Have the novels read and the essay ready to turn in on the first day
of school. You will be tested on both books. The following essay
assignment covers To Kill a Mockingbird.
Write a four-paragraph essay responding to the topic below.
Your essay should be typed, 12 pt font, and double-spaced. I am
looking for a well-constructed, insightful essay demonstrating
your understanding of the novel and the characters. You will
need to use quotes in your essay.
Essay Topic: The Necessity of Empathy
According to Atticus, “You never really understand a person until
you consider things from his point of view – until you climb into his
skin and walk around in it.” How is empathy toward others
demonstrated or learned by characters such as Atticus, Scout, Jem,
Dill, or Miss Maudie?
