Information for the
GLENN A. BIXBY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Established 1998
The Glenn A. Bixby Memorial Scholarship is available through the University of Central
Missouri Foundation for a student pursuing a degree in the field of music education. This
scholarship is made possible by way of a gift from friends and colleagues of Glenn A. Bixby and
from Mrs. Bonnie L. Bixby, Warrensburg, Missouri, in memory of her husband, Glenn A. Bixby.
SCHOLARSHIP BACKGROUND:
Glenn A. Bixby was born on a farm August 2, 1923, in Holden, MO. In 1941, he graduated from
Holden High School where he excelled in music. He received many awards in music contests
and loved to relate stories about traveling to compete.
Mr. Bixby attended Graceland College in Lamoni, IA. During his sophomore year he was called
to service in the Navy. While in the Navy he took courses through the University of Iowa and
Cornell College. He received an Associate of Arts degree from Graceland. After World War II
ended he married Bonnie Stuck. They had five children all of whom attended Central Missouri
State University. Four are graduates of CMSU and one graduated from Kansas University.
After military service, Glenn returned to Lamoni where he worked as a meat cutter. He soon
realized he wanted to teach and work with young people so he and his family moved to
Warrensburg where he entered CMSU. In 1953, he received his BSE degree in music. He
taught in Lamoni, IA for twelve years. During the summers he attended Drake University where
he received a master's degree in music performance.
In 1965, he joined the faculty of CMSU to teach at the Lab School and in the Department of
Music. Mr. Bixby continued his education at Central and earned the education specialist degree.
He was honored as Central's Outstanding Music Alumnus in 1970 and also received the
Distinguished Service Award from Lamoni community schools.
He retired from CMSU in 1988, but continued sininging at church, weddings and other events.
At church he was always encouraging young people with their music. His retirement brought the
time to delve into his second love, history.
Paraphrasing a 1979 newspaper article, "If there is a thin line between a good teacher and an
exeptional teacher, Glenn Bixby took a giant leap across that line. Bixby, with seeming ease,
established a special communication with his students at CMSU. Perhaps it was his gentle
manner, his ready smile, or his quiet voice that created the special feeling his students had for
him. As large part of his success stemmed from the fact he treated his students with respect - for
their creativity, humanity and intelligence - he instilled in them a happy willingness to learn."
Many of these traits of an Outstanding Music Educator serve as a role model for the recipient(s)
of this scholarship.
