clients, but it is difficult
for them to maintain a supply of fresh fruit. We have
been supplying fruit for two years, and our efforts are
very much appreciated. This year, we may actually be
able to supply fruit twice a month, a wonderful example
of the volunteer spirit at TBS.
I have been feeling very guilty because I was unable to
organize a shipment of holiday gifts for our Jewish
troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, so I am planning a different mailing this year, this one in time for
Purim. It certainly would be appropriate to send Mishloach Manot in the form of snacks. It would also be
great to include leisure time activity items such as CDs
or DVDs, puzzle books, magazines, and small games, as
well as health and hygiene items such as hand sanitizers, toothpaste and toothbrushes, etc. I am anticipating preparing these packages on a Sunday morning in
mid-February. If you can help, by donating items, contributing to underwrite the shipping costs, packing the
boxes, or taking packages to the post office, it would be
appreciated.
And if you are interested in volunteering your time for
the Chesed project, the Jewish Coalition for Literacy, or
the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, please contact me.
Thanks to all. You really make my heart rejoice.

What A Difference
Designated Funds Make…
They say that what goes around comes around and
that really works for designated funds! When you
make a donation to a designated fund everyone
benefits… the designated fund, the temple and the
requester so every dollar donated can be used for
specific temple related needs.
We recently helped a student who is studying in
Israel and were able to give K'tanim money for a
special project.
So please think of designated funds when you make
donations to the temple. Everyone benefits! The
funds are described on the TBS website or from the
temple office.
Donate often.
Thanks, the Designated Funds Committee.

K’Tanim Kids’ Corner
Hello All:
The K’tanim kids turned their classrooms into a winter
wonderland during the month of January. We painted
many snow scenes and practiced our fine motor skills
by cutting an endless supply of snowflakes.
January was a busy month for USY. On Sunday, January 18th we went to see a special screening of the movie,
“Defiance”, at the Criterion Theater in New Haven.
This movie is based on a true story taking place during
World War II. We definitely would recommend seeing it.
On Monday, January 19th we returned to Hamden
Health Care to go “clowning”. We visited the residents
room to room. It was a fun morning for all and a nice
way to brighten up a winter day.
On February 8th, 1:00PM we are having an ice cream
social and a planning meeting at the Temple to discuss
the Purim carnival. Mid Winter Kinnus is February 6-8
in Stamford, CT.
We are always looking for new members. If you would
like more information please email me. If you would
like to make a donation to the Tiby Mathog Fund, it
will help defray the cost of Regional and International
Conventions. USY teens in grades 9th - 12th will benefit
with scholarships for future events.

The twos began a unit on colors and shapes. They wore
different colors each day, enjoyed colorful snacks and
read many books. Each child made his own color book
with a variety of art supplies.
The older classroom completed a unit on nursery
rhymes. The children explored several rhymes in depth,
often completing extension activities relative to the
rhyme of the day. On pajama day the rhyme was “Wee
Willie Winkie”, and we learned how to tell time to the
hour. We also brought our stuffed animals to school,
and we shared breakfast foods for Shabbat.
Our Larson Place friends visited and we filled “Old
Mother Hubbard’s Cubbard” with many healthy treats
to share with our adopted grandmas and grandpas. The
children recited several poems and sang songs.
K’tanim Enrollment
K’tanim has Jewish preschool programs for 2
through 4 year olds and a parent/child program for
14 months and older. Call TBS or Sheryl for more
information.

KADIMA
It’s not too late to join the Kadima youth group! Any
member of the synagogue in 6th, 7th or 8th grade is
welcome to join the fun.
In December we had a blast at the Connecticut Sports
Complex playing video games and several rounds of
laser tag. January is a great month to stay in, so we
enjoyed a movie at my house and ate lots of popcorn!
We will venture out into the cold on Sunday, February
8th for some slippery snow tubing at Woodbury Ski
slopes. March is “Mitzvah Month”! Come help us make
hamantashan. We will deliver them to Arden House on
Sunday March 1st. The Purim fun continues as we help
USY with the Purim Carnival on Sunday March 8th.
Interested in any of these activities?

Shalom to all Families! I would like to thank some wonderful people for helping us to make the Chanukah Program
