These courses are designed for the amateur to the serious artist. Each may be taken for general
interest or for credit towards the Langara @ VSB Jewellery Making certificate.
Certificate Requirements (successful completion of six core courses and one elective):

CORE COURSES
VJWL 1001 - Jewellery: Beginners Level 1 (@VSB)
Learn to design and make jewellery from copper and Sterling silver. A variety of basic techniques will be taught from sawing, filing, soldering, texturing and
polishing while creating jewellery pieces of your own design. This is a great introduction to tools, materials and techniques for anyone new to making
jewellery or for those looking to expand their current knowledge. The projects will consist of rings, pierced pendants and/or earrings, as well as links for a
chain or bracelet. Copper will be supplied. Special instructions: Sterling silver will be available from the instructor at an additional cost (approx. $50 to $75
depending on the design). Limited enrolment.
VJWL 1002 - Jewellery: Beginners Level 2 (@VSB)
This beginner jewellery course expands upon the skills learned in Beginners Level 1. Students will continue to develop their skills using a wide range of
jewellery techniques. Strengthen your soldering, sawing riveting, finishing and stone setting skills. Students will leave with several pieces of finished
jewellery that employ these techniques. Projects could include pendants, earrings, bracelets or rings. Metals like copper and brass are included in course
fee. Precious metals and gems have to be purchased separately; a list of suppliers will be given during first class. Prerequisites: Jewellery: Beginners Level 1.
Limited enrolment.
VJWL 1003 - Jewellery: Intermediate Level 1 (@VSB)
Jewellery: Intermediate Level 1 - A Sample of Jewellery Techniques - In this class the student will be exposed to a broad variety of jewellery practices at an
introductory level. They will include the topics of wax carving and centrifugal casting and also through torch firing; wet packing and sifting enamels will be
taught. Etching of non-ferrous metals and an introduction to repousee' are the other topics taught in the duration of the course. Silver costs are extra,
plus the student may be required to purchase a chasing hammer and a repousee' bowl. Prerequisite: Jewellery: Beginners Level 2, or experience with
sawing, filing, soldering and polishing. Limited enrolment.
VJWL 1004 - Jewellery: Adv. Techniques Level 1 (@VSB)
Jewellery: Advanced Techniques 1(Hydrolic Die) - Use your basic knowledge to continue building your skills. Gain more knowledge for your portfolio while
continuing in the jewellery medium. More specific techniques will be covered such basics of anticlastic forming, roller-printing, creative bezels
/intermediate level, hydraulic die forming. Transfer your designs into special projects by using intermediate and advanced techniques. Precious metals and
gems are not included in the course fee and have to be purchased separately; a list of where to purchase these will be provided at the first class. Metals
like copper and brass included in course fee. Prerequisites: Jewellery Intermediate Level 1 or equivalent (good basic soldering skills). Limited enrolment.
VJWL 1007 - Jewellery: Adv. Techniques Level 2 (@VSB)
Build your jewellery making skills to expand your portfolio with specific techniques such as roller-printing, marriage of metals. Learn the skills necessary to
transfer your designs into special projects by using intermediate and advanced techniques. Second half of the course Lost Wax Carving will be covered and
students will be able to recycle their silver scraps as one project per student will be set off for casting. Copper and brass, saw blades and solder included.
Note: Precious metals and gems are to be purchased separately. A list of suppliers will be given on the first day of class. Prerequisite: Jewellery: Advanced
Techniques Level 1 (or equivalent). Limited enrolment. Note: This course will participate in the Lacy West Student Design Award 2015. The winner will be
announced by the end of this course and will receive a Lacy West Gift Certificate.

VJWL 1005 - Jewellery: Professional Studio Techniques (@VSB)
This advanced jewellery making level covers everything from bench tricks, troubleshooting, refinement of soldering techniques, advanced bezels like prong
settings and creative bezels, jewellery as a sculpture, and more. Students will be guided through their personal projects, receive hands-on advice, and will
build confidence in their level of expertise. Students will have access to machinery like rolling mill, hydraulic press, anticlastic shaping tools and more. If
the students wish to work with silver and precious gemstones, a list of suppliers will be given out during the first session. Prerequisite: Jewellery
Techniques 2 or equivalent (intermediate soldering skills). Limited enrolment.
ELECTIVES (chose one)
VJWL 1006 - Jewellery: Intro to Kiln Enamelling (@VSB)
Expand your sense of aesthetic in the arts in this introductory Enamelling course. A variety of glass enamelling techniques are taught including: dry
application, wet charging, painting, and champlevé - using the two forms of enamel opaque and transparent. In the champlevé portion of the course, the
etching techniques of Intaglio, PNP, and sugar lift are covered. The decorative applications of foils, glass rods, and millefiori are shown so they can be
incorporated into your artwork. Prerequisite: It is helpful to have some previous jewellery making experience, but not necessary. Additional fee for
materials may apply. Limited enrolment.
VJWL 1008 - Jewellery: Beads & Wireworks Level 1 (@VSB)
Jewellery: Beads, Wirework and Links Level 1 - A beginners beading class, covering all the basics of jewellery beading as well as wire working techniques,
cold connection of metals and materials, identification of findings and tools. You will create a simple pair of drop earrings and a bracelet, as well as the
skills to design your own pieces. Materials to be supplied will include copper, brass and steel wire (Sterling silver wire can be purchased at an additional
cost from instructor). Hand tools and some beads will be available. You are encouraged to bring your own if you have them. Limited enrolment.
