Editorial
It’s great news that we have won the Village of the Year competition. Details of the
competition from Josephine are on page 5 and also on the website.
I’m afraid that this month I have drawn a blank on what to write about. There is so much
going on in the world that I have to restrain myself from commenting else I land myself in
trouble!! Instead I thought we could share some one liner jokes that might make you giggle
at least…get ready…
If you choke a Smurf, what colour does it turn?
If you take a Oriental person and spin him around several times, does he become disoriented?
Is it OK to use the AM radio after noon?
What do chickens think we taste like?
What do people in China call their good plates?
What hair colour do they put on the driver's license of a bald man?
When dog food is new and improved tasting, who tests it?
When they first invented the clock, how did they know what time it was to set it to?
Which is the other side of the street?
Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?
Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

Tattingstone Allotments
For the last few months the Tattingstone Allotments
have been under review by the Parish Council.
We hope that by the end of the year we will have an
agreement in place with the current allotment holders
and the parish council, this we hope will see stricter
management with official tenancy agreement in place,
more allotments plots available and a ban on
subletting.
If you wish to join the waiting list for an allotment plot,
please contact the parish clerk Janet Ward on 01473

Update on an Affordable Housing Scheme for Local People in Tattingstone
The Steering Group set up by the Parish Council and other stakeholders, continues to try and identify
and secure a site for a development of affordable housing for the village of Tattingstone. The Local
Housing Need Survey undertaken in September 2008 established there was a need from local
people for affordable housing in the village and that a scheme of 6-8 homes would be appropriate to
meet the current and medium term affordable housing needs of the local community.
The process of identifying a site has been ongoing since that time, but as yet has not been
successful in securing any land. We would therefore like to encourage any landowners in the village
to make contact with us if they have land which they believe may be suitable. We would be happy to
discuss the site with our Development Control Team to establish whether they would support the
development of the site for affordable housing.
As explained before once we have secured a site, draft plans will be drawn up for the proposed
scheme. This will involve the Housing Association’s Architect entering into pre-application
discussions with the Council’s Development Control Team. We will then arrange a Public
Information Day so that the site and the proposed scheme can be exhibited and discussed with the
local community.
A planning application would then be made and funding would need be secured. One advantage
that Tattingstone has, is that Babergh District Council has agreed to use the proceeds from the sale
of 30 and 31 Church Road to help to fund the provision of affordable housing in the village.
If anyone would like further information please contact me on the details below. We will ensure
that we keep people informed of further progress through the Parish Council, and through this
newsletter. Tracey Brinkley, Housing Enabling Officer, Babergh District Council

Brantham Garage Sale 2011
We would like to thank everyone for their help, support and contributions towards the Charity Garage
Sale held on Saturday 18 June 2011. Despite the gloomy weather hundreds flocked to the village
and many people gave their time and energy to make this event a great success.
The amount raised so far at this year 's sale is £3,600 which will be divided equally between St
Elizabeth Hospice (The Carla Dawson Tribute Fund) and CLICSargent Children's Cancer Charity
(www.clicksargent.org.uk).
Clearing up after the event was made easier by Roy Bennett who collected some of the remaining
items to give to ARC and the St Helena Hospice shop.
Cash4Schools (www.cash4schools.org.uk) collected 75 bags of leftover clothes, shoes, bedding,
curtains, boxes of DVDs, cd's and books and contributed £173.55 towards the fundraising total.
Many thanks for your help and kind regards

