Autumn Term 1 2016
Emerald Class Curriculum
Year 1/2
Topic: London’s Burning!
The Great Fire of London
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to term one of the school year! This year the adults working in Emerald Class are: Miss Mountain, Miss Smith
(mornings), Mrs Clarke (afternoons) and Mrs Chappell (Friday afternoons). Here is some information about what we will be
learning in Emerald Class this term.
English
Maths
The children will have a daily ‘Read, Write
Inc.’ session which includes phonics, group
reading and writing. They will also have a
daily English session when they will learn
about different types of text.
This term the class will learn about and
write: labels, lists, signs and posters; songs and repetitive
poems; and stories in familiar settings.
When learning about labels, lists, signs and posters the
children will think about their favourite item of clothing
and write captions describing this. They will write lists for
shopping, study and design labels for clothes. They will
explore the use of posters, design their own and record
feelings in writing signs.
During our poetry sessions the children will read, then
memorise a variety of short repetitive funny poems and
also write their own verses.
We will also read three popular books to capture the
children's imagination and get them story writing: The
Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr, Whatever Next!
by Jill Murphy and Dogger by
Shirley Hughes. The children
will make up their own stories
about all sorts of strange and
wonderful things.
In our daily maths sessions this term the Year
One children will learn to:

Count to ten, forwards and backwards,
beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given
number.

Count in multiples of twos.

Count, read and write numbers to 10 in numerals and words.

Identify one more or one less than a given number.

Represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts
(within 10)

Add and subtract one digit numbers (to 10), including zero.

Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving
addition (+), subtraction (-) and equals (=) signs.

Solve one step problems that involve addition and subtraction,
using objects and pictures and missing number problems.
In our daily maths sessions this term the Year Two children will learn to:

Count in steps of 2, 3 and 5 from 0 and in tens from any
number, forward and backward.

Read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and words.

Recognise the place value of each digit in a two digit number
(tens, ones)

Identify, represent and estimate numbers to 100 using
different representations including the number line.

Compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and =
signs.

Recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently,
and derive and use related facts up to 100.

Solve problems with addition and subtraction: using objects and
pictures, including those involving numbers, quantities and
measures.

Show that the addition of two numbers can be done in any
order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from
another cannot.

Recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition
and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve
missing number problems.
Topic Work
History The class will learn about the Great Fire of London of 1666. We will answer the following questions through our
lessons: Where is London?; How do we know about the GFoL?; What happened in the GFoL?; Who was Samuel Pepys?; How are
houses different now to those built in 1666?; How was London rebuilt?; What did London look like du ring the fire?
Science: Everyday Materials The class will learn to use their knowledge and understanding of the properties of materials, to
distinguish objects from materials, identify and group everyday materials, and compare their suitability for different uses. We
will look at the materials used to construct buildings in 1666 and how this contributed to the spread of the fire.
Computing Emerald Class will be learning about how to stay safe online.
D&T We will build our own model Pudding Lane using recycled materials and wood to construct the buildings.
Art The children will learn to colour mix and create different shades to paint the London skyline during the fire. They will
create a silhouette of the buildings.
Music In our music topic ‘Our land’ the children will explore timbre and texture as they explore
descriptive sounds. They will listen to, and perform, music inspired by the myths.
RE Throughout this year the children will learn about Christianity and Hinduism with Mrs Chapell.
PSHE The children will thinking about the questions: ‘Are all changes bad?’ and ‘Why do we have
rules?’
PE
PE lessons will be on Wednesdays and Fridays and will involve games and gymnastics. Children must have correct
kit for PE kit in school every day. This is a t-shirt, a pair of shorts, jogging trousers, socks, warm sports
jumper, a pair of plimsolls and trainers. For safety reasons, long hair needs to be tied back and all jewellery,
including earrings, should be removed.
Reading
At Newton Primary School we aim to foster a love for reading and books and develop confident fluent
readers. Books and reading form a central part to the daily Read, Write, Inc. and English sessions and the
class will have regular story time. In school, the children will read daily with an adult in a group during
their Read, Write. Inc. session and we aim to read with your child every week on a one-to-one basis.
To help develop fluency and comprehension in reading we set the children the target of reading at least
three times a week at home with an adult. Every child in the class has been given a green reading diary. Please make a note in
this when you have read with them. Please pop-in and talk to a member of staff if you would like more ideas for making reading
at home fun.
Reading Rewards
When the children read three times in a week and bring their reading diary in on a Monday they will be able to collect a reading
bead and build-up a bracelet or keyring over time. A house point will be awarded for each additional read over a week.
Home Learning
In Emerald Class, all children are expected to:

Read with an adult at least three times per week;

Practise counting forwards and backwards and in steps of 2, 5 and 10;

Practise spelling words on their given list in preparation for the weekly spelling quiz every Friday;

Complete two out of the three Homework Missions in their homework book and return it to school every Wednesday;

Complete an optional topic project during the holidays.
Homework Rewards
House points will be plentiful for those who complete homework tasks and for ‘wow’ homework they may even get to have tea
with the head teacher!
All the staff in the Emerald Class Team will be happy to answer any questions or queries you may have about your child’s
learning in the class so please catch us on the playground at the end of the day. Alternatively, you can phone the school
office for a message to be passed-on or to arrange a meeting.
You are invited to join us for a ‘Getting to Know KS1’ workshop on Monday 19 th September from 6pm. A letter regarding
details of this will follow shortly.
If you are able to collect recycling materials, such as cereal boxes, for us to use when building Pudding Lane, they would be
gratefully received!
Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to a fabulous year working together to enable your child to be the
very best they can be!
Yours sincerely,
Miss Rosie Mountain
