Cardboard Boat Regatta
DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION:
Design:
Safety First! - The design of the boat should NOT be enclosed as to interfere with
escape by crew should the boat tip or sink.
• What’s your booty? -Consider the “booty” by looking at the award categories. Are you
designing for fun, speed, complexity, looks, or all three etc…?
v Flat bottoms are the easiest to sit in and paddle.
v Long boats go faster, but they are harder to turn.
v Short boats are difficult to steer straight.
v Rudders help steer the boat, but make turning difficult and add to the design
complexity.
• What floats your boat?
v Interior Room- Consider the type of race you will enter: 2-person crew or 3-8 person
crew and build your boat with enough space to hold the crew.
v Weight-The boat must be able to be transported from the Pirate’s Promenade to the
starting line, and it must be removed from the water immediately after the race. A
1’x1’x3’ box will float approximately 187 lbs., for example.
v Width- Boats may be a maximum width of 5 ft. –A 4 foot wide boat allows for 2
persons to sit side by side.
v Length-maximum length of 12 ft.
v Height- There is not a maximum height requirement. 18 “ allows the crew to sit or
kneel and still paddle over the sides.
• Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
v Use your imagination and have fun!
v Sketch the design on paper first, and then build a scale model from Manila paper.
v Boat decorations are encouraged as well as a festively dressed crew!
•
Construction Rules:
•
•
Safety First!
• Decorations are allowed as long as they don’t affect nor endanger the safety
of participants. The event staff reserves the right to ask a crew to remove
any decorations that do so.
The ENTIRE BOAT must be built of cardboard and it may be as thick as you want.
v Use cardboard boxes, “blocks,” carpet tubes (Tubes make great frames).
v NO pre-treated cardboard is allowed such as Sona-tubes, waxed or treated
cardboard
v NO wood, plastic, or fiberglass.
v NO caulking compounds or two-part/mixed adhesives.
v NO wrapping of the entire boat in duct tape, plastic, or fiberglass.

Construction Rules (continued):
• Adhesives
v Carpenter’s glue, liquid nails, masking tape and duct tape may be used at the
seams or stress points where the crew will sit or kneel. Remember, cardboard
edges act like a sieve, so cover with duct tape. If painting your boat, cover the
duct tape with masking tape before painting, unless you want the duct tap to
show.
v NO hot glue, epoxy, or clear plastic tape allowed.
• Waterproofing may be used to prevent sinking unless you are after the famed Titanic
Award .
v You may use latex paint, a one part varnish, or polyurethane ( 1 part,
paint-like substance)
v Contestants are not allowed to use any substance that might be harmful
to the environment.
