FROM THE ARCHBISHOP
Dear Friend:
Almost 100 years after
Archbishop Henry Moeller
established the Bureau
of Catholic Charities,
today’s Catholic Charities
Southwestern Ohio continues to carry out
exemplary charitable work to the benefit of all who
live in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
In Deus Caritas Est, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
wrote that:
“The Church’s deepest nature is expressed in her
three-fold responsibility: of proclaiming the word of
God (kerygma-martyria), celebrating the sacraments
(leitourgia), and exercising the ministry of charity
(diakonia). These duties presuppose each other and
are inseparable. For the Church, charity is not a kind
of welfare activity which could equally well be left
to others, but is a part of her nature, an indispensable
expression of her very being.”
As I travel the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, I am
continually heartened by the many ways in which
the Church lives up to the responsibility of charity.
I especially think of Catholic Charities’ invaluable
service in the areas of mental health counseling, refugee
resettlement, food assistance, immigrant services, and
family and senior services. In serving the poor, the
vulnerable, and the stranger in southwestern Ohio,
Catholic Charities makes manifest God’s love to all and
shows that charity is indeed part of the local Church’s
nature, “an indispensable expression of her very being.”
I am grateful for the work of Catholic Charities
throughout the past year.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Dennis M. Schnurr
Archbishop of Cincinnati

BOARD AND CEO LETTER
Dear Friend of Catholic Charities,
We are blessed to report that in 2012, through your
support, 41,300 individuals were served by programs
of Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio. Of equal
importance, 822 volunteers provided 184,941 hours of
service. These results were made possible by the excellent
work of the Board and 71 members of the CCSWO
staff.
We completed a strategic planning process and redrafted
our mission statement that is:
ENLIGHTEN the community to see God’s love for the
poor.
SERVE the community to in turn serve the vulnerable.
EMPOWER the community so all God’s Children rise
from spiritual and material poverty.
Catholic Charities is not limited to a paid staff
performing human services. Our larger purpose is to
provide opportunities for the faithful of the Archdiocese
and the community to serve the poor. We serve and we
invite the community to serve the poor, just as Jesus
invited us to serve as He washed the feet of the apostles
(John 13). We serve with the goal of enabling those
afflicted with material poverty to find ways to become
self-sustaining. We also empower the affluent to rise
from the possibility of a spiritual poverty of materiality
through an opportunity to serve others.
The need for our services is growing. In all of our
programs, we see more and more people who are
vulnerable and on the edge. Families, children, seniors,
caregivers, immigrants, the working poor, disaster
victims, those without sufficient food or adequate
shelter, and those suffering from mental anguish such as
depression or anxiety, benefit from our capacity to serve.
We were effective stewards in 2012 and delivered 92% of
each dollar received as direct service to clients. We were
blessed to receive $14.7 million in financial revenue and
generated a small surplus of $47,323. The revenue was
a mix of donations, United Way, foundations, fees for
service, and government programs. Financial details are
provided in the financial section of this report.
Our board and management, drafted a 2013-15 strategic
plan that strives to expand and more effectively deliver
our mission. This forward-thinking and realistic plan
includes collaborative services with parishes, increasing
volunteer opportunities, and extending high quality
service to the vulnerable. One example is Mental Health
Services, that are now provides counseling services on
location at parishes and at other human service providers
to reach more people. We are also acquiring technology
to more effectively provide case management services
and volunteer management to expand positive service
outcomes. We expect to report higher service levels and
results in 2013.
In the words of Pope Francis, “The proclamation of the
Gospel is destined primarily to the poor, to those who
often lack the essentials for a decent life. The good news
is first announced to them, that God loves them before
all others and comes to visit them through the acts
of charity that the Disciples of Christ carry out in his
name.”
Thank you all for making this possible through our work
in Jesus’ name.

SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK
The Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) served 142,759 individuals through food
distribution to 90 member agencies, including pantries, soup kitchens, and other
agencies. SHFB served 29,810 people through two food pantries it operates and
through direct cash assistance.
The introduction of the Mobile Food Pantry for under-served areas of Clark,
Champaign and Logan counties provides food to the hungry. The truck is courtesy of
Kraft Foods and Feeding America and is an innovative approach to delivering much needed food.
In 2013, the SHFB team will expand capacity to serve more families in need.

