DearStudent,
IfyouareinterestedinapplyingforExchange(orStudyAbroad),pleaseconsiderthe
followinginformation:
Part1:Generalguidelines
1) OnlystudentswhohavedoneatleasttwosemestersofFrenchatMelbourne
UniversitywillbeeligibletoapplyforFrenchcreditstowardstheirMelbourne
Universitydegree.Thismeansthatyouwillnotbeapprovedforcredittotake
FrenchBeginnerscoursesoverseas.(*Thisdoesnotapplytostudentsjusttakingoneor
twooverseasFrenchcoursesaspartoftheirBreadthsubjects).
2) Therewillbenocreditgivenretrospectively.Allsubjectsmustbeapproved
beforeyouundertakethem.Ifanyofthepre-approvedsubjectsarenolonger
availableorifyouhavetotakeaPlacementTestandsubsequentlyareplacedin
adifferentcourse,youmustcontactandinformyourLanguageExchangeAdviser
assoonaspossibletoseekapprovalforthenewsubjects.
3) PleasebearinmindthatalltheFrenchlanguageandculturesubjectshavea
strongculturalcomponentandarenotlanguage-onlysubjects.Youshouldmake
surethatthelanguagesubjectyouareselectingforyourstudyplanalsoincludes
asignificantculturalcomponent.

Youmuststudyatanexchangepartnerinstitutionoverseas.Moststudentsseekcredit
forstudyingFrenchinFrance,inGenevainSwitzerlandorinQuebecinCanada.Youmay

Normallystudentstakeafullload(50pointspersemester)whichintermsofthe
EuropeanCreditTransferSystem(ECTS)means30ECTScreditsorintheCanadian
systemis15credits.AloadofthreeMelbournesubjects(37.5points)translatesas22.5
ECTSalthoughyoumaybestudyingmorethanthreesubjectstomeetthisload
requirement.InCanadaitwouldbe12credits.

A.Frenchlanguagesubjects
a)StudentswhocommencedtheirstudyofFrenchatFrench5orhigher
Usually,studentsarerequiredtodosomekindofFrenchlanguagecoursewhichis
credit-bearing.Thecoursemayfocusonlanguagebutcanalsodealwithhowtogo
aboutspecificassessmenttasks.Thecreditforthiscourse,anditstitle,variesfrom
institutiontoinstitution,andmayneedtobecombinedwithacontenttypesubject(e.g.
atLyonIII).Typicalexamplesareasfollows:
o LyonII:Suivilinguistiqueetméthodologique(5ECTS)
o LyonIII:Françaislangueétrangère/FrenchasForeignLanguage(6ECTS)+
Introductionàlacultureetcivilisationfrançaises(2ECTS)
o Bordeaux:Françaislangueétrangère(4ECTS)+Tutoratgéographique(1.5)
o Sciences-Po:eachsemester,studentstakeaFrenchlanguagesubject(worth4

b)StudentswhocommencedtheirstudyofFrenchatFrench1toFrench4
Generally,weadvisestudentstotaketheSELF(StudyinEnglish,Lyon,France)program
atLyonIII,andthesubjectstheystudy(inEnglish)arecreditedtowardsgeneralArts.In
addition,studentstakeaFrenchasaForeignLanguagesubjectwhichiscredited
towardsFrench.
Studentsarenormallyintheirthirdyearwhentheygoonexchange–werecommend
thattheyhavealreadycompletedFrench5beforegoingonexchange.Theymusttake
the‘Advanced’levelofFrench,thehighestlevelthatLyonIIIoffers.
Inaddition,Sciences-PoofferssubjectsinEnglish.
WealsoadvisestudentstotakesubjectsintheFrenchasaSecondLanguage(FRSL)
programattheFrenchLanguageCentreatMcGillUniversityinMontreal,Canada(notto
beconfusedwiththeFrenchLanguageandLiteratureDepartment).Thecoursecodes
FRSL300and400indicateanIntermediateandPost-Intermediatelevel(French3–
French4).Studentswillsitaplacementtestandwillnormallytakeonelanguagesubject
(oral&writtencourseorwritingcourse)togetherwithaculturalcontentsubject,suchas
FRSL216DécouvronsMontréalenfrançaisorFRSL326DécouvronsleQuébecen
français.Apartfromsubjectsinthesedepartments,McGillUniversityteaches
principallyinEnglish.
LavalUniversity,inQuebecCityinCanada,isaFrancophoneuniversityandwiththe

B.RecommendedcombinationofFrenchsubjects
Theeasiestwaytogoaboutdecidingontherangeofsubjectsyouwillstudyistochoose
twodisciplines.Thisisbecausetheremaybenocorrespondencebetweenhowmany
pointsaMelbournesubjectisworthandhowmanycreditsaFrenchuniversitysubjectis
worth,andyoumaywellendupdoing5or6subjectsatyourFrenchuniversity.
Choosingtwodisciplinesmeansthatyoucanchoosearound15creditsworthofsubjects
inFrenchstudies(includingyourlanguagesubject),andaround15creditsworthin,say,
Politics.Melbournecanthentranslatethesecreditsverysimplybycreditingyouthe
equivalentoftwo12.5subjectsinFrenchandtwo12.5subjectsinPolitics.Itdoesn’t
matterifyouchoose13or14creditsinFrenchand16or17creditsinPolitics,orvice
versaaslongasthetotalnumberofcreditsaddsuptoatleast29credits,andpreferably
30.
C.Levelofsubjects
Werecommendthatstudentstakeaselectionof1st(‘semestre1’or‘semestre2’),2nd
(‘semestre3’or‘semestre4’)and3rd(‘semestre5’or‘semestre6’)yearsubjects.
