Kicking off the year!
Welcome to the first edition of the sixth grade’s Connections! This is a monthly
newsletter written by students in the Lausanne Class of 2021.
Each month, students volunteer to write for the newsletter. They decide what
topics they wish to cover, ranging from art to classes to sports and beyond.
We hope you enjoy the first issue of Connections!

Did you know…?
Do you know what a microarchaegynophobiac is? In Greek, “micro” means small,
“archae” means ancient, “gyno” means woman, and “-phobiac” means one who
has a fear of. Some may say this is a person who is afraid of little old ladies!

Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy
By Jordan Timmons
One of my favorite movies I have ever seen was Guardians of the Galaxy.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a family, comedy and action movie. In the movie Star
Lord was caught for stealing many times, but never was caught. Star Lord is
really a human and he was abducted by aliens. He was raised by them and he
turned against them. Groot a living tree and Rocket a raccoon wanted that
money. The last relic that he stole was an important orb and Gamora a worrier
wanted it as well. They were caught fighting and then they were sent to jail.
There they met Drax because he wanted revenge on one of Gamora’s bosses.
They escape jail and go out to set things write from Gamora’s bosses and he
adopted father. You will have to see the movie that happens next.

Sports Updates
This Year’s Volleyball Team
By Madison Skaggs
Volleyball season has started! The games start is September. Mrs. Hammons is coaching the team this year. I decided to ask three
volleyball players that play for Lausanne Collegiate School what they think is the hardest thing about volleyball. Tia said that
communication was the hardest thing about volleyball. Natara said that setting was the hardest thing about volleyball. Isabel said
that overhand serving was the hardest thing about volleyball. I learned in PE that volleyball can be hard so make sure to cheer on
the volleyball players this year. I wish the sixth grade players good luck. I am so excited about this year’s volleyball team and I hope
they win some games!
Volleyball
By Tia Rizvi
I am talking about volleyball 7-8 grade we have won 1 game and lost 3. Isabella Bodini, Tia Rizvi Alana Chensasky, Rylee hovelWilkins, Lindsey Baker, Sophia Zuckerman, Sophie jones, Sophie faughnan , Christiana Gonzalez, Fierra brown, Zoe Hamblen, Abby
walker, Kayla pointer, and Hagan carter. In my opinion I think that communicating with our team mates is harder than more thing to
do in volleyball. You can go to the Lausanne page and see when we have games talk to you later.
The Florida Gators
By Cailin Brown
To me gymnastics is not just a sport. It’s my favorite thing to do to reduce stress. Every time I go there I forget all the problems I
have. I just focus on having a good time. The team I choose to blog about is the Florida Gators. The Gators have won the National
Championships back-to-back. They really have what it takes to win it three times in a row. The Gators have also just received a
facility makeover. Even after two championships, the Gators can’t spend all of their time celebrating. They need to get back in the
gym and start focusing on winning next year. Some of them are seniors, this would be their last opportunity for a National
Championship. I think it would be quite a challenge to be in college and go into the gym every day of the week. This is why I think
the Florida Gators Gymnastics Team is special to be making this big of a sacrifice to do the sport they love!
The 2014 FIFA World Cup
By Frankie Correa
The 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil was epic! With multiple games involving all of the 32 national teams. The last game was played in
The Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Germany vs. Argentina, ’52 almost going to penalty kicks, and GOALLLLLLL Germany wins
by a fabulous goal from Mario Gotze. The World Cup is incredible because every 4 years 32 teams play to win the title of world
champions. The next time those 32 teams play will be in the 2018 Fifa World Cup Russia.

Student Interests
Twin Deer
By Elizabeth Surbrook
In my neighborhood we have two
twin deer. They are very small and
cute. The way you tell fawns from
adult deer is by their size and spots.
Fawns have tiny white spots on
them. The spots act like camouflage.
Once the deer are older their spots
start to fade. When they are young it
is very hard to tell what gender they
are. Male deer get horns and then
later they shed them. The babies are
bigger than small dogs.
They eat flowers that are in our
neighborhood. Our neighbors are
usually not very happy with them.
We also have blueberries and we
tend to lose them very quickly even if
we don’t touch them (the deer eat
them). We also used to have a plum
tree and the deer also ate the plums
that had fallen and the ones that
were low to the ground. Even though
they eat our plants we enjoy seeing
them grow.
At My House
By Anne Rack
At my house I have one brother, two
parents, two cats, one dog, two
hermit crabs, two birds, and me.
That’s a total of eleven living
creatures!
My brother is a 14 year old 8th grader
who does competitive swimming. He
is three years older than me and
about a head taller. His hobby is
collecting neon athletic socks and
shirts. My mom and dad are both
doctors. My mom is a psychiatrist for
veterans and my dad is a sleep
disorders doctor. I am an eleven year
old in the 6th grade. I like playing
soccer, singing, and reading.
My cats are crazy. My biggest cat
Wallie (like the robot) is a tabby cat
(he has an interesting black and grey
design on his back and forehead). My
smallest cat Poe (like the panda) is a
tortoise shell (she has black and
brown splotches on her back and
face). My birds are very noisy. They
are very pretty with lots of yellow,
red, orange, green, and blue on
them. They love eating and making a
big mess! My hermit crabs are very
boring. They only move at night, but
are still fun to look at. Junebug my
dog is a terrier, she is very fun to play
with!
That is who/what lives in my house.
Basketball
By Dylan Woods
I love Basketball. It is my favorite
sport because it is cool and fun. I’m
the center on my team. My position
is to get rebounds, steal the ball, and
make shots. I would say, my team is
the best because we work out and
play hard together. The name of our
team is The Heat just like Dwayne
Wade and LeBron James when he
played there. I would say basketball
is a good sport!
Ballet Memphis
By Sarah Fisher
On September 21 I am going to go to
an audition for the Nutcracker Ballet.
I am so excited. I hope that I will
make it. I am auditioning for the the
Soldiers and Lambs. I hope I get in.
Play Production at Lausanne
By Carlin Sutter
There are many fun things to do afterschool at Lausanne. You can play soccer, go to gymnastics, cheerlead, play chess, and go to
after care and many more fun things. One thing that I do afterschool is the play production that Mrs. Bugg is directing. The people
that are in the play are from grades fifth through eighth. The play production is a Halloween play that we put on during Halloween
for the lower school. Luckily we put the play on in the morning, not during Halloween night. The play is an adaptation from the book
Liza Lou and the Yeller Belly Swamp. It is set in Louisiana near the bayous. Liza Lou is the main character who is a brave little girl who
defeats all of the monsters in the swamp. It is a very entertaining story and I think that it will be a lot of fun to put on. The costumes
and set will be so fun to design. I encourage everyone to be in the play next year. That is one of the many things that you can do
after school at Lausanne.