SU CASA HISPANIC CENTER
Su Casa Hispanic Center is the primary provider of social, educational, language,
employment and health care referral services to the Hispanic/Latino community in
Greater Cincinnati. The mission of Su Casa is to promote self-sufficiency for the
Hispanic/Latino immigrant community that comes to the U.S. looking for a better
way of life for their families.
In 2012, Su Casa served 2,818 immigrants through education, skills training, ESOL
(English for Speakers of Other Languages), health promotion, legal services and emergency assistance. Immigrants
accessing Su Casa’s services are all looking to form better lives and be productive in the community. Acculturation
into Greater Cincinnati is a key goal at Su Casa.
Su Casa was recognized at the national, state and local levels. Su Casa received the Brillante Award for Community
Service Excellence by the National Society of Hispanic MBAs and the LULAC Cincinnati Hispanic Service
Institution Award. Giovanna Alvarez, Director of Su Casa, was recognized as a Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan by
the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs.
In 2013, Su Casa is planning to expand service in Carthage, Price Hill, Hamilton, New Carlisle and communities
with Hispanic immigrant populations.
SENIOR SERVICES
Value
the
Aged
10,000 Baby Boomers retire each day and look to meaningfully contribute. Many care
for parents or spouses. Others need the care themselves.
CCSWO provides opportunities for meaning and value for these seniors.
In 2012, seniors were served through five key programs.
• Caregiver Assistance Network – 933 caregivers were served through support groups and 504 people took one of
the 36 workshops presented by the Speakers Bureau.
• Foster Grandparent Program – 842 children were served by 80 seniors in 37 schools and daycare centers.
• Northern Brown Senior Center – 1,512 seniors were served through transportation and socialization services.
• Senior Companion Program – 357 seniors were served through 67 senior volunteers.
• Retired Senior Volunteer Program – 160 senior volunteers gave 8,502 hours of service to 13 community
organizations.
In 2013, the Senior Services will build on exemplary opportunities to serve.
FAMILY SERVICES
Strengthen
the
Family
Family Services (FS) finds ways to heal broken families and hurting children. It’s a
service that significantly changes outcomes.
In 2012, the FS team served:
• 954 children through the Incredible Years program
• 119 parents through 17 Parenting Education Classes
• 755 people searching for answers in our Parenting & Life Issues Workshops
• 133 child-care and pre-school providers in our Early Childhood Mental Health
Consultations
• 50 families with short-term financial needs for a temporary life challenge
• More than 2,000 families and youth through the Adoption, Pregnancy Services, and
Postponing Sexual Involvement programs
The work of the FS team leads to better parents, healthier children and other individuals better able to handle the
issues in their lives.
In 2013 the FS team is expanding services to reach more parents and children. Families are more vulnerable and
sometimes require guidance to succeed.

REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT SERVICES
Imagine spending years or decades in a UN operated refugee
camp with substandard and overcrowded living conditions. Yet, this is the way of life
for those fleeing violence, war and persecution. Most refugees stay in the camps or
return home to uncertainty and fear.
In 2012, the Refugee Resettlement Services program (RRS) resettled 211 refugees in
Greater Cincinnati. Most came from Bhutan in Central Asia or countries in Central
Africa to find safety and opportunity. The RRS program has resettled more than
10,000 refugees in its 25 years of services.
For the RRS team, the initial resettlement process is just the beginning. The goal
for client is self-sustainability through housing, employment and language skills. In 2012, the RRS team located
housing for 201 clients and directed 44 to find jobs. The RRS team provided English as a Second Language courses
to 200 refugees.
In 2013, the RRS team continues to welcome the stranger as directed in scripture.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
Addictions, grief, low self-esteem, stress, relationship problems, - mental health issues
affect all segments of our community. At any given time, about 25% of our community exhibits symptoms that could require mental health counseling. If left untreated,
these conditions often result in job loss, divorce, failing grades, family conflict, relationship issues, substance abuse and other major life consequences.
In 2012, CCSWO Mental Health Counselors served 1,863 clients through individuals,
family and groups counseling. These clients came from all walks of life and income
levels. Those who could pay do so through insurance or out-of-pocket. Those who were income eligible received a
sliding scale cost of service with the difference made up by the United Way and other sources. Regardless of income,
everyone who expressed a need received counseling. 76% received lower fees or some form of subsidy.
The Mental Health Services team expanded services provided by partnering with these organizations.
• CityLink – the MHS team provides mental health services through CityLink, a one-stop social service facility in
the West End that specializes in unemployment for the long-term unemployed.
• Project Rachel – The MHS team provides counseling for women suffering from post-abortion trauma.
• Gate of Heaven Cemetery – The MHS team provides grief counseling for individuals and groups of those who
have recently lost a loved one.
• St. Susanna – The MHS team provides counseling and support groups on-site at the parish.
The MHS team continues to look for new venues to deliver mental health services. A 2013 priority is expanding
on-site at parishes to offer services directly to parishioners.
