2016 highlights
president & executive director message
The YWCA NorthEastern NY has been touching the lives of many throughout our
community for nearly 130 years with our mission-focused work. We strive to empower
women and are proud of our accomplishments which stimulate equal opportunities for
women and their families throughout our communities.
This past year was a monumental year for us personally as our Executive Director
of almost 25 years, Rowie Taylor, retired. Rowie was instrumental in overseeing the
growth and maturity of the YWCA during her tenure. Since 1993 Rowie has managed
the YW’s annual revenue from $1.6 million to just shy of $3 million dollars and increased
grant money from $210,000 to $1.2 million. Rowie’s mindful stewardship of programs
and finances has kept the YWCA in the forefront of grantors who knew that Rowie would
successfully execute the programs and services to help our communities’ neediest
populations. After a national search we are blessed to have Kim Siciliano take over as
our Executive Director. Kim has embraced her new responsibilities and proven to the
Board of Directors that she is a strong leader who will continue to grow the mission of
the YW!
The YW has continued to serve our community through programs such as the
Schenectady County Embraces Diversity (SCED) Study Circle Initiative, Unsung
Heroine/Black History Month Celebration, the Take Back the Night March, the Week
Without Violence, the Pink and Purple Ribbon Campaigns, the Festival of Trees, the
Early Learning Centers Spring Carnival and Fall Festival, a Zumbathon, Trivia Night,
and the Women of Achievement Celebration and Dinner were some of the events and
activities that were presented to our membership and the community. Throughout the
year, we challenged people to take a stand against violence and racism, appreciate
diversity and celebrate unity.
During 2016 we once again strengthened the inseparable relationship between
programs/services and funding. We thank our corporate sponsors, our many
contributors in the community and our membership. In particular, we thank the Carlilian
Foundation, the Wright Family Foundation, the William Gundry Broughton Foundation,
General Electric, MVP Health Care, Vincy’s Printing, Price Chopper Golub Foundation,
Sondra’s Fine Jewelry, Mazzone Hospitality, the Merriam Agency, The Daily Gazette,
Xerox Corporation, the United Way of the Greater Capital Region, the City of
Schenectady, the County of Schenectady, New York State, the Federal Government,
Rotary Club of Schenectady, the Kiwanis Club of Schenectady, the Soroptimist Club of
Schenectady, the ZONTA Club of Schenectady, the Junior League of Schenectady and
Saratoga Counties and various trusts and foundations for your tremendous support. We
especially thank our incredible volunteers for their commitment and dedication to the
mission and purpose of the YWCA.
The YWCA is a strong and vital organization founded on a legacy of caring, service
and leadership. All who are part of this organization (members, volunteers, staff and
collaborative partners) strive to fulfill our vision and mission: YWCA NorthEastern NY
is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice,
freedom and dignity for all. The strategic goals of the YW revolve around this mission
and the Board of Directors and staff of the YW work towards their fulfillment on a daily
basis. We ask you to please join us in trying to reach the incredible goal that our mission
presents us. Throughout this Annual Report, we are proud & pleased to share highlights
of 2016.

history
The YWCA of Schenectady, dba YWCA NorthEastern NY (NENY),
has a long and proud history. Since 1888, the YWCA NorthEastern
NY has been a constant innovator in providing programs and services
to meet the changing needs of women and their families in the
community. The Board of Directors understands and encourages
the YW’s role as a movement for change that quickly reviews
and responds to community situations as they arise. The YWCA
NorthEastern NY diligently strives to offer programs and services
that initiate action to bring about positive change.
The YWCA was established as a women’s membership association
and became one of the first nonprofit agencies to be incorporated
in New York State. The YWCA NENY is a Charter member of the
YWCA USA , which is the oldest and largest women’s membership
organization in the world). During 2016, the YWCA NENY, with its
headquarters in the Stockade section of Schenectady, NY, served
over 7,500 women, men and children through a variety of programs
and services - 78% of them are low-income.
The original incorporation papers stated that the functions of the
YWCA NorthEastern NY were: 1. housing; 2. education; and 3.
health promotion services. In 1979, the incorporation papers were
expanded to allow for a domestic violence shelter for women and
children. In 1985, they were again expanded to allow for early
childhood education (preschool/child care).
