HOLIDAY ASSIGNMENT 2014-2015 CLASS V ‘Lazy hazy summer days, Unwind slowly, sun ablaze Sweetly scented air abounds, Let’s have some fun and jump around!’ A holiday is supposed to be a break from studies, explanations and completing tasks. But are holidays supposed to make us irresponsible kids? NO. So, we’re going to take up certain responsibilities and also enjoy our holidays with our Families. The following assignments would be graded for FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT 1. Guidelines for Holiday Homework Revise the content covered in the moth of April and May. Do your holiday homework neatly and in an organised manner. English INSTRUCTIONS: Holiday homework shall be done on an A4 size spiraled booklet. Homework should be neatly and nicely presented. I. Read the following book and complete the questions that follow:Collins Bright Readers: Monster in the Mirror and other stories 1. Read the story ‘Flash Harriet and the Loch Ness Monster’. Do the activities given therewith. Write a short summary of the story (75 words) and name the main characters. Choose 10 interesting adjectives from the story and find their dictionary meanings. Find one synonym and one antonym for all the 10 words. Make interesting sentences using the 10 words. Present your work creatively. 2. Make a book cover for the above book. Remember, a book cover has the name of the book, author, illustrator and an illustration. Use a thick A4 size sheet and be as creative as you can. 3. Make a bookmark. Decorate it and write an inspirational quotation by a well known poet or author. Laminate and present it beautifully. 4. Make a story board. Storyboards Storyboards are used in the making of films and television programmes. They're drawn up before the film or programme is shot and they show how the action should end up looking on screen. You're going to make a storyboard of your own for your homework. Imagine that you're a director and that you're going to turn a storybook into a film. Choose a section of your book and draw up a storyboard for it. You need to draw pictures of the main events that happen in the part of the book you've chosen and add captions underneath each picture to describe what is happening. II. Compare Books to Film: Read a book and then check out the video version of the book. Talk about the similarities and differences in the two mediums. What did you like about each form? What you didn't like? Did you prefer the book or the movie, and why? Find out information on any 2 latest storage devices and type about it in MS Word according to the specifications given below and take a printout of the same. OR 2. Scientists are trying to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) in computers. Search information about it and type an article on “Computers with Artificial Intelligence” in MS Word according to the given specifications. Also take a printout of the same. Choose the articles related to Social science and prepare a collage by pasting them on A3 size sheet. Select any one interesting article from the collage and do any one of the following on A3 sheet: i. Make a crossword of the new /interesting terms found in the article. ii. Treat the article as a reading comprehension passage and prepare 5 question-answers on it. iii. Prepare a fact sheet with more amazing facts or information related to the article. iv. Write a short summary of the article in your own words. Also include your own opinion on the article. 2. Atlas Activity: Refer to the Atlas and do any one of the followingi. A to Z of countries: Write names of 2 countries starting with each alphabet on A3 sheets. Eg- A- Argentina, Alaska…..B- Brazil, Bangladesh….Z- Zambia, Zaire etc. Also write an interesting fact about each country and paste the flag of the country. ii. Crossword Mania: Observe the physical map of any continent. Study the important landforms (mountains, rivers, deserts, plateau, plains, gulf, bay, strait, isthmus etc.) of that continent and prepare a crossword on it (on colored A3 sheet). Use facts about the landforms found in the continents to prepare the crossword. Also include pictures. Eg- Continent chosen : AFRICA Crossword clues: Across-i. The largest desert (Answer- Sahara desert) Science: “Science is magical, yet has reasons ” 1. What happened when the turmeric met the soap? Observe yourself. Make a turmeric paper by spreading turmeric paste on a A4 size handmade sheet (white). After the sheet dries, write your name on it using a soap solution.(compulsory for all) 2. FUN WITH COLOURS: immerse the petals of China rose in slightly hot water. Wait for some time. Then filter out the petals from the solution. Add this solution to different samples of lemon juice, soap solution, vinegar, garden soil, milk and observe. Make a note of this experiment in a scrap file. (Roll no.1-10) 3. Make a compost bin yourself. Use a wide mouthed jar. Place vegetable peels and left over cooked rice between the layers of soil. Sprinkle some water over the top layer of soil. Keep the jar outside in your garden and observe it every day. Write your observations in a file. (Roll no.11-20) 4. Make a weighing balance. Use identical jar caps as pans. Tape paper loops to the plastic pans and hang them from the ends of a straw. Push a pin through the centre of the straw and then through an eraser. Make sure that the straw moves freely about the pin (fulcrum). Then fix the loops to the straw and place the eraser on the box of the jar.
