Brutus Understands an Oracle
Lucius Tarquinius was always wanting very great power. After that
man assassinated the sixth king of Rome, he appointed himself king.
One day a strange serpent came into his palace. Distraught, Tarquinius
said to himself, “The gods have sent this [as a] sign to me. What does it
mean?”
Then the king hatched a very good plan. He summoned his sons, Titus
and Arruns, to him. “O my sons,” he said, “I shall send you to the most
famous oracle in the world. Beg the help of the god Apollo.”
On the next day the brothers along with Brutus, whose mother was
the king’s sister, departed from the city. Soon they were sailing to
Greece. After a long and very arduous journey they came to the town of
Delphi. There the young men asked the oracle not only about the
serpent, but also this question: “To whom after the death of our father
will the Roman kingdom/rule come?”
Forth from the cave they heard this utterance: “He shall have the
highest authority who is/will be the first of you, o young men, to give a
kiss to his mother.”
At once Brutus, who was cleverer than Titus and Arruns, fell to the
ground. That man gave a kiss to the earth/ground secretly, because that
is the mother of all men.
Afterwards Brutus, because of the very many wicked deeds of the
king, stirred up the Roman people with these words: “We must drive out
this tyrant into exile!” The residents began to shout raucously, “We
Romans will never have another king!”
And so Brutus and the people cast out the kings and formed a
republic. The citizens named Brutus and his friend consuls.
