2001–2002 ANNUAL REPORT
OF CAROLINA AND McNAIR SCHOLARS
More than 150 years ago Ralph Waldo Emerson defined the
American scholar as “man thinking.” Today he would say “man and
woman thinking,” but his point would remain the same: that
the true scholar is more than merely intelligent, is more than a
straight-A student, is not, in short, a bookworm.

The Carolina and McNair Scholars programs at the University
of South Carolina were developed to attract the very people
Emerson described. The student scholars profiled in these pages
demonstrate strong and varied interests beyond the classroom that
parallel their unique, energetic personalities. As this annual report
chronicles in detail, our student scholars have significantly
enhanced the reputation of the University.

The University of South Carolina developed the Carolina
Scholars Program in 1969 to attract the very people Emerson
described. Through generous private support, we have expanded the program from nine students in its first year to more than
80 scholars on campus during fall 2001. Since its inception,
574 scholars have participated in the program, which has been
an integral factor in keeping many of the state’s most academically talented students in South Carolina.
Established in spring 1998 as part of the University’s
Bicentennial Campaign, the McNair Scholars Program is an
exciting scholarship fund for out-of-state students supported by
a generous gift of $20 million from USC alumnus Robert C.
McNair and his wife, Janice.
The McNair Scholars Program is the counterpart of USC’s
prestigious Carolina Scholars Program for gifted in-state students. The University welcomed the fourth class of McNair
Scholars this year. Fifteen first-year students joined 15 sophomore, 12 junior, and 10 senior peers in this prestigious program.
This year’s McNair Scholars represent 18 states and are among
the nation’s brightest students.
Distinguished by their extraordinary academic talent,
exemplary character, and outstanding leadership skills, the
Carolina and McNair Scholars are outstanding students whose
ideas and abilities will shape the world of tomorrow. These
young scholars personify not only the ideals Emerson spoke of
when he said, “Character is higher than intellect,” but also the
University’s own motto: “Learning humanizes character and
does not permit it to be cruel.” As this report chronicles, these
scholars have significantly enhanced the reputation of the
University.
A continuing goal of both programs is to create a community of scholars with a united and visible identity. First-year
scholars participate in a leadership retreat, creating bonds and
developing skills that will last a lifetime. Each fall and spring
semester, special formal events bring the scholars together. In
addition, through the First-Year Mentor Program, freshman
scholars meet regularly with a distinguished faculty member for
discussion and advice.
Through the generosity of the University’s donors, these
prestigious scholarship programs will continue to improve and
grow. This Carolina and McNair Scholars report is offered as a
testament to the successes of the programs that you have made
possible.
The Selection Process
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions coordinates the
selection process for Carolina and McNair Scholars. The
admissions staff reviews the academic records of all applicants
and selects the students to continue as semifinalists. Each
semifinalist is evaluated by two faculty members. The admissions staff also reviews other areas including academic preparation, leadership potential, outstanding talents and accomplishments, and recommendations.
Fifty Carolina Scholars Finalists and 40 McNair Scholars
Finalists are chosen for on-campus interviews held in February.
During the campus visit, candidates and their parents meet Dr.
John Palms, University president; Dr. Robin Morris, Scholars
Committee chair; Dr. Peter Sederberg, dean of the South
Carolina Honors College; current Carolina and McNair
Scholars; and other University administrators.
Faculty members and current scholars conduct the selection
interviews. In addition, the candidates take advantage of a variety
of educational experiences while on campus, including a conversation with the vice president for the Division of Student and
Alumni Affairs, Dr. Dennis Pruitt, and the opportunity to
attend South Carolina Honors College classes in session.
The Carolina Scholars and McNair Scholars Class of
2006, as well as all current scholars, not only exhibit extraordinary academic abilities, but also demonstrate the University’s
highest ideals. They are representatives of the best our nation
has to offer, and are an integral part of what makes the
University a “faithful index to the ambitions and fortunes of
the state.”
The Awards
The Carolina Scholar and McNair Scholar awards are the
most prestigious scholarships at the University of South
Carolina. Each Carolina and McNair Scholar award provides
an annual stipend, which covers costs such as tuition, fees,
books, and room and board. The stipend is renewable annually
to support the scholars through four years of undergraduate
study at the University.
In addition to the cash stipend, Carolina and McNair
Scholars participate in activities during the academic year that
complement the academic experience. First-year scholars participate in an outdoor leadership experience and are paired
with University faculty members who serve as their mentors
during the year.
Carolina Scholar Award Donors
Carolina Scholar Awards are made possible by the contributions of individuals, corporations, and foundations. The University
Development Office cultivates and maintains relationships with donors of Carolina Scholar Awards. Private support of this and other
programs enables the University of South Carolina to attract academically talented students and to provide the margin of excellence in
all academic programs.

Faculty Mentors
Acting on the suggestions of Dr. Don Greiner, associate provost
and dean of undergraduate affairs, and a Carolina Scholar alumnus, 40 seasoned faculty mentors recruited 40 new faculty mentors
for first-year Carolina and McNair scholars. Greiner, Carolina
Distinguished Professor in the Department of English, also serves
as a mentor each year.
This year, the freshman class of Carolina and McNair scholars participated in the First-Year Scholars Mentoring Program. During
the academic year, faculty mentors met with student protégés to
discuss university life, opportunities in their academic field, and
general issues of interest. Both mentors and scholars report that
the program is an exciting part of their Carolina experience.

valuable opportunities and endless encouragement as I pursued my
academic goals. He forced me to broaden my horizons.”
