A Message From Dr Robson
Dear Parents and Guardians
Holocaust Memorial Day 2017 was celebrated today. The theme this year was “How can life
go on?” Holocaust Memorial Day is a national commemoration day in the United Kingdom
dedicated to the remembrance of those who suffered in The Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution,
and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. We would like to thank
Mr. Power for the thought provoking and moving assemblies he has delivered to pupils. Two
Sixth Form pupils, Emma and Luke, shared their experience of their recent visit to Auschwitz as
part of the Holocaust Foundation Trust. It was very moving to hear their first hand experience.
It is great to see that so many of our pupils have made pledges which are on display in the
Library.
Thank you to parents and pupils for attending the second round of U5 interviews. I look
forward to meeting L6 pupils and their parents at the L6 interviews, which take place on
Wednesday 1 February. We will be hosting the Lower Sixth Higher Education Evening on
Monday 13 February and all Lower Sixth students and their parents are recommended to
attend this important and informative event regarding applications to Higher Education.
Tickets for Les Misérables tickets are now sold out! Thank you to all parents who have
purchased tickets for this exciting production. We look forward to welcoming you to the
forthcoming performances.
I wish you a pleasant and relaxing weekend.
Dr Richard Robson

Horsfall Launch - The Grand Tour
After her excellent work raising over £2000 for the charity 42nd Street, Mrs Alderson
and Mr Yates were invited to an illuminating, creative and life affirming evening to
launch the new Horsfall centre in Ancoats.
The representatives of Siena House were treated to an
excellent and informative tour of the new facility, which
provides much needed care, counselling and creative
outlets for the youth of Manchester.
Built on the site of the former Ancoats Museum, the
centre continues the ethos of its founder, Thomas C
Horsfall; championing the therapeutic power of art and
democratising beauty so that it is available for all.
The building was designed in conjunction with the young
people who utilise the services in the centre, and it certainly showed in its design, with
a myriad of innovative ideas which clearly displayed the originality and sensitivity of
both the 42nd Street team and those that use their vital services.
The heartfelt speeches of thanks showed the importance of the fundraising efforts of
our house system and they will ring in our ears to spur us on to greater endeavours.

Tomorrow’s World
This week our Upper Fourth students attended the Manchester
Museum of Science and Industry for a workshop. This was part of
their Computer Science GCSE to further their studies on Pioneers
in the Computing world. The workshop focused on a replica of the
‘Manchester Baby’ - the first computer in the world to be built. It was
amazing to learn how fast technology has advanced in such a relatively
short space of time and that the phone in your pocket is now more
powerful than the Manchester Baby that filled a room.
Grand Designs - The Year of the Rooster
Manchester will be celebrating Chinese New Year in style next week,
hosting a four day long extravaganza, in which 6,000 red lanterns will
line the shopping streets of the city centre and a Chinese Food Market
will take place in St. Ann’s Square.
St Bede’s students celebrated in Mandarin club this week, continuing
the tradition of creating red paper origami decorated with Chinese
characters. They also learnt some fascinating facts and phrases related
to the incoming Year of the Rooster.
All students are welcome at the club which runs every Tuesday in R15
from 1.10pm.

Assembly - Auschwitz Visit
In November Luke O’Hara and Emma Garrett took part in the Lessons from
Auschwitz Project. This involved attending a seminar where they had the
opportunity to meet a survivor of the Holocaust. They also visited Auschwitz
-Birkenau concentration camp.
This was an unforgettable emotional and educational experience. The Project aims
to increase knowledge and
understanding of the Holocaust
based on the premise that
‘hearing is not like seeing’ and
to signal what can happen if
prejudice and racism become
acceptable. Emma and Luke
delivered a superb and heartfelt
assembly to the Sixth Form
about their experience and
focussed on the Perpetrators of
the Holocaust.
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day this year is ‘How can life go on?’.
Holocaust - How Can Life Go On?
Sonia Weitz – Survivor of Auschwitz
We are gathered today to remember six million. Six million little boys and
girls, men and women, grandmothers and grandfathers who, by the whim
of tyrants, are no more.
To remember the blameless and the pure whose lives went up in smoke
in the chambers of fire, in the factories of death. We remember that in the
heart of civilised Europe, aided by the silent acquiescence of so many of the
nations and peoples of the world, six million Jewish men and women, one
million children among them were taken by other human beings to die in
gas and fire, their ashes to fall nameless and graveless over a continent that had itself become a graveyard.
We remember the millions of Poles, Gypsies, Russians and other Europeans caught in the midst of the Holocaust whose lives ended
as victims of Nazism’s diabolically efficient technology of death.
Internet Safety 6 February
Traffic - Road Safety Awareness
On Monday 6 February Charlotte Aynsley will be
visiting the College to talk to pupils and parents about
Internet Safety.
We respectfully ask all parents to be mindful of the yellow zig-zag road
markings at the rear College entrance on Alness Road, outside the Prep
School and on Wellington Road.
Charlotte is an expert in her field and has an excellent
reputation for awareness raising about the perils of
sexting and protecting their digital footprint.
These should be left clear at all times and not be parked upon. They
allow a safe area for our pupils to enter and exit the College safely.
The talk for parents is at 6.00pm - 7.00pm on 6
February in the Junior Refectory.

Ready, Steady, Cook...Sausages!
Preps 1 & 2 were visited by Stephan of Holroyd Howe and Jill from Birtwistles Butchers to learn all about the production of a
school favourite…the sausage. They discovered how a sausage was made from the initial stage of having raw minced meat to the
cooking, and of course, tasting of one of Britain’s favourite food at breakfast, lunch and dinner. We would like to thank everyone
from Holroyd Howe and Birtwistles for creating such a wonderfully tasty learning experience for our children. For more
information and images from this outstanding activity click here: www.sbcm.co.uk/prep-1-prep-2-sausage-demonstration/

Shadow Hunters
Lourdes Reflections
Prep 3’s spectacular Scientists undertook an
experiment on Light & Shadows. They investigated
colours that can be seen in the dark and splitting white
light into the colours of the spectrum using a prism.
They had a fantastic time.

Thank you to Olivia, Paul and Isabelle who came to talk to the
Prep children in Monday’s Assembly. They discussed their charity
work when
they travelled to
Lourdes last year.
The children were
enthralled to hear
about the fun they
had as well as the
rewarding feeling
they had when
they helped the
infirm and disabled
on their pilgrimage
to St Bernadette’s
Grotto. They
handed each child with a commemorative pin badge from Lourdes.
In a few years some of Prep children will also be undertaking this
pilgrimage.
