THE PARISHES OF ST. MARY & OUR LADY OF GRACE PAGE 2
MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN
Sixth Week of Easter
“Because the Holy Spirit is the anointing of Christ, it is Christ
who, as the head of the Body, pours out the Spirit among his
members to nourish, heal, and organize them in their mutual
functions, to give them life, send them to bear witness, and
associate them to his self-offering to the Father and to his
intercession for the whole world. Through the Church’s
sacraments, Christ communicates his Holy and sanctifying Spirit
to the members of his Body.” (CCC 739)

St. Rita of Cascia was born in 1381 in the town of Roccaporena in Umbria. She
lived with a brutal husband and had two sons. After the violent murder of her
husband, she urged forgiveness in contrast to the customary vendetta of her day.
Becoming an Augustinian nun, she spent some forty years in prayer, contemplation, and service to the sick and poor. Toward the end of her life, she received a
wound from a thorn from the crown of thorns. She died in 1457. She is the patron
saint of those in desperate situations.
St. Bede the Venerable was born in Northumbria. He was called “Venerable”
while still living. He authored the Ecclesiastical History of the English people and
wrote Scriptural expositions, commentaries, and homilies. He is known as the
“Father of English history.” He died in 735.
St. Gregory VII was from Tuscany. He championed reform of the clergy against
simony, clerical marriage, and lay investiture, leading to the excommunication of
Henry IV. He expanded the authority of the Roman See. He died in 1085.

St. Mary Magdalene de’Pazzi was a Carmelite mystic of Florence who led a
hidden life of prayer and self-denial, praying particularly for the renewal of the
Church and encouraging her fellow sisters in holiness. She was instrumental in
the reform of her Order. She died in 1607.
St. Philip Neri founded in 1575 the Congregation of Priests of the Oratory, today
numbering about 570 members, to promote holiness of priestly life and foster
effective preaching. He is noted for his joyful and simple spirit, and his use of
short, wise maxims. He is also known as the “Apostle of Rome” and “Reformer of
the Eternal City.” He died in 1595.
St. Augustine of Canterbury was a monk of Mt. Coelius in Rome. He was sent
with forty other monks by Pope Gregory I to England, where he baptized
Ethelbert, king of Kent. He was ordained a bishop in 597 and established the Sees
of Canterbury, London and Rochester. In 601 he received the pallium as Primate
of England. He died May 26, 604(5).

Evangelization Clip
by Deacon Jim Schiltz
May 14, 2017
In today’s first reading (from Acts 8), we see how the
Sacramental Cycle the Church of today matches that of the
early Church. Phillip, one of the seven first deacons,
preached and baptized in Samaria. The Apostles heard this.
Two of the first Bishops, Peter and John, came and
confirmed them—and they received the Holy Spirit. Just
like today, our children are baptized by a priest or deacon
and later confirmed by a bishop. Life in the Catholic
Church is really life in the cycle of the seven Sacraments.
Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and
Eucharist); Sacraments of Healing (Reconciliation and
Anointing of the Sick); and of Service (Matrimony and
Holy Orders). How does your day to day, year to year,
decade to decade life fit into the Lifecycle of the
Sacraments of the Catholic Church? It is pretty obvious, if
you think about it. Draw closer to the Church. Be proud to
be Catholic. Talk about it with your spouse and children.
† Prayer and Sympathy †
Please keep the family of Clara Kartes in your prayers as
they mourn the passing of their loved one. Clara was
remembered in a funeral Mass on Tuesday, May 16th
at St. Mary’s with Fr. Matt presiding.
Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let your
perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Thank You!
A huge thank you to Michael and Anne Pawlowski
and Twin Lake Greenhouse for the donation of
geraniums on Mother’s Day at Our Lady of Grace.
Your generosity is truly appreciated!

Praying the Rosary Like Never Before :
Dr. Edward Sri is a nationally sought Catholic speaker
who appears regularly on EWTN, and is a founding
leader of FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University
Students). In this discussion of his book The New
Rosary in Scripture: Biblical Insights on Praying the Twenty
Mysteries (Servant Books), Dr. Sri shares St. John Paul
II’s practical strategies for praying the Rosary better,
so that you can encounter Jesus more deeply in this
prayer.
Faith CDs are available in the East hallway at Our
Lady of Grace and in the narthex at St. Mary’s.
We ask for a donation of $4.00 per CD or $10 for 3
CDs. Checks can be made payable to the parish.

Rain or Shine - Let’s CELEBRATE LIFE!
Leave A Legacy® to Your Parish
Stewardship, our response to being Christ’s disciple, has four fundamental principles: gratitude for God’s gifts,
nurturing our families, sharing our time and talent with our communion of faith, and returning to God the first
fruits of our labor. Making a will and other estate planning documents encompasses all of these stewardship
principles, and all adults should have these important documents in place.
Governor Snyder has proclaimed the month of May as LEAVE A LEGACY® MONTH in Michigan to encourage
legacy gifts through bequests in our wills and trusts to the nonprofit organizations we support during our
lifetimes. In making your will or trust, or reviewing other arrangements, such as life insurance and your IRA or
other retirement plan, consider a bequest or beneficiary designation to Our Lady of Grace or St. Mary’s. If you
make your gift as an endowment, your support of Christ’s ministries here will continue for many generations.
There may be tax deduction and income benefits to you and your family as well.
The proper language for your bequest or other beneficiary designation is:
To the parish: “To Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids, or
his Successors in Office, for [Our Lady of Grace, Muskegon, MI] or [St. Mary’s Church, Muskegon, MI].
To the parish endowment fund: “To The Catholic Foundation of West Michigan, Grand Rapids, Michigan, for the
benefit of [Our Lady of Grace] or [St. Mary’s] Parish Endowment Fund.”
For further information on giving to Our Lady of Grace or St. Mary’s through your will, trust or other
arrangements, please call Mark Morrow, Executive Director of The Catholic Foundation of West Michigan, at
616-475-1251.