School News
It was St Valentine’s Day, 1929, all over again! Body profiles littering the playground. A gruesome
sight. Every single child in the school laid low, only to have to submit to the rigours of the dreaded
tape measure. What were they up to now?! They were supposed to be doing mathematics. It was
Maths Week at the school. What more innocent occupation could there be? Then a gang of them
desecrating the churchyard, staring at grave stones that hadn’t been stared at for centuries, while
others were in the church itself counting the flagstones. Were they planning to nick the lead from the
roof?
Why weren’t they doing their maths? Then another lot seem to be preparing to leap from a tree
with a parachute. What ever happened to health and safety? Suppose Ofsted happened by on one
of their surprise visits? Are other schools part of this? Had some strange virus leapt upon them? Or
had end-of-term-itis visited the school with a vengeance to clear their minds of all that they had
learned this year?
But then all was revealed. It was al fresco mathematics. Not sitting-on-the-floor maths, or elbowson-keyboard maths. It was a new kind of maths, cooked up by the school, while all the other schools
in the pyramid kept their heads down and stuck to boring old arithmetic. It was fun maths. It was
what mathematics ought to be. Out there, where the raw material of life was being generated.
Anybody can learn how to use a calculator, but what should we be calculating? The chalk silhouettes
were being measured, head to toe, and elbow to elbow. Out in the churchyard they were counting
the numbers of letters in the names of those residents who still had names. What was the modal
number of name letters? Six. That’s important; much more so than the fact that long forgotten Mr
Waller died during the plague. You can do something with a six; you can find out whether it divides
into 99. And inside the church there are dimensions in all directions, and shapes of all descriptions;
shapes that have no names. OK, let’s name them. Somebody found five shapes called George. But
back on the field they weren’t actually jumping out of trees. They were using the ’chute to play
number games.
The day before they had had mathematical sports; eleven teams and eleven colours. Big and
small, brothers and sisters together, with the big kids helping the small ones, accompanied by lots of
noise. Beanbags, Dice, Accumulated Long Jump, Sphere and Spoon race, Pythagoras’ Puzzle and
Crazy Capacity. With points for the teams in every event.
The day after was yum, yum time - mathematical cooking; shortbread, scones, fruit cocktail,
kebabs, rice crispy fridge cake, fruit smoothies and fruit jellies – all needing weighing and timing and
all at the right temperatures.
And on the last day the children took their weaponry to Southwold to give the crabs their annual
’ere we go again, chuck-’em-back bonanza. Crabs have four pairs of legs, so they counted them
and divided by eight. Sandcastles in the afternoon, all measured, followed by paddling and ice lollies.
Everything that could be was measured or counted. The whole enterprise was proclaimed a great
success, and somehow everyone made it back to school by going-home time. Norman Sanders

Babergh Village of the Year...
How wonderful! Tattingstone has been judged Babergh Village of the Year 2011!!!
This year the competition was open to villages with up to 500 local electors. The District
Council sent out entry forms to every eligible parish (this did not mean it had to be a
chocolate box image). The award is about the people who live, work and play together in
our communities, about those who are motivated to provide the best for all the residents.
Consideration for what social events and services are provided by our village groups and
the role our Parish Council take in all this. The overall appearance of the village was
considered as was caring for the national environment – how wildlife, flora and fauna are
protected for everyone to enjoy and how public areas are enhanced and managed.
Tattingstone has won £500 towards a community project, a brass plaque and a certificate.
We now go forward to the County round that will be judged on 28th July and if we win that,
on to the final on 3rd September.
Presentation of our win will take place in the Autumn.
Suggestions for a community project can be sent to Josephine Stanger at The Junipers,
The Heath or by email [email protected]. Please help our village stay the best!!

There are four bungalows in our cul-de-sac. They are made from these materials: straw, wood, brick
and glass.
Mrs Scott's bungalow is somewhere to the left of the wooden one and the third one along is brick.
Mrs Umbrella owns a straw bungalow and Mr Tinsley does not live at either end, but lives somewhere
to the right of the glass bungalow. Mr Wilshaw lives in the fourth bungalow, whilst the first bungalow
is not made from straw.
Who lives where, and what is their bungalow made from?

Parish Council News
The July meeting was attended by five members
of the public. PCSO Joanne Adams attended the
meeting in place of PC Gary Austin. She
reported on two thefts from motor vehicles in the
village during June. Problems have started again
with the youngsters diving off Lemons Hill bridge
into the reservoir. She urged people to ring the
police on Ipswich 613500 to report any incidents
of anti-social behaviour in that vicinity. Cllr.
Stanger said Tattingstone had won Babergh
District Council village of the year and would
receive £500.00 to be put to a community project.
The village now goes on to compete against three
other district council village winners.

