Required:
All But My Life – Gerda Weissman Klein
The Book Thief -- Markus Zusak
Read both of the books above. For both works, record a double entry journal for each chapter/section.
Label each new chapter/section. On the left side of the notebook page, summarize what is happening in
the text or record important quotes. On the right side of page, record your reactions (what you are
thinking, opinions you are forming, questions you are wondering, and/or situations you can connect
to). These journals will be the basis of classroom discussion, a test, and a project.

LITERATURE SURVEY I HONORS

Three Cups of Tea – Greg Mortenson & David Oliver Relin
Keep a journal on 1984. This journal should be a record of your thoughts and feelings as you read the
literary work. Be sure to write your reactions as soon as you read. As part of your response, identify
important quotations and develop thoughtful questions. Avoid simple plot summary; instead interact with
the reading and your ideas. You may hand write your journal or word-process it. When you return to
school, you will be asked to write an insightful paper on the required work, so you might want to begin
thinking about possible topics and approaches as you read.

Autobiography of a Face – Lucy Grealy
Keep a journal for Biography of a Face. In it, record setting (time and place) and major characters and a
brief description of each. State what you feel is the author’s purpose (reason for writing) and tone
(author’s attitude). For each chapter identify important quotes and develop thoughtful questions as your
record your reaction to the author’s story. AVOID GIVING A PLOT SUMMARY. You may hand write your
journal or word-process it. When you return to school, you will be asked to write an insightful paper on the
required work, so you might want to begin thinking about possible topics and approaches as you read.

Students should complete a double entry journal in which they record their responses to text in a
composition notebook as they read. Students should write down phrases or sentences from their assigned
reading, including page numbers, and then write their own reaction to that passage.
They should have a minimum of 15 entries per book, and their reactions should show depth and careful
personal reflection.

the task below:

The Scarlet Ibis – James Hurst
Task: In addition to reading these four stories, which are all available online, in the library, and in the
bookstore, students will need to do brief, independent research to answer the following questions which
will be due, handwritten, on lined paper, on the first day of class: 1. What was happening in America
economically, socially, and/or politically during the era that each story was written? 2. What connections
do you see in each story and what you discovered about American culture at the time it was written?
(Cite specific evidence from the story.) 3. If you were to make all four of these stories into a short film,
which could you simply place in America, 2016, and which ones would need to be heavily edited to place
in current America? Explain your decision for each.

Honors US: In addition to completing the assignment above, students in Honors US will be e-mailed an
additional assignment in early July.
AP U.S. HISTORY
A.P. US: In addition to completing the assignment above, A.P. US students will be e-mailed a password to
the summer assignment Schoology page for APUSH in early July and will be completing guided reading
packets for the first four chapters of the AP textbook.

AP GOVERNMENT
All the following stated information is in a packet provided by Mr. McKinnon. "Read copies of two AP
Chapters (One Republic - Two Americas and The Constitution) and study guides for each, answer
questions, we will review these chapter for 3 days before a test on both. There is also a 5 page essay on
James Madison and the Constitution due the first day of class, detailed on the packet.
