First UMC Rockwall Lenten Devotions Day 26 1 John 2:7-10 Common English Bible (CEB) Dear friends, I’m not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the message you heard. 8 On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light already shines. 9 The one who claims to be in the light while hating a brother or sister is in the darkness even now. 10 The person loving a brother and sister stays in the light, and there is nothing in the light that causes a person to stumble. 7 To us, this passage speaks as a reminder that the love of others brings us closer to Christ and more—this love of others is the same love that is at the very core of our relationship with God. This is not a new revelation and the light is already with us. This love for others provides us with strength and often brings us out of darkness. Knowing this, we can be more mindful and aware as we go about our daily lives to remember that not only do we have that love to show our brothers and sisters, but that the light of Christ is a shared experience, and that the strength it provides is a shared strength. Once we start a mindful practice of loving all others, we find that it does not run out, but rather compounds and grows. The more we give, the more we have... and the more we love. The more we are in God's light. Prayer: God, we thank you for your grace and light and ask that you help us in sharing that light with others in our lives. In your name we pray. Amen.