Tattingstone Village Fete
Coming up to this year’s fete we thought we would give an update as to where the funds raised on
the day were distributed. Besides all the local groups that provided a stall or entertainment at the
fete, last year's Fete had a total income of just over £3000 of which £1900 was spent on providing
the entertainment, prizes, teas, marquees etc.
Of the balance, we donated £200 to the East Anglian Air Ambulance Appeal with the rest going into
the funds to provide extra equipment for the Children’s Area in the Playing Field which will also be
enclosed. A total of £4000 has been pledged for this stage of the development.
It is very pleasing to note that the winner of the balloon competition donated his £50 prize to the
Poppy Appeal, while Dave Clarke very generously donated his fee for singing to St Mary's Church
towards their redecoration funds. Albert Collins
APPLEAL...
This year we are hoping to make the raffle bigger and better. Any donations to the raffle are greatly
appreciated (especially lemon curd! He he). All donations to Albert. Also, if you can help out on the
day then please let us know as the more people we have to help out the better. Sesa will be
around again this year to gather the troops!!!

During August our services do not follow the usual pattern. As many clergy are away during this
time it is very difficult to cover all Eucharist services across the benefice so it has been agreed
there will be just one Communion service each week in the benefice starting with the Benefice
Communion in Tattingstone on 31st July. Unfortunately, it means St. Mary’s doesn’t have
another Communion service until 4th September however I’m sure you will welcome back Angela
Neale who is taking Morning Prayer on 7th August and Christine Ward, a Lay Reader from
Chelmondiston, who has been invited to take Evening Prayer on 21 st August.
‘Open Churches Week’ will be from 6th to 13th August and it is just that, a week where churches
that are normally locked open their doors to visitors. We are very lucky in Tattingstone that our
church is normally open during daylight hours and we sincerely thank Jim Pearce and Gill
Sargeant who faithfully open and close the church each day. We hope and trust that locals keep
a watchful eye over our beautiful church as they go about their business in the village as we wish
to be able to keep St. Mary’s open to those who want to visit at any time.
The 30th Suffolk Historic Churches Trust Sponsored Cycle Ride happens on 10 th September and
now is the time to obtain sponsor forms from either Linda Smalley or myself and to be planning
your route. The cycle ride is a major source of funding for SHCT and St. Mary’s benefited
greatly from a large donation from them towards the recently completed work. Cyclists visit as
many churches as they can and sponsor money is divided equally between your chosen church
(hopefully St. Mary’s) and the SHCT. You don’t have to cycle, you can walk and even people
sitting in church checking in cyclists can sign up their own sponsors. Whichever way you’d like
to do it just let us know!!
With all good wishes and blessings to those travelling on holiday, may you have a restful time
whilst recharging batteries and may the sun shine for you!

ON THE VEGGI PLOT FOR AUGUST...
Pot up strawberry runners by cutting from the parent plant. Lift remainder of onions to dry
and store. Prune harvested fruit bushes. Remove lower trusses from tomato plants. Place
support stakes next to Brussels sprouts. Take cuttings from herbs: bay, hyssop, rosemary and
sage. Sow outdoors cabbage (spring), carrot, Chinese leaf, kohirabi, lettuce, peas, turnip,
winter radish, winter spinach. Store picked broccoli in a jug of water in the fridge; it lasts
longer. Cauliflowers can store for longer if hung upside down on a short stem, in a cool place
and sprayed with a mist of water every few days. Chop spring onion stems and add to ice cube

th
softball game and some-day soon people will
figure out how to play it without Sesa yelling at
them!! (Those who were there will understand!!).
There were at least 40 softball players both
young and old throughout the day that swung
and hit with enthusiasm from the start. There
were 9 teams for the Quiz and the winners won a
bag of American food items. Yippee! Thanks
again to all those who came for all or part of the
day. We hope you enjoyed yourselves as much
as we did. See you again next year...
