These program notes are normally all about our
guest artists. Thanks to Ryan Keberle’s impressive
Big Band Living Legacy Project, things are a little
different this time around. More about that later.
First things first…
Ryan Keberle is a very talented young trombonist
based in New York, a gifted composer and
accomplished educator (Director of Jazz Studies at
Hunter College). As stated in his biography, “Few
musicians have managed to negotiate the richly
varied avenues of New York City’s abundant music
scene with the same passion and adaptability. Since
his arrival in 1999, Keberle’s diverse talents have
earned him a place alongside a staggering array of
legends, superstars and up-and-coming innovators.”
Ryan has performed in the ground-breaking big
bands of Maria Schneider and Darcy James Argue,
with Alicia Keys and Justin Timberlake, with
Wynton Marsalis and Rufus Reid. He’s been heard on
numerous film soundtracks and regularly subs for
Steve Turre in the Saturday Night Live band. Ryan’s
piano-less quartet, Catharsis, featuring trumpeter
Michael Rodriguez, has received rave reviews for
their first two albums, Music Is Emotion and the justreleased Into the Zone. Keberle is definitely making
his mark.

has performed and toured with Clark Terry, Quincy
Jones, Joe Lovano, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra,
Chico O’Farrill Jazz Orchestra, Lincoln Center
Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Conrad Herwig, the
Clayton Brothers, Eddie Palmieri, Gonzalo
Rubalcaba, Charlie Haden and Harry Connick Jr.
Michael also performs with his brother, pianist/
composer Robert, as The Rodriguez Brothers. On
the jazz faculty at NYU’s Steinhardt School—and
named a “rising star” in the 2014 Downbeat Critics
Poll—Michael Rodriguez is one of the best young
trumpet players on the New York scene.
For this, our 39th Annual Winter Carnival concert, we
are focusing on some of the greatest big band music
of the 20th century, thanks to Ryan Keberle’s Big
Band Living Legacy Project. Ryan dreamed about doing this for years, and it finally happened in 2014. As
Keberle states, “The purpose of this project is to celebrate, present and carry on the rich musical
language of big band jazz.” Ryan performed this
repertoire in New York with original members of
such classic big bands as Count Basie, Woody
Herman, Buddy Rich and Benny Goodman. When I
heard about that concert and read a review, I knew
immediately that this repertoire was what we should
perform for Winter Carnival.
I guarantee this concert will delight any and all of you
who—like Keberle, Rodriguez, myself and the
students in the Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble—want
to celebrate the rich heritage and musical language
of big band jazz!
Here’s what’s cooking:
• Big Dipper. From the master, Thad Jones (for the
Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra).
• Blue Skies. Arranged by the gifted composer and
pianist, Mary Lou Williams, for Duke Ellington.
• Corner Pocket. Ernie Wilkins’ beautiful arrangement of the Count Basie classic by Freddie Green.
• Cottontail. A masterclass in swing by Duke Ellington.
• El Camino Real. J.J. Johnson’s wonderful composition, as performed by J.J. and The Brass Orchestra.
• Hello and Goodbye. Bob Brookmeyer’s brilliant
composition, written for and performed by Mel
Lewis & the Jazz Orchestra.
• Hoe Down. What would any self-respecting big
band concert be without this barn-burner by Oliver
Nelson...

• I Like the Sunrise. Part of Ellington’s Liberian Suite,
this lovely ballad for big band and vocal, was sung, at
different times, by Al Hibbler, Frank Sinatra and Ella
Fitzgerald with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Our
own talented vocalist, Tyné Freeman ’17, will sing this
with us tonight.
• Intermission Riff. Ray Wetzel’s driving, memorable
theme song for the Stan Kenton Orchestra.
• Just Waiting. A beautiful ballad by the talented
trombonist and composer/arranger, Melba Liston.
• King Porter Stomp. Fletcher Henderson’s remarkable arrangement, as performed by Benny
Goodman.
Evans’ breathtaking arrangement for Miles Davis.

where people still play this kind of music—and pass it

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
The Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble is the student
jazz ensemble of Dartmouth College. Composed
almost entirely of non-music majors, the ensemble
specializes in the music of the African-American
and Afro-Caribbean jazz traditions. The Barbary
Coast has performed with such outstanding
musicians as Toshiko Akiyoshi, Marshall Allen, Ray
Anderson, Peter Apfelbaum, Karl Berger, Steven
Bernstein, Jimmy Bosch, Joe Bowie, Lester Bowie,
Don Cherry, Andy & Jerry Gonzalez, Dexter

Coast performed in the Downbeat International
Class competition of the Canadian National Stage
Band Festival at EXPO ‘86, the World’s Fair in
Vancouver, B.C. In 1992 the Coast was the featured
ensemble in the First Annual Jazz Festival of the
Vermont Chapter of the International Association
of Jazz Educators. In 2004 the Coast took
a successful whirlwind tour to Newport, RI,
performing five times in three days. In May 2007
the ensemble performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center
for a special event, You, Dartmouth & All That Jazz.
In March 2013, as part of the 50th Anniversary of
the Hopkins Center, the Barbary Coast did a highly
acclaimed Big Band Funk tour to New York City
with special guest, Joe Bowie.
Don Glasgo director has taught courses in jazz,
jazz and literature, American music and world
music at the colleges of Dartmouth, Hamilton,
Lyndon State and in the graduate program of
Vermont College. For twelve years he was also a
faculty member in music at Goddard College,
where he directed the Institute for Creative Music
and SALSA MEETS JAZZ: The Afro-Caribbean
Jazz Seminar with the Eddie Palmieri Octet. Don

has written over 100 jazz compositions and
arrangements, many of them premiered by the
Barbary Coast, and he was recently hired to write
professional arrangements for Joe Bowie’s
Defunkt Big Band. Glasgo is an accomplished
valve trombonist who has performed with the
Dartmouth College Gospel Choir, Dartmouth Idol,
Oliver Lake Big Band, Joseph Bowie’s Defunkt Big
Band, Michael Ray & the Cosmic Krewe, The Sun
Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen
and Phish. He leads his own professional bands,
Sol Food and Sol Food Unplugged, is the author of
Jazzlines and a former columnist for Jazz Improv. In
2009 he was a professor at Trombonanza 2009
(Santa Fe, Argentina). From 2008-2012 he was the
Associate Director of the Rutgers Summer Jazz
Institute (New Brunswick, NJ). This is his 39th year
as director of the Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble.
